17:25 Here is a thought. Much like dragons, the lxitxachitl have magic items of their own. What is a dragon going to do with a cloak made for a humanoid? The Ixitxachitl have wing rings (like ear rings that pierce their wings) and act like rings of protection, or other items. Perhaps they even sacrifice their entire tail for an item that replaces it with an equivolant magical staff. Demogorgon might approve as the ritual to remove the tail would be graphic and brutal filled with pain and the envy of others. Its been a dark morning :(.

So here's a fun fact if you are planning an underwater campaign with these guys. Contrary to what Aj has said there is underwater weather. Underwater storms, dead zones of oxygen-less water, pockets of extremely heated water that spring up, whirlpool at various levels of depth, deep sea silt fog and the dreaded jelly fish bloom storm just to name a few. I can see these death rays, like raiders, coasting in on the heels of a deep sea storm, like mad Max and the dust cloud, screeching obscenities as they pick off prey trying to avoid the treacherous weather.
@Diditallforthexp4 жыл бұрын
Most of what you described isn't weather. Underwater creatures don't have to worry about spontaneous whirlpools or superheated water just rolling through like a storm. Those are localized events caused by specific circumstances. Scalding vents don't roam around. Whirlpools are caused by water falling or being pulled through a hole. Deoxygenated water or brine pools don't move much either, they are weather under water in the sense that a swamp is weather in the surface. If you mean things like currents causing temperature shifts I can dig it, but even a silt fog is just something caused by weather on the surface. It would be like referring to a flood as weather instead of being caused by weather.
@seanrosenau20884 жыл бұрын
@@Diditallforthexp Most of what you said is true. But this is D&D. Any of these 'not weather' things can be caused by 'not real' things. For example underwater whirlpools or hot water can be caused by a portal to the elemental plane of air or fire. Not trying to start anything, just my opinions.
@Diditallforthexp4 жыл бұрын
@@seanrosenau2088 Very true, planar shenanigans abound, but weather they are not. You make a good point about regional effects though no matter their origin. A magically summoned storm or volcanic rift impacts the world just like the real thing, so how can we define the fallout from their effects as different than natural weather? For all we know, the oceans of Toril could be littered with portals and gates to all manner of crazy crap, so who knows what's floating around out there? I totally see your point, and i see what you mean by weather as a broad range of fantasy effects. Consider my mind changed!

The creepy batoids with the tricky name! Wonderful overview of all ray and skate-like creatures Sir. I thought of a great variant that could be added to the ixitxachitl ranks. Torpedo rays! Replace the barbed tail attack with a deadly shock that has a chance to stun hapless adventures that are desperately trying to avoid the vampiric leader's bite and the other more common stingray warriors. Sadly the 5th edition stuff doesn't allow the leader or the underlings to summon demons. Perhaps a school working in tandem could call forth a vile wastrilith or piscodaemon or one of the myriad obscure aquatic terrors from other planes that the referee never gets to use. Honestly any adventure under the waves is like Hanukkah for a ref. Mankind is lousy with myths of horrors that lurk just below the surface and are ready to devour we humble land apes if given half the chance. The ixitxachitl are really fun because they offer a nice alternative to the sahuagin. Severely different culture given their patron and physiology. The architecture of their lairs would be supremely claustrophobic I'd wager. Even worse than fighting kobolds or gremlins because the only weapons that work effectively underwater are polearms, and those would be hampered by the narrow little underwater passages that the demonic rays can retreat into.

Why can't they be implanted with a series of shark teeth to form a flexible bone structure we could animate? Why can't we induce bone growth? We can do that in real life. It has the minor side effect of random growth, leading to chafing against muscles for constant agonizing pain, but when nature overlooks the option to give evil manta rays bones that also grow spikes that protrude from their skin in horrific ways to produce devil ray bear trap horrors that latch onto your face while screaming obscenities at you in abyssal, I think it is our duty to correct those oversights.

Pretty sure it’s a Mayan word probably derived from an actual thing as most DND monsters are actually taken from folklore

Hmm, interesting but why are these Ray fish are intelligent in DnD? I mean, I don't read about them in the Monster manual
@AJPickett4 жыл бұрын
The were most likely created by an even more ancient race, and over the eons, they have benefited greatly from their devotion to Demogorgon. While they do look very much like large fish, they are quite a lot more complicated in every way.

@@AJPickett Replace the "X" es in the name with "SH", read it a couple times, put some spaces in it, and look for the less than subtle, less than mature joke / trap for those who were "south of the border". P.S. Do the rays that inspired these also live around AUS / NZ? It's a Pacific species that Americans normally encounter off Baja Mexico & southern California.

I believe there are eight official pronunciations? The guy who made them got the name off of a Mormon pamphlet. I'll link the article about it. www.enworld.org/threads/monster-encyclopedia-ixitxachitl.663534/
