Played about 5 games of this now, it takes around 15 mins to setup if you have all the tiles loose in the box so i would really recoment either more bags or plastic containers as seen in this video. The basic game is quite easy however once you add in the event cards and then the expansion with items it makes it a lot harder! 90-120 mins playtime each game, deff worth picking up or playing

I love this game, but I would have two complaints. 1. The 2nd wave of heroes is actually much easier than the first. The power of monsters and traps goes up so much, the heroes can't keep up. That 1st wave of heroes are a bitch though. 2. There isn't enough oppritunity to build your dungeon. Most people seem to add 2-3 actual rooms in the game, that can be used to produce resources for you. The rest of your dungeon is sterile tunnels, and your dungeon as a whole seems pretty small.

I normally love Chvatil games (and worker placement games!). Mage knight is my favourite game. Alchemists, while not made by Chvatil, was still made at his request, and is in my top five of all time. But your comment that Dungeon Lords is a game with only a few decisions really struck home for me why I'm not sold on it yet.

It's still one of my favourite games and I played more than hundred of different games overall. Decisions quantity is not a problem - in 7 wonders you are also doing just 18+ decisions per game. But it's up to you to make each decision "matter". You could mess with other players in terms of orders, you could master the evilometer and literally choose which heroes you get, you could attract paladin and then make it go to the other player or you could make a perfect setup to catch paladin yourself. Yeah, the game has some minor flaws, but there are not much other crisis management games out there and definitely not much with such a cool setting. Rulebook is also very fun to read.

My biggest gripe about this game (and the reason I decided to sell it), is that unless you're playing a game with four players, you have to simulate what happens as if it were a 4-player game. I also had this problem with Mage Knight's dummy character, but luckily that game was good enough to overlook that mechanic, and it didn't get in the way as much. I love the theme here though. I'm still waiting for that perfect "build your own dungeon" experience that's fun and accessible for most people.

It's only boring with 3 players. With 2 players you each control one of the dummy players and could influence the game to mess with your opponent.

I was really excited when I heard about this game, but I have seen similar gripes about it, and so I think it's best if I try to find someone who owns it to try and play it before spending my cash on owning a copy. I'm also a big fan of Dungeon Keeper and Kalypso's Dungeon.

As soon as you said 'worker placement game' my interest dropped 90%. The limitation of actions for subsequent rounds, the seasonal vs more real time aspect, and the seeming lack of dungeon in this 'dungeon' game are additional issues for me. Thanks for the review, I always enjoy your opinions.

he missed the main point, reading the other players. basicly its better to be the third to pick a action then first, as it gives you more resources or allows you to pick monster first, saving you actions.

Yeah, exactly. And also mastering the evilometer gives you a lot of possibilities in "choosing" right adventurers and taming the paladin )

Nice review, but your face said "meh" right from the start so your summary wasn't surprising. A lot of people seem to sum it up the same way. I loved my first play, but haven't been able to get it to the table again.

Yeah, it is a game for the accountancy type, loving his Excel calculus. And who relishes in guessing what others write into their sheets. And how all the numbers come together. But given that really IS you, that management game is just bonkers!

I was really looking forward to this game but I think the 2 hours gameplay may change that. The question of more book keeping than playing is a recurrent problem with computer game based boardgames. Many players say the same on Starcraft-Warcraft adaptations by Fantasy Flight. I'll guess Day & Night has gone up on the list.

This review is 100% spot-on for me. I had the exact same reactions to it - love the theme, but found the game a bit disappointing. It works much better as a videogame like "Dungeon Keeper," which is an obvious influence, than as a boardgame. And it was infinitely more enjoyable on the PC, despite the fact that you're playing to beat others' scores... I wanted to like it more, but in the end, I was a bit non-plussed. Great theme and artwork, "meh" gameplay.

I have yet to play it or research it extensively but I got the same meh feeling from what little I did look into it. I wouldn't mind giving it a try but I am pretty sure it will just fall under the category of I don't mind playing it but I will never want to own it.

I was really looking forward to this game! The theme is just hillarious and the mechanics also sounded great. Although you say it's not that good, I want to have it anyway. For me the theme can be more worth then the actual game mechanics (e.g. like in "Zombies!!!"). But great review, you presented your point well.

not enough dungeon in this dungeon game. when you first mentioned that it's like dungeon keeper but there's barely a dungeon there. it's like the Hud of a game, including the map in the corner, but no actual game space.

Granted, I haven't done much research on this game as I haven't seen it in stores, but what a disappointment to hear a mediocre rating review.
