"I like the idea of an undead warrior rising, not because of some dickish wizard or an arcane loophole, but but simply saying IM NOT DONE YET!!!" Got that from a meme and loved it.

The wights present a great opportunity. Since they retain their intelligence & personality (although probably twisted), I like rolling up an NPC character, and then making a wight out of it. I had an evil king that lost a war, and was killed. He cursed his vanquishers, and was rewarded by Orcus by being made into a wight. Thus, this wight has all the stats & equipment (and backstory) of a high level fighter, plus the advantages of being undead.

I actually read a book where someone actually successfully set up that Necromantic utopia and the citizens thought of being necromanced as an honour. Everything was going fine 'till the damn Paladins showed up and torches the place.

I've heard people bring up the idea of undead being used to do all the physical labor for a community in fantasy settings, and I've seen it be implemented in the Overlord Light Novel series. Still, I've always had an issue with the idea that no one has ever countered. That issue is, wouldn't everybody die from disease if literal corpses are walking around everywhere and handling all the food?

In libriss mortis (e3.5 think I spelt it right) there was the option to have a monstrous class as various undead. So if I had a level 1 gnome fighter (just an example) could I take levels in the undead monster class to kind of role play a slow transformation into the undead. Was thinking I could do some cool things with that.

As for disintegrated PC's or any other form of death there is the 5th-level spell Reincarnate which fashions a new adult body for the creature but you roll a d100 to determine it's race, the 7th-level spell Resurrection specifies that it "This spell closes all mortal wounds and restores any missing body parts." so depending on interpretation may count but I'd rule against this spell working in such a situation, and finally there is the 9th-level True Resurrection can provide a new body for a creature dead for as many as 200 years by simply speaking it's name.

Thanks for the clarification on the nature of the various "resurrection" spells!
@ColtNomad7 жыл бұрын
And actually the players of CR were going to use True Resurrection but the player of the dead character became a revenant instead. Most like because of both story purposes and because the party would throw away the main objective at hand, i.e. the bbg, for resurrecting the character.

The cleric spell you mentioned also prevents the body from being raised as an undead, tho... I wonder if it would have any negative effects on a being that already IS raised as an undead because of it? Or would that body no longer be classified as a corpse, therefore not being a valid target for the spell?
@TheLostArchangel6666 жыл бұрын
Casting Time:1 action Range:Touch Duration:10 days Components:V, S, M (a pinch of salt and one copper piece placed on each of the corpse's eyes, which must remain there for the duration) You touch a corpse or other remains. For the duration, the target is protected from decay and can't become undead. The spell also effectively extends the time limit on raising the target from the dead, since days spent under the influence of this spell don't count against the time limit of spells such as raise dead.

I think it’s important to note that Necromancy itself is not evil, it just involves an energy that eats and decays whatever life is around it... which is evil. Zombies, and skeletons, are not trapt souls. Being a wizard that traps souls makes you evil. Also a body needs a brain/head and a heart for resurrection. This is why skilled assassins destroy either and why dying from brain extraction is scary

With the Critical Role Disintegration he was kinda Resurrected but not. He made a Pact earlier in the campaign with the Goddess Raven Queen. Vecna was trying to ascend to God hood. Raven Queen isn't about that she is the God of natural order of death. So she granted the characters request for a temporary resurrection to fight Vecna with his friends but once the fight was over he barrowed time would be up and he would die again and be her Agent in her plane. So the one your referring to isn't what you think. He has killed off Character in another campaign of theirs and that player made a new character. Critical role does treat death seriously if the players have access to that magic its not a guarantee a multi phase ritual has to be done to try and convince the soul to come back with skill checks and failed check increases the DC of the resurrection successful checks decrease it. Only 3 people can roll a check to try and convince the soul to return. Starting DC 10 for the DM role. Then the DM rolls a d20 no modifiers if the if the roll meets or exceeds the DC the are Resurrected. If not they are gone forever no redos on that character if lost. Every time a character is Resurrected the starting DC increases by 1. Now the 3rd level revivify that is a quick one during combat or shortly after its just a flat DM no modifiers roll. If you fail this roll a more powerful resurrection like 5th level Raise Dead can be attempted later. This is Matt Mercer homebrew rule to not have resurrection automatic without removing it all together.

Zombies in traditional cinema would be considered ghouls in the dungeons and dragons universe because their bite produces more zombies/ghouls. Zombies do not produce more zombies, Necromancy does. Then that rule would be up to the dungeon master. Your universe your rules.

Resurrection in my campaign is not something the players can do. The people who retained the knowledge are powerful clerics who charge a lot of money plus components. If my players use them they notice that enemies have better equipment, magic items, and lairs as the players are funding the war machine of the BBEG. They haven’t figured it out yet lol.
