Through whatever cosmic accident, some very rare mortal souls become bound to primal elemental fire, these Genies are known as the Efreeti. Commonly manifesting as hulking, muscular, twelve foot tall, devilish-looking humanoids and possessed of innate magical power, the Efreeti reside primarily on the Elemental plane of fire, in the fabled City of Brass.

Best game I have ever been it with the Effreeti was with a 6 year old little girl. The game end up being called ," Little Fire Princess " My chaotic neutral 3.5e 8th-level sorcerer went to cast Lesser Planar Binding. The spell wasn't high enough to Call an adult Effreeti, so a child showed up. The DM's daughter loved playing the effreeti, and he thanked me for coming up with a fun way to get his daughter into the game. With her stuff Aladdin blue genie. So she got to play with two characters at once.

In my world, the tieflings (called Shaytaani) were enslaved by the efreeti for millennia until they rebelled and escaped to the material plane when the war of the ancient high elves weakened the planar barriers.

Genies might be some of my favorite entities in DnD. They're basically gods formed due to the unknown magical forces of the universe. Everyone wants to be them (I could see a self-reflective elemental religion sort of like Buddhism where the end goal is apotheosis into a genie), but genies themselves struggle to balance their hubris that comes from their incredible power with their psychological need for inter-personal validation and esteem.

I like to think of them as less so a being that embodies fire and more so a being that embodies heat itself. Of course fire comes with that, but it’s more than just fire. It’s passion, hatred, hope, pride, honor, jealousy, greed, and pleasure. The emotions it feels are all those that fill you with warmth and all those that make your blood boil. There is no in between, they are either kind and comforting or wrathful and torturous. I find heat rather than fire to be a better metaphor for the Efreeti’s overall disposition. They either love you or hate you. Which one is entirely up to how you interact with them.

My veteran players cringe when an Efreeti offers to grant a wish. They are the best at twisting the words. Player: "My wish is to raise all my attributes" Efreet: "You wish me to raze everything about you?" Player: "Yes. Do that." **player character bursts into flames and disintegrates into ash** Player: "I wish to watch (rival player) die, where the last thing he sees is my gloating over him" Efreet: "You wish that now?" Player: "Yes. Right away." **player character vanishes** Player: "What the f^ck?" DM (me): You will appear in front of (rival player) while he is dying. Player: "I wish all dragons cannot use breath weapons." Efreet: "That is easy." **player character vanishes** Player: "What the f^ck?" DM (me): Your character is transported to an alternate prime material plane that has no dragons with breath weapons. Create a new character or have someone in your party wish you back.

Depending on the DM that is running the game, it is best the have a Rule Lawyer handy. Have a list of Wishes written out already. Word the Wish in away that it will befit the Efreeti in some way. A " Wish " can grant a character up to 15,000gp worth of treasure or magic items. The game shops I played at, you can Buy a Wish from the Efreeti for 30,000gp/xp worth of magic items. To raise their core attribute by a point. Wizard: " I smart I get, the more treasure I can make for you can trade, or bribe with." In my game shop campaign setting, Effreeti compete against the Baator for souls of sorcerers and wizards, and for a bard every once in a while.

I like the idea that they are the cruelest masters but grant the fairest wishes, a Gjinn would make it as non impactful as possible, a Dao would rig it to his favor, a Myriad would rig it to a good story. But they gain honor by giving people what they want most. The more you like their wish the more honor they gain. Unless you imprisoned them of course

An analysis of narcissistic personality disorder is pretty informative when it comes to the psychology of the efreet. They are basically empty inside and insecure, which fuels their behaviors of seeking "narcissistic supply". This includes granting wishes ("love bombing"). You can bet that you will never win an argument with an efreet, because the efreet will never LET you win an argument with them, and will employ every narcissistic trick to prevent you from showing them up - from gaslighting and word salad to baiting and smearing up to physical violence.

As always, great video; thanks for the awesome content! One minor clarification: the "i" on the end of the names "efreeti, djinni," etc. indicates a plural. The singular would be "efreet" and "djinn." Just a linguistic tidbit I thought I would pass along. :)

Enjoyed that piece a great deal. Thank you, AJ. My only issue was in the origins of the Genie-kind in general: mortals that somehow fuse with different elemental traits and so end up immortal elemental Genies of one type or another. The creatures come from the Middle East and even mentioned in the Koran. According to that belief system, the Djinn Pre-existed humanity, but came after the angles. They teach that just as god formed Adam from clay, so too did he form the Djinn from smokeless fire. And they have free will, like human beings do, with the ability to choose between good and evil, unlike his angels and demons which must do good and evil, respectively. In Islamic belief the Djinn were god’s chosen until he made Adam, and the he ordered them to bow before their betters. They refused and were cast out of the world, to spend eternity in space inside of shadows, behind reflections, within sound of the wind, and the heat of the earth’s magma. Some of the Djinn are good, others evil; few, if any, are indifferent. The evil Djinn hate humans and have since the time of Adam. It’s also important to note that the Djinn of Islam are mortal, but mortals that live for hundreds of years. They also believe King Solomon imprisoned a number of Djinn with his magic ring within the lamps and bottles in the folk stories. The Djinn so enslaved cannot die or even age until released from their prison. Thought you might be interested in a real world mythology for these beasties to add some flavor to them.

Nice video AJ. :) What are your thoughts on a powerful noble efreeti being able to grant Warlock pacts? As the efreeti are more "understandable" in nature, and less omnipotent, it would be an interesting relationship. Especially on the promotion / reputation aspect. The Sultan is not indiscriminate in his choice of pact-recipients, not is he forgiving of failure!
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 8 жыл бұрын
I tend to work very closely with what the player wishes, in regard to how the Warlock pact works, and for the most part, the players have enjoyed focusing on quirky rituals and sacrifices, and not enjoyed it so much when the being they have the pact with actually communicates with them. With an Efreeti, it would be the prestige of having a soul sworn to their service and an agent they might possibly use (and it would probably be to take revenge, or deliver a message, or to acquire a very valuable item), but they could just as likely ignore the warlock for the most part, satisfied with collecting on their investment at the fulfilment of the pact. The power granted to the Warlock would be elemental and illusion focused, and to the noble Efreeti, much like granting a wish, granting magical power brings honour to the Efreeti.

For how much they want their names to be spread across the planes fo exists in high regard, I could see one being a interesting & interactive patron for a warlock. An Efrety would prefer a warlock that molty-classed as a bard, or Already has some level of fame due to an event in their life.

Is there anyway we can get a series on the elemental planes? I'm near the end of my campaign and it may be possible that one of my players gets one way transported to the elemental plane of Fire and there is a shocking lack of KZbin videos that cover the planes individually and cohesively. I wonder why that is? I don't have any books that talk about them but from what I gather they seem, maybe to bland? I read about the City of Bronze but is the rest just boring magma? Bleh

What would a grand sultan efreet do in the material plane? My players turned the campaign on its head and ended up stuck there. On the fly I panicked and word vomited. So now the grand sultan and his host of vizier has been over thrown, led by gold dragon and the players opening dangerous portals have accidently freed him into the material plane and got dragged into the plane. When you say that they are made of stone and fire do you mean they can't touch mortals without hurting them, or do you mean mortals shouldn't try to touch them?Are efreeti capable of appearing in a soft fleshy form?
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 8 жыл бұрын
Yes they can appear like a mortal, with illusionary magic, but what passes for a biology for them is largely energy based. As a type of elemental, they have the innate ability to draw energy from matter, so they can create heat without combustion or reaction, kind of like a pyrokinesis effect. Magic allows them to polymorph, and even in their natural form, they are not blazing hot unless they want to be.. but certainly, if they want to scald a mortal who is displeasing them, they can get real hot, real fast.

When I was a teen, I learned that shapeshifting can allow just about anything to mate with anything. I took an entire summer writing halfbreeds (my AD&D world). With an Efreeti shape-shifted as the father, the mother burns to death in a week upon getting pregnant from the inside out and both she and baby die. If the Efreeti shape-shifted as the mother, the child dies in the womb soon after resorting to Efreeti form. If she carries the baby to term as the mother, the baby is a Fire Jan. Basically, a hot to touch human that looks a bit like a tiny-horned Hellboy without the giant hand who is fire immune but has a really tough time with the cold.

I would say about equal. Demons are basically genies of the abyss. And devils are spirits that rival demons in ability as a matter of their role as those who combat demonic incursion. Genies are generally rarer than either though. So it would be fine to have a handful of powerful genie but multitudes of demons and some battle hardened legions of devils.
