Paladins: so to Divine Smite you now need to use your attack action, hit, burn a spell slot AND use your bonus action; is there any other damage add in D&D that requires all that? Also, it can now be countered, silenced, nonmagic auraed, stolen, copied, will not work at all against some creatures (level 20 paladin cannot now smite a rakshasa for example) and can't be used on an opportunity attack. This is going way overboard when all that was necessary to stop the nova burst was to limit paladins to one smite a turn (whichever smite they chose) similar to Rogue sneak attack.

Totally disagree with this trend of giving every class the SAME features. Expertise was a Rogue/Bard thing. Giving out skill bonuses to every class just to make em feel better in outside combat situations is dumb. It just leads to watering everyone down and making them all samey....which is just dull. I never tell anyone NOT to play a class. If they want wizard right off the bat and can learn it, everything else is easy. Also, its NOT that complicated. Esp if you are starting at level 1 to 3, there arent that many spells and there is ample information and help likely at the table. What are you saying, again.....dont listen to this dont multi class....its fine. Really, I think people talk up the complexity of DnD when its REALLY not that hard.

Stormwreck Isle is fun. It tries to format itself for non- combat options and let's you play most of the scenarios in the order of your choice and bumps up the later encounters if the PCs have leveled. It also doesn't need a lot of fixing and gives some goals for the pregen characters to follow.

My kid/teen years were all dragonlance novels, every one of them. It was my basis for getting into fantasy, DnD, and tabletop gaming. I am so grateful for these two wonderful people and all the hours and fun that has spawned from their fingertips. Ty so much Margaret and Tracy!

37:46 Just an FYI. Rangers were casters in AD&D and 2e. They were not in the D&D basic game. In 1e and 2e, rangers cast Magic User (Wizard today) and Druid spells but the spells were limited but they had skills and martial abilities then too. Paladins always had a steed same as Rangers had a band of creatures and NPC characters types that followed them.

I was going to comment on the lethality of 2nd Edition too. I don't know what was intended, but the planes seemed meant to be used sparingly for atmosphere and tension, not really a backdrop for adventuring or exploration broadly. Like going in with an group of NPCs to chase a villain briefly or explore a ruin protectes by magic or a powerful companion. You can then sacrifice an NPC to the deadly elements of the plane in a semi-scripted manner to sell the stakes and danger to the players.

I appreaciate all the hardwork you both put in to make Dungeoncast special. It's been one of the podcasts I've looked forward to every week this past year. Thank you both.

Finn's beaten monsters, giants, dragons (including one that's basically Irish Tiamat), reshaped the Irish landscape, and once crushed an opponent with an island. Despite being outnumbered, he led a battle against a divine army led by 2 Kings of The Gods and The Morrigan. Yet Finn still won. Great video. I know there is scant detail for the Para-Elemental Planes but you men gave it a solid treatment. In my current campaign (1/2e, so it’s brutal) I have a heavy elemental flavor / influence. The party has stumbled upon a map of the Archipelago they are traveling thru that shows a volcanic island that’s the lair of an Azer (powerful Fire being that resembles a 12’ dwarf and are known for their skills with metal working). What they don’t know is that the heart of the volcano is a rift to the para-elemental plane of Magma. Shout out to Demogorgon
