@@user-pm2b47ar8d In some ways I see that also, but given the context of the situation in this scene, I feel like it's more plausible/fitting that Paul is implying that he will not be limited from the best of us (the ability to speak freely at the top) as the newly self-proclaimed leader. How dare Stilgar infer that I (Paul) be subject to the same limitations as everyone else because I am the Messiah. This was just my interpretation of it. I much prefer the idea that he was praising Stilgar, though. He's my favourite character. :)

Paul says the same about Stilgar in the books. In fact Paul hates how Stil went from being a mentor to a worshiper. He often compares it to losing a good friend. (Their bond in the books is more profound than what you can fit in two movies)

I know it's played for comic relief in some parts of the movie in a Monty Python kind of way, and yes, it is funny at times. But Javier Bardem's portrayal of Stilgar and his fanatical faith is so fantastic. I sometimes forgot I was watching a movie in some scenes with Stilgar, which is an insane thing that almost never happens to me anymore. And that look in the south when Paul gave his speech, the wonder in Stilgar's eyes, that was palpable. I could actually see it on Javier Bardem's face. I could have seen other actors in certain roles in both movies, but Javier Bardem was BORN to play Stilgar.
@Eastcyning

It stops being funny after a while, in a good way. The glazed-over look in his eyes when Paul rallies the war council is terrifying.
@felixhaggblom7562
@felixhaggblom7562 Ай бұрын
@@Eastcyning There is a quote from Phoebe Waller Bridge that really fits what they did with Stilgar in this film. "Disarm the audience with comedy, then punch them in the gut with drama when they least expect it." That's exactly what Stilgar's early moments do, they disarm us so that it truly hits us deep when the true face of fanaticism appears
@user-uv7eb1fi4b
@user-uv7eb1fi4b Ай бұрын
@@felixhaggblom7562 To add to that: Comedy is something that people will remember, which is perfect because Stilgar's character development echoes a main theme of the movie; the danger of religious/political fanaticism. Also, it very much parallels real life. Conspiracy theories and those who believe them are typically laughed out of the room. It's comedic up until it isn't (when it turns into real, violent action, which the final scene with Stilgar perfectly underscores).
@Kai-fb1ol

@@user-uv7eb1fi4b I like how as the movie enters its third act and Paul really starts to push the Lisan al-Gaib stuff, Stilgar's character deterioriates into a simple fanatic, whose dialogue is essentially just yelling Lisan al-Gaib and asking his messiah for orders. The thoughtful, amiable and wise Stilgar from earlier in the movie is subsumed. This is exactly what happens in the novel, and Paul hates it.

It's beautiful. His enthusiasm about his faith is inspiring. Stilgar has so much depth. He is also such a tragic character. I pity him. It is a pity we should try to remember when religious friends or family are blinded by the same. Faith is good. Blind faith is not. We should try to treat them with compassion, even when they are pushy - something I am trying to work on.

"Do you think I am stupid enough to deprive myself of the best of us". This goes so well with what Leto tell Thufir in the first movie when he tried to resign. People allow themselves to be slaves to traditions and rules made by men that came before and that so often leads them to weakening themselves. People do not like to look beyond the next step to take. Honor and tradition help put you on a path but you will become lost if you only use those as your guides.

Look Stilgar, and the weaving influences of the Bene Gesserit, are what make this movie fantastic. They're never ever the main focus, but without them the film is simply NOWHERE near as good. Stilgar to me is the best actor in this whole movie. Paul while the focus is just kinda in the background as the main character. It's super weird to explain, but he gets overshadowed in the subtlest way (throughout the movie) by the excellent plot and storytelling. Dune movies are so good.

The entire movie is about transmutation, in its abysmal form. Paul, after drinking the Water Of Life, is no longer Atreides but a genocidal tyrant. Jessica is no longer her mother but a machiavellian figure. Stilgar is no longer a fierce warrior but a puppet in the hands of a cult. The only one sticking to her way is Chani, running away on Zimmer's saddest and most powerful score, Kiss The Ring, in the final scene. What a masterpiece!

@@magicalpj you misunderstand human nature since obviously you are responding to the unnatural Transhumanist Liberal religious dogma being preached... but that puts you in minority which is why there isn't any negative instances of Stilgar but Chani is studiously ignored which was the intended "message"

@@nationalsocialism3504 Who's talking about transhumanism? I'm talking about religious fanaticism. That level of blind faith in a manufactured messiah is anything but inspiring. The main message of Dune, in Frank Herbert's own words, is to "beware of heroes."

@magicalpj since it's human nature to find fulfillment in following a worthy leader... then by definition of your rejection of humanity is proof of your own religious zeal. It requires religiosity to reconcile your delusional perception with reality... Stilgar is the natural human response to the literal Lisan Al-Gaib fulfilling every prophecy. The Bene Gesserit had nothing to do with Paul calling the biggest sandworm that anyone had even heard about in legend... Paul IS the Lisan Al-Gaib cause he is a Kwistaz Haderach

Whats sad about Dune is the paradise that the Fremen's want is actually a hell, it even becomes hell for Paul which is why he went back to the desert after what he created.

The movie did a better job of showing Frank Herbert's message than the book did.
