No doubt I need those with "Scotland" on the shank. And I'm not watching any more vids here until I set aside more funds for club collecting. 🤣 I'm already over my limit. Love learning some history on all these clubs. Just watched the back nine of the final round of the 86 US Open because the Power Ridged Ray Floyd irons vid. Thanks 👍

That name stuck in my head when I learned of the "Australian Blade" in the very late nineties,, the only two singles I own are the last incarnation which I think is a cast muscleback, a 5 iron demo and a SW. I have to admit that 5 iron is something nice....on a good swing, lol! Made In Australia, those are highly collectible now days, I have access to a set of "DP30 Australian Blade irons, think they are from '91 or so, but I'm hesitant to buy them. They are for really good ballstrikers no doubt.

i remember buying a Greentree Lee Trevino 2 wood from Woolworths in Hemel Hempstead in about 1979/80 !! My son used Maxfli Australian blades to good effect 25 years ago when he played County Golf. Really nice clubs.

I played nine holes this morning and when I returned the sand bucket to the shed it goes in I found there was a set of the Maxfli made in Australia red dot blades and a persimmon 4 wood with a clear dot in the middle of the face. Couldn't resist giving the 2 iron and the 4 wood a hit, felt nice.

Owned a set of Maxfli Australian blades which i loved the shaft that my set were fitted with. They were "Alta" steel shafts, a black shaft band label lettering with 2 separated black circle lines below the shaft sticker, i remember the shaft in the grip area was curved slightly (like a banana, leaflet came with the new irons stating this) i also remember when i had the grips changed by a pro the new grips kept twisting after being correctly fitted so this spoiled the set as the old grips were cut off, were they a special grip for the curved Alta shaft i always thought years later ?..✴️🦅⚪

Australian red dots were forged from stainless steel, & finished in the slazenger factory in sydney, if they have a serial number on the ferrule they were a custom order. 56 degree sand iron then 4 gaps.

According to "The Golf Club Identification & Price Guide" Dunlop's version first surfaced in 1976: Stamps: Sole - Dunlop. Back Pad - Block Letter Maxfli. Top Line - Red Dot + Made in Australia. 1977-78 version: Same head style as 1979-80 but Stamps are different: Sole - Dunlop. Back Pad - Red Dot Logo + Script Maxfli. Top Line Australian Blade. 1979-80: Same head shape as 81 but stamps are: Sole - Dunlop. Back - Block letter Maxfli. Top Line - Australian Blade. 1981: Same as 1982-83, but NOTE sole construction is NOT radiused but is flat. Also, speaking from experience, there MAY be slight color variations from one year to the next in paint fill. I have a "set" I purchased second hand (1977-78 2-P.W.) that are identical except the 7 and 8 irons have RED paint in the numbers and the rest BLACK. (could be done by a previous owner but it doesn't appear to be the case).

Thanks, that ties in with what I thought for the "Made in Australia". Beyond that the waters get muddy as different versions seem to have been produced in different countries. The Maxfli in script seems to have been an American version as the block letter Maxfli was available in Europe from early 1978 and maybe even 1977.
@deetee22192 жыл бұрын
I believe the story with the Black Dot Australian Blade you used in your comparison was that the American pro's were so impressed with the Red Dot Made in Australia blade that they wanted them in the USA. The blanks were shipped to the USA and ground there. The result was very similar but not quite up to the quality of the Red Dot Made in Australia iron.
@ClassicGolfClubs2 жыл бұрын
The black dots were sold in Europe too, the one I used in the comparison is one of the European Black dot versions. I think that the first set of USA forgings were based on those red dots but as you say, they didn't quite get it right first time out.

Interesting to read (in the advertising shown) how the "Controlite" shafts were designed by Trevino to be stiffer in the shorter irons for more control. I recently read that's exactly what Hogan's Apex shafts were about-less stiffness in the long irons and more in the short ones. Great minds thinking in parallel or did one predate and influence the other? I came back to examine the info here as I'm now curious if Greentree forged these irons or cast them, if indeed they specified one or the other as the heads are not marked "forged" only "handmade".
@ClassicGolfClubs Жыл бұрын
The irons are cast, in the Golf World article at 7:50 it says that the heads are supplied by Precision Products of Cumbernauld, who were a precision casting company who developed some very accurate processes.

I don't know where you're based but here in the UK clastic club prices do seem to have crept up slightly over the last year, but they're still ridiculously cheap for what they are!

I just watched a video of Lee Trevino in the pro-celebrity golf series from 1979 and he had a bag with John Letters on the side.
@ClassicGolfClubs Жыл бұрын
He was with John Letters from some time in the late 1970s. Two club designs were produced in 1979; the Master Mex and the Super Mex but neither bears much resemblance to the Australian Blade. (The Master Mex was the slightly more expensive) There was also a Letters "MM II" model from around 1981 which is closer to the Australian Blade in design, it features Lee's trade mark sombrero but not his name.
