1:00 "I'm ready to pledge my life for him" That was a great line. The others were laughing and acting as if this was all a joke, while Stilgar pledges his life. That was quite powerful in the cinema

They were Metropolitan "Northerners" so the deep feelings of Faith are foreign concepts to them... those Fremen lived lives of luxury unlike the Southerners who didn't have the abundance to allow lethargy to settle into them.
@timothydavidcurp7 ай бұрын
Perfect - it is too easy to see Stilgar as almost clownish in his hope. You made his faith much more believable and powerful with this. Thank you.
@yunantheobserver68417 ай бұрын
Truth. As someone who calms themselves from the chaos and challenges of the world with faith seeing Stilgar is like being seen, then seeing the fandom treat him is kinda sad. I know Herbert wrote Stilgar as a warning to how faith and religion could be used to manipulate you but faith is also a tool that allows some of us to persist even in the most impossible of odds. I love the movie and I love Stilgar's portrayal cause it feels like seeing the miracles you've believed but feel you'll never lived long enough to see happening before your eyes. It must feel like a Catholic suddenly being transported back in the time of Jesus miracles, seeing them firsthand.
@timothydavidcurp7 ай бұрын
@@yunantheobserver6841 this vid does a good job of showing Stilgar's (and the Fremen's) underlying hope (heavily emphasized in the book) of transforming Dune, and how this gets tied up (with a lot of Bene Geserit help) with their longing for the Mahdi/Lisan al Ghaib. And Vilneuve is wonderful in not trying to hit you over the head with the underlying faith and hope of his characters - it is there, deep in them, but they don't have to constantly repeat it.
@skillsmachine91647 ай бұрын
If you're correct in the end you cannot be clownish. Your were actually the only right one. Stilgar proved that. And he'd never put faith in another off worlder before this so its not like he's been blatantly wrong in the past.
@timothydavidcurp7 ай бұрын
@@skillsmachine9164 it is one of the things Villeneuve excells at - he can set up a dilemma (in this case - are the prophecies true or just pious propaganda?) and then let the audience have at it rather than tell us what to think.

If you read the books until the Children of Dune, Paul instructed Stilgar to study the past conflicts in humanity's history and he had some character development as he recognized what Paul tried to imply to him (on the matters of Jihad). It makes his character even more intricated by the time. You are not ready to see how this character acted as a comedy relief will bring in the movie when its covered until that part.

Something I believe many people missed is that Janis is the path of reason vs Stilgar is the path of faith. Janis never got the chance since he didn’t have Stilgar’s position, but he saw the signs just as well and challenged Paul because he had no other way to stop what was coming by influence alone, likely not knowing Paul had seen a future with him as his mentor since Paul still completely wished to avoid the jihad (faith path) since that’s all he wanted to “see” at the time.
@thatmckenzie6 ай бұрын
That is all nonsense, as Frank Herbert wrote him, Jamis is a misogynist who can't believe that Jessica took down Stilgar--the best among them!--as if he were a tranquilized toddler. Jamis challenges Jessica to a fight to death, intending to murder her for humiliating him. A woman, however, isn't "allowed" to accept a challenge like that, so Paul is drafted to be the sacrifice for the wounded ego of Jamis. The payoff of the scene, and where the movie fails miserably, is in Paul, himself, being so good with a blade that the Fremen believe he is toying with Jamis, taunting him, instead of just killing the fool out of hand. That's when Jessica has to explain to all the witnesses that Paul has never before killed a man... and the Fremen are in awe that anyone could live to be fifteen without stabbing a man to death.
