@@darthchocolate7911 no, no, it's a thing of my own creation. A sort of shadow. It's the big bad at the end that the party is working to destroy. See it's invading from some distant reality beyond the far realms. It's power is great enough to destroy whole planes. The party has to gather allies, find powerful relics and defeat this thing before it's too late. Shreds of it have already reached the material plane which appear as dancing shadows that seem to watch. They are much easier dealt with, but still nothing small. The party doesn't yet know that this is a thing. They sent chosen to take care of it, they aren't special, so unless they figure it out, the shadow will come.

The problem with aquatic monsters is that DMs have stacks of monsters they only get to use in a water environment. As a result savvy PCs avoid bodies like the plague because they know that they'll have a bunch of encounters as the DM will throw loads of encounters at them in their eagerness to try out these unused beasties.

I may need to rethink my understanding of the cooperation of evil undersea creatures. I've always thought that most evil sea dwelling creatures work together in some fashion due to overlapping goals of their societies or Gods. But that would be foolish to assume Kuo-Toa, Sahuagin or Merrow would work together just because they share similar traits and tendencies. If good aligned sea creatures don't always get along, evil ones must be the same. Not all merfolk are cheerful neighbors, and not all Locathah are helpful and not all Tritons are looking to save strangers.

Aj, in your opinion why did the Merrow go from Mermaids 🧜🏻♀️ with red caps that allow them to shapeshift between terrestrial and aquatic form to being Mermonsters? The reason I ask is because D&D isn’t the only literary entity that has turned the Merrow into monsters.
@AJPickett5 жыл бұрын
I would love to have sat down with Gary Gygax and pick his brain on where these names and concepts all came from, but in this case, I think it was just a matter of finding the name, finding some small bit of info on what it was, and then extrapolating a monster for D&D that fit a niche, in this case, it was just a name given to an Aquatic Ogre.. as for 5th edition, it is taking the name and moving it back closer to its mythological origins, but, still keeping them as a monster type.

On Toril? Absolutely.The far north of the continent of Faerun, past the sort of border wall of the Spine of the World mountains, has the remnants of the giant empire of Ostoria, the few, fierce settlements of Firbolg and human heroes, also there is an Inuit style race of humans, several different tribal identities, including the Ulutiun peoples of the Great Glacier and the Sea of Moving Ice of Icewind Dale. The polar region beyond the foot of the mountain ranges is essentially the homeland of the original Mountain Orcs who were brought to Toril long ago by the Giants. Orc tribes are everywhere, scraping out a meager existence on what little the ice has to offer, but even so, every couple of generations they get enough numbers to require moving south in huge numbers, raiding for food and resources. The polar ocean is home to White Dragons, great dire sharks, polar predators, giant penguins, Remorhaz and Ice Giants, great fur seals, mammoth, toothed whales and all manner of fish, including quite a few sea serpents.

I'm a fan of the harpoon attached to a Desmodu cable. The device pulls the cable back in with a 16 strength so you can spear an opponent and let the device either pull them in or keep them at a set maximum distance. It's also an effective substitute for the retuning enchantment at low level before you get multiple attacks a round. I used the idea for a custom weapon called a Bladed Raven Sword which is essentially a d8 ninja-to with a locking hard sheath for bludgeoning and a pummel shaped like two bird talons. The talons are attached to a similar device to the Desmodu cable housed in the hilt and is useful as a grappling hook that allows the character to ascend or descend at a slow speed without the use of their hands when combined with the specialized sheath mount worn on your back. It's also usable as a reach weapon or a double weapon not unlike a Kusarigama with a sword and a slashing end. It's mostly made of mithril with adamantine cording. I originally created it for a custom class that proved overpowered that also had a lightweight form of scale mail coated in a fire retardant coating. The class never made it passed the testing phase, so I never assigned a price, but it's a pretty cool exotic weapon for any adventurer.

1.) So Demigorgon has abolith and kraken worshiping him? How dose that work? 2.) Was that rift to the abyss temporary, or later closed by something else, or is it still there (and maybe growing slowly)? 3.) How dose demonic corruption work? 4.) Is it like Warhammer corruption? 5.) What things can induce such physical and/or mental changes? 6.) How fundamental dose it get (ex. dose it do things like alter your soul, assuming there are different types of souls)? 7.) Can either be reversed (maybe by things like a wish spell, divine intervention, etc.); if so, how? Dose it matter what or how much corruption has taken place? 8.) What dose that mean for things like demon blooded tieflings? 9.) How dose this compare to far realm taint? 10.) I have been reading some of the planescape lore lately and, while I am just starting, it seems to treat the abyss as just another, extremely horrible, outer plane, even talking about the power of belief having an effect on it. Dose that mean that, for the most part, the multiverse has naturalized the abyss (like an ecosystem adapting to incorporate an invasive species), or is that just outdated lore? I know the abyss is expanding (albeit, from what I understand, the abyss is trying to eat several infinite planes at a finite rate, so at this rate it would take an infinite amount of time) but all outer planes can gain or loose territory based on the belief and alignment of the inhabitants so the only difference is that the abyss itself actively dose this, and dose so to non-outer planes. P.s. also speaking about the abyss, is there something like the blood war in the elemental planes between elementals, genies, primprdials, etc. and demons?
@AJPickett5 жыл бұрын
1.) Unlike many other demons, Demogorgon is an incarnation of the waking fears of sentient life, much like Dendar the Night Serpent feeds on the Nightmares of sentient beings, Demogorgon grows stronger as fear, destruction, and chaos spread across the multiverse. He is less about the prayers, more about inciting his followers to demented acts of depraved violence. It doesn't matter to Demogorgon who or what his followers are, all sentient life is destined to face destruction or utter subjugation to him. 2.) It seems likely that it was permanent until closed, and that yes, it will be growing steadily worse. 3.) The same way that elementals can insert their essence into inert matter, Demon essence can seep into both animate and inanimate matter and subvert it, the Demons actually spawn out of matter that is so corrupted, it can become demon flesh. Think of it as a form of elemental radiation sickness, that is sentient. 4.) Yes, it is very much like Warp corruption. 5.) Extremely depraved, insane, sick acts of shockingly twisted violence and destruction. 6.) Yes, beings who are that far gone generally emerge from the spawning pits of the Abyss as lowly Manes once they die a mortal death.
