Crap Puns over and with that out the way, thanks for clicking this, now let's get into Dungeons And Dragons!
-
Ok so the film stars Chris Pine as Edgin Darvis, an ex-harper turned thief who was jailed after attempting to gain a resurrection tablet to revive his dead wife. Incase you aren't up to speed with your Dungeons and Dragons lore, Harpers are basically a secret organisation who dedicated themselves to protecting the Forgotten Realms. Ed was one of their best members who saved several people's lives, always hit the thumbs up button and managed to capture many a red wizard. However Ed got greedy and after taking their treasure they managed to follow him back home to his wife Zia and their child Kira. Turns out Red Wizards mark their treasure but she was able to hide away their daughter before she could be found and killed by the vengeful group of evil magicians.

Red fat dragon is actually Themberchaud - Wyrmsmith of Gracklstugh, that used his fire breath to heat the great underground forges and temper the famous steel blades manufactured by the gray dwarves of Gracklstugh. In turn, they paid and fed him regularly. Paladin is reference to overpowered DungeonMaster self insert characters.

I played tons of D&D set in this same 'Forgotten Realms' world setting, and read even more of the novels based in the same world. Hearing them drop references like Faerun, Icewind Dale, Underdark, Waterdeep, Elminster, and all the other easter eggs jammed into it, was pretty satisfying. It would be amazing if this franchise became a cinematic universe much like the MCU. There is so much lore to explore ...

A couple of other references: One of the other parties that fight in the stadium are dressed as the 90’s cartoon characters. The sorcerer uses prestidigitation to create a Fresh Cut Grass smell to distract the townsfolk. Fresh Cut Grass is the name of a character from Critical Role’s D&D livestream While the bard doesn’t cast any spells, he does inspire the others to continue on their journey. Inspiration is an ability bards regularly use.

I absolutely loved this movie! Saw it opening night in full IMAX glory, with a packed house of enthusiastic movie lovers. Most surprising: my wife also enjoyed the film! It’s funny, the pace just whips along, and has a heart.

It was a movie written by people who ACTUALLY PLAYED D&D... which is a rarity in modern fantasy movies since a lot of fantasy directors state "I have never read or watched anything affiliated with this property, I think this makes me more able to make a movie based on this..." And we every time end up with an absolute shitshow...

Two words: Drizzt Do'Urden. They could make an entire franchise just on that dark elf's story. And Llolth is a lot more interesting than Vecna. The Vecna archetype has been done into the ground a million times.

Pleasantly surprised how fun this was. I do have a soft spot for Jeremy Irons and Thora Birch but D&D movies had been pretty shit until now. Even Justice Smith who was horrible in Dick Pik, was pretty good here.

The Speak with Dead spell grants the corpse a “semblance of its former life” allowing it to “only” speak the answers, and the spell lasts for as long as 10 minutes. It is a funny joke though to just leave the guy there.

I've never played D&D yet I lived this film, it had a good story, good action (and didn't leave all the action to the last 1/3 like most films do) and had good comedy and good characters 👍

Hello. Can you please explain to me during the Maze Scene of the movie wherein The Magician (wearing green, Barbarian Small guy, The Archer and the Invisible purple woman) is there? I love the D&D tv cartoon series before. I thought they are the original ones and why they are only extras on the film?

The thing that I recently learned that was a *fun fact*? Chris Pine is a son of the guy who some of a certain age might remember played the boss of John and Ponch from C.H.I.P.S. TV show from back in the day, Robert Pine 🤯

8.5/10 is exactly what this movie deserves in my opinion. It could probably have been cut 15-20 minutes short relatively easily, but I was surprised at the spectacular pacing so that's not the biggest downside. Sophia Lillis' character Doric was very underutilized and that was a mistake. Less campy dialogue, more character development for the Emerald Enclave Moon Druid would have increased my personal rating.
