Dune War for Arrakis board game- review

Thanks for this review! I picked up the base on nerdzday, I haven’t pulled the trigger on any expansions, I figured I should play first but I saw that they have their preorder going on for the new expansion.. thought about picking up the expansions and the kickstarter content.. but man the 50 bucks for that expansion, 50 for the kickstarter content, and another 60 for smugglers, I could pick up spacing guild for 40.. and then tack on taxes and shipping…goodness gracious that’s a lot not sure I’m willing to fork over that much for the extra content yet or if the extra content is worth that cost

First if all, the pleasure is all mine 😊 Regarding the expansions... look, the base game is good without a doubt. The expansions make it, as I said in the video, more whole and it feels better. I got everything for the game for about 200€ maybe even less. And probably I wouldn't pay more for it. I will absolutely NOT take the new expansion. 50€ plus shipping plus taxes is just too much for an expansion. I suggest to follow 2nd hand websites and be patient. What I would recommend, if you really like the game, is actually to take a look at War of the Ring 2nd edition. Because if you like Dune and you're willing to do the extra miles for a bit more rules, you'd love it. Not sure if you saw, but I have a video comparing between the two games so feel free to check it out 😊

Oh man... you're taking the punch line of one of my next videos 😅 There's no doubt that out of the box Dune is easier to table graphic design wise and maybe how streamlined it is. But after a few games both are good and flow nicely. I need to try WotR expansions, but at the end I think it all comes down to which IP you prefer. Personally, I'm a Lord of the Rings kind of person 😊

Good video as always. I would like to hear about the solo variant if you try it out. I dont see a lot of reviews of the solo mode. I understand it is the only games between this, WotR and SW:R that has an official solo

Thank you 😊 The solo mode was a bit too complicated for me to start learning it. I'll take a bit of a break from Dune and I will try again soon :)

This is a great overview. 31:30 - Mentioning both 'Star Wars: Rebellion' and this game at the same breath only because both are 2 player games which manage "to tell a story" as an epic experience, might confused and even mislead people due the fact that the mechanics are so different and it is enough for people to not enjoy hidden movement mechanism in order to not having fun playing a heavy huge and lone hidden movement game such as 'Rebellion' with all due respect that it's epic game for 2 players which leave you with a story. But... having said all, this review made me very curious to know what you would think of the game Angel Fury.

Thanks for the tip! Since I didn't play it again, I can't testify to its nature. But it will be a good point to compare between them. In any case, the main 2 games will be Dune War for Arrakis and War of the Ring. Soon I will get Star Wars Rebellion and then I'll manage to understand if there's anything to compare or not 😊 Edit: I'll check out Angel Fury

Totally agree with your points. It's the first game where minis are not needed and actually hinder, it's hard to tell people apart. Really standees would have been better.

Absolutely.. I think that's what I'll do to put everything with the expansions in the same box. Makes more sense to me.

The back of the miniatures box has diagram of where the minis go. Makes it really easy to put back up. It takes me about 10 minutes to box back up or less if I'm putting minis that have been defeated back in the box during turns.

Awesome review! This kinda of games 1vs1 "IP story telling" always suffers (or not) from the IP, but that's not my case 🤣 For me Star Wars Rebellion and War of the Ring are similar but at the same time very different games, I can table SW way easier than the WOR because I think SW is a much more approachable game. I'm a huge LOTR fan, a big time Dune fan and a "on target" SW fan, and as far as I understand this game is more close to WOR than to the SW Rebellion, so every day I'm scrolling the 2nd hand market trying to find a copy of this game 🤣 Thank you for the review/tutorial/playthrough 😃 Awesome job!

@@ezbgames one question. Do you think the Kickstarter extras in the base game worth a 50€ price difference comparing to the base game? As far as I know you get a "mini expansion" (possible futures something) and an extra worm mini right? GL on the Euro semi-finals (we will seek revenge next time 🤣) and on the elections stay safe!

Gosh, CMON is possibly the worst at designing inserts... I've been on the fence for this game for awhile. I maaaay have to give it a skip or maybe keep an eye out for a good deal. People are charging stupid prices for this game on the second hand market. But thanks for covering this one! Really appreciate it! I'd like to see a comparison between this and War of the Ring (not sure what that third one you mentioned is, though). Noticed some games in the back that I'm not sure if you've covered, yet. 1) Heroes of Land, Air, and Sea - what are your thoughts on that one? I've almost picked it up a few times. 2) Fallen Land - Have you played that yet? I absolutely adore that game!

I enjoy CMON games quite a bit, I find they usually have a good mix of simplicity/depth/runtime/replayability... But most of their game are now suffering from miniature bloat imo. I had the similar issue with Cyberpunk 2077 where it was hard to find the proper edgerunner and putting them back was also a challenge. CMD is similar if you own more than just the base game. To fully enjoy CMON title, I think you need a 3D printer and print an insert that can allow flexibility in the miniature configuration.

I find it crazy that a game is annoying to play because of a location of a miniature. There should be a limit

I bought and tried this game out a few times but is selling/trading it. It just wasnt for me, the game itself is pretty fun but I didnt enjoy it enough to justify keeping it. I also in general dont play much 2p. I did use a large tacklebox for the minis though, found one that was perfect to store all the games minis in super easy and accessible manner. Made the game so much easier to manage and handle!
