Hey!!! I took bribes of food. Only real pay I ever took was the Game Shop charged players to be at reserved tables and the GMs were given a portion of the charge in store credit which was intended to encourage GMs to take the store membership to get access to miniatures, maps, and the book borrow, as well as for buying snacks from the store and stuff for campaigns, and 90% of my store credit did go to stuff for campaigns :p.

If it's a reasonable rate, everyone paying the DM to participate in the campaign is a great way to ensure that people stay invested in the group instead of coming to 1 or 2 sessions and fizzling out like usually happens. It also gives the DM incentive to play fairly and to create an experience the group will like. Bribing the DM is something else entirely.
