Thanks for all the comments! Indeed the video is quite rough looking at it one year apart and I actually did this after my very first DW session so I plan for a more extensive, better structured situational examples later on this year! In the meanwhile, you can check this FREE download I published recently that explores the gameplay differences in much more detail: www.drivethrurpg.com/product/301875/From-DD-to-Dungeon-World

I haven't GMed DW, but I feel like I would have made the theif roll for Defying Danger to sneak around the trolls. If he's worth anything as a theif, he will likely have high Dex. and pull it off while still having a sense of danger due to the possibility of failure.

Sure- it's the choice between 'you just do it' and continue the play from that new position or if you want to put that to test.
@rachi7629

I wouldn't. DW gets pretty crazy if you really follow the "fail foward" rules. In this scenario where failure is so unlogical (the trolls weren't looking for him and were pretty distracted) you would have to create some real crazy stuff or use some cheesy excuse for the failure (ur durr u step on a branch). Why bother? Just let the rogue position himself so he can be a rogue (be a fan of the characters, another DW rule). Like he said, you don't have to cede automatic stealth checks everytime, but you should follow the logic - if you don't, the natural craziness of the Moves system can reaaaaally make a mess of your game and throw the immersion out the window.

@@rachi7629 i would have used Defy Danger for the sneak... maybe startled an animal and puts the trolls less focused on the meal. I would have maybe, maybe had the first chargers decide if they are running distracting (aiding the charge) or defending one of the others. I would have also had the thief roll for his shot from behind the troll as he may have missed and revealed his position or maybe missed so bad that he had made an ally have to duck, making him take a -1 forward (i would do this possibly to set up or play off a bond, maybe the cleric distrusts the thief already).the long and short of it... is that that same scene in D&D 5e will always have a similar set of steps and in DW its way more up to the GM. If you are going for the heroic characters that are hyper competent.... less rolls (like in the video) if you want to be a more active GM and have more options and moves for the trolls you make the PCs roll more. I love the idea of DW. As a person who grew up with D&D 2nd, this is my style of play.

Certainly sounds like "Defy Danger" to me.
@gonzaPaEst

All of these are valid. To Defy Danger or not to Defy Danger, as long as it makes fictional sense. A key difference in DW (in contrast to some other systems) is thay the fiction feeds the mechanics and not the other way around.

It seems like it would be relevant when discussing action economy to acknowledge that in DnD each troll would have 3 attacks per round.

If there’s a chance of failure (the thief sneaking), you should roll. And although the map/minis are nice for a video, the mixture of a combat system that is abstracted as much as DW is, the specifics of grid movement and exact character placement becomes irrelevant and sometimes detrimental to the rest of the system.

This video gives me the impression that in DW, only the melee characters are likely to take damage. Is that the correct idea?

Only if there are no ranged enemies. Of course the GM could have one of the melee teammates take the hit for a missed ranged attack

This didn't provide much info about Dungeon World for me. How do the game mechanics work turn to turn? Is the knockback part of the rules? You said you typically have that happen.

Related to knockback: yes and no. If an attack has +forceful trait it is expected to do things like knockback. Can a PC or enemy still do a knockback without it? Sure, if it is play in the narrative.

Essentially, the only game mechanics in Dungeon World are hit points, damage, and rolling + your stats. (Almost) everything else: turn order, conditions, knockback, etc., is decided by the GM or a player on the fly. That's what's great and/or terrible about Dungeon World, depending on your opinion.
@shaylic3795

Unrelated but it uses the powered by the apocalypse system. Many games use this system. Monster of the week which Adventure Zone ran in their Amnesty Arc. Another popular game using these mechanics is Masks. The game is simpler in terms of mechanics and rules. It’s narrative heavy. I highly enjoy monster of the week and will be picking up dungeon world soon.

In Dungeon World there's no specific skills for stealth but there's a move called DEFY DANGER that can work. If the scene there's a very plausible chance of being detected that would result in something quite dangerous the GM asks you: The guards are coming close, how do you avoid combat with them? - I sneak around past them (DEX) - I KO them by smacking their heads against each other (STR) - I distract them by throwing a rock (CHA) - I look around for another passage (WIS) As you can see "sneaking around" doesn't necessarily depend on how nimble or silent you are, but how creatively you can use your abilities on your favor.
