I'd had one encounter where the setup was dealing with a Helmed Horror riding on a Nightmare, accompanied by a horde of magmin riding hellhounds. The entire thing was, technically, the Magmin's fault since they found the thing and convinced it to go riding and burning things so chaos ensued across the farmland...

These little guys are the PERFECT siege weapon. Yes, siege weapon. More specifically, put these guys on catapults, cast slow fall on them, and launch them over the walls. All you would have to do is tell them you are putting them in a catapult and they would probably do it.

In war time, carefully stored Magmin can be used as both a heat source for hot air balloons and as bombs to be dropped out of them. Especially if you can convince them to fight for you somehow and not just as slave labor. Drop them on your enemies, watch them explode in to puddle of lethal magma, then reform and terrorize the troops that didn’t get killed by the initial lava bombing.

This is incredible. Worst case scenario youre high up and can still summon elementals, pull a few magmins, and watch em drop. That is if convincing them the enemies carbon is tastier than yours doesn't work

My players didn't know about them. They were in a volcanic region when they came up from the lava pools. The first one died and the explosion killed 2 more of them with the bludgeoning damage which killed a few more. The wizard player was mortified as everyone was turned to cinders.

Yeah and they're also one of the easier creatures to deal with Ray of Frost Or cone of cold Or icey sphere Or literally any cold spell if I'm not mistaken does double damage to him and with Ray of frost doing one d4 damage plus your modifier and they have an average of 9 hit points yeah it's dead and if you're skilled at it it doesn't shatter it makes a nice little statue

Our druid might go mental when he finds that druidic gauntlets he gained has power to summon small elementals and when he summons fire elementals what you got bunch of eradic Magmins.

I had one that my Duergar Forge Cleric freed from a wizards fireplace. They were still bound to the prime material plane and ended up following my Cleric around, and the two had a bit of a creation and destruction dynamic and became good friends. Eventually my Cleric found a way to send them back to the plain of fire, but they still come back to visit the Cleric and burn their things occasionally :)

Thought I'd add that Magmin had a cameo in the ill fated Dungeons & Dragons 2 Movie (2005) when the wizardress Melora summons one as she delves the mysteries of Obad Hai (and either Druidic or Divine magic). It promptly leaves the summoning brazier and runs amok in her laboratory. Yes, Wizards of the Coast made a sequel to their horrendous 2000 offering... and again in 2012. Good video AJ. These little guys are usually the first elementals/extraplanar critter that PCs meet due to its low CR. They could also be encountered as bound creatures that provide central heating for a wizard's tower (it fumes in the boiler room, waiting for someone to mar the Planar Binding Circle)... or perhaps a stronghold space in an evil Druid's grotto has a permanently bound Magmin that is given prisoners to play with (they say death by fire is a very painful way to die). In 3.5, the Create Water cantrip (2 gallons per caster level) is instantaneous and can be used to douse critters like this for a full immersion. Just watch the ALS ice water challenge to see how much of it coats a normal person. That spell got upgraded in 5e and sent to 3rd level, so no more 1st level shenanigans by Druids or Clerics.

My players run a small kingdom and having one of these suddenly appear and start burning things would be interesting for them to deal with. Most common village folk won't know what a magman is and my players are new and dont know. Having it being described to the players as a child covered in flames who hops around would be very confusing for the players and I think it could be a memorable experience when these characters are trying to figure out what to do.

Team Mythos You could even use it to segue into a bigger bad guy that moved in under their kingdom and forced the Magmen up to the surface, once your players are high enough level.

I love using these guys to troll parties. I also did the Magman-Iron Golem Master Blaster thing once. I did it for comedy effect but MAN... it was a good boost for the golem.

I could see these guys putzing around red dragon's lair. The dragon's lair would be a mostly dormant volcano were there is still hot magma on the lowest levels. The magmin aren't quite servants but are free to cause whatever havoc in the magma they can, adding to what is already a formidable defense and the magmin purposefully make the magma as explosive and tumultuous as possible for there own amusement so low as the don't disturb the upper levels of the lair. A great way to have a low cr grunt pose a serious threat.

Actually, that gives me an idea. You could use one or more of these guys to make a giant sauna by dunking them with some form of fireproof mechanical apparatus. It would be pretty sketchy ethically though as that would essentially amount to torturing a sentient being. That might make a nice feature for the lair of a fiendish lord like Malcanthet or Fierna.

Joshua Zane Make the floor for the sauna out of metal. Make the floor of the sauna the ceiling of a room underneath. Make the room under the sauna comfortable for a magmin to live in and offer one a new house and free “food” source. Keep feeding it the carbon it craves and have it heat the sauna in exchange. It doesn’t have to be elemental slavery.

I actually used the stats for Magmins to make small elemental creatures that were "unstable". every round they would switch the element they were attuned to (randomly rolled). there were larger versions, but those were the base. The idea was that a rift to the elemental chaos had opened and these were "proto-elementals" that hadn't been attuned to one of the main elemental planes yet

The authors probably took the idea from real life concept, like the on fire for God crap, or emotional like water, waste like the air, and immovable the plane of earth, it's like you create all of these miniature stuff then you combine them to create bigger stuff. I like the behemoths they do this exact same concept but they're created from elemental planar stuff and thrown onto the prime material plane to carry out the wrath of the gods

They may not be exactly evil, but they can easily be egged on to have more "combustible" fun by things more destructive like Fire Mephits. I can see a small gang of Magmin being led/or bullied by a rather big/tough Fire Mephit to do horrible destruction all in the name of "fun".

one day i was sleeping like a baby. I awoke suddenly at the witching hour, heart racing, mind filled with distressing thoughts, in a cold sweat, 'the writings of dnd will be lost to the digital age, the lore will disappear, a drought of knowledge will come upon the land, do i have to step up and save the next generation from ignorance!? how do i do this, to whom do i turn?' I go to the internet and do a search, dnd lore, a video, and hope! AJ pickett "I make dnd lore videos so you don't have to" thank god, thank you, i can go back to sleep. that is one of my favorite intros of yours, it cracked me up the first time i heard it. the magmin seem to prefer retaining their bodies as opposed to moving through the 'stuff' of the elemental planes as other elementals seem to prefer. they are in my mind on a line between most other elementals and the galeb dhur, and those elementals which retain their bodies make the most sense to me (as a human, i suppose). I like the idea of the spirit that moves through rock, but its hard for me to imagine why it would be unlimited in that way but limited in others (if i can animate rock what is the limitation on speed, can i not throw rocks at a greater speed by animating other rocks, etc. the physics is kind of weird.) edit: the aspect where elementals are manifestations of specific sort of concepts, mephits (?) being the words of primordials, and these guys being the primordials' sort of manifested will to play childlike in the 'stuff of creation' in this case fire and earth, is really interesting.

I think other elementals could work rather well with this one. Water based elementals could make large steam clouds to obscure the movements of a person or group of people, I cant think of uses for earth or air but a more creative mind or a specific situation could likely spark an idea.

Fire elementals being immune to all levels of heat kind of bothers me. The heat if a camp fire is nothing compared to the photosphere of the sun, and Sol isn't even an especially hot star. Meanwhile, I'm basically a meat elemental and while I'm pretty resilient against ground beef based attacks, I'm certainly not immune to them...

You're not really a meat elemental. Your spirit is bound to a specific lump of meat. If I buried you in meat, you wouldn't be able to travel through it as an essentially incorporeal medium. Being a living physical being and being an elemental spirit that uses matter as a physical medium are two quite different things.

Kudos to you for a video well done!!! I figured magmin would be able to melt any metallic weapon that hits them. After all they are living lava, and lava is extremely hot. They probably leave smoldering footprints behind. They give new meaning to the word "hot to trot'! Their favorite Foreigner song is "Hot Blooded" and they hate "Cold as Ice"! They should have hell hounds as pets. They shouldn't be totally immune to pyromancy spells but draw strength by it as healing magic. Are they related to the Lava Children? I hope you'll be able to make a lore video on them in the future. As always, keep up the great work you do for this channel!!!! I am a fan of your D&D monster lore videos for years!!! Kudos!!!

1.) If they figue out that creatures usually die from contact with fire, do they try to avoid it when not being attacked? 2.) Are the elemental dragons dragons or elementals? 3.) Do genies grow by consuming elementals (or souls) like elementals do, and is that how primmordials came into being: elementals that grew insanely big and powerful? 4.) Where do new elementals come from? 5.) Dose that mean that the para and quazi elemental plains are gone, or is that what you meant by border region?

For number 2, the answer would be that all dragons are somewhat elemental, but the dragons he mentioned are just dragons that are most at home in the plane of fire or lava. Kinda like the Pyroclastic Dragon.
