Awesome video! I have a set of Maxfli TM-92 Australian Blades and I have had them in my bag since I won them in a raffle in 1993! The golf club I played at every week back then gave them away in a raffle. I think because they couldn't sell them. I remember MSRP was $475 back then which was a respectable set in 93! Everybody was buying cav backs back then and the average golfers around there probably couldn't swing a blade very well. ;) Mine are in pretty great shape and definitely no rust like that one you had and I do maintain a respectable 6-10 handicap with them so I can swing them OK. I would love to get all those bag rattle dings out of them but I don't have all the equipment to scotchbrite them out, re-sandblast and re-plate them although even when I got them brand new they never were as shiny as yours is after the re-furb. A duller more satin finish was more original. Do they really need the electroplate step or can you get away without?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 3 ай бұрын
Love that you still have these in the bag. Very cool. Yes, if you have any exposed steel, it will corrode again soon even though it looks shiny at the time. And the original nickel has that dull, yellow look, so it looks uneven. Plating is really easy to do. Check out my electroless nickel video for a different method. You can get great results with sandpaper alone, so don't worry about having a bunch of tools. I made a video on how to make your own polisher too.

Hey Brad, thanks for this channel! Love the videos! Just starting to get into restoration of golf irons myself!! Couple questions.. how long do you leave them in the acid bath to remove the old chrome, and how long do you leave it in the nickel solution? I know on the bottle is says, “2-3 min” I believe, but I think it needs longer. I want to make sure it withstands wear. Thanks in advance! Keep ‘em’ coming!
@BradMeehan

I do it for 30 minutes. You can do it longer to build-up a thicker layer, but you're risking pitting or other blemishes the longer it goes (in my experience / inexperience )

Love your content. Would you be able to do a nickel plating on the entire club, but leave the face untouched as to create your own "raw face" irons?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Жыл бұрын
Yessir. You can spray them with clear coat before plating. The plating won't bond to paint Then you can use paint remover to get rid of the clear. You may risk contamination of the solution so you can also try just taping it with something waterproof.

@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 10 ай бұрын
Good question! It takes me a lot longer because I'm screwing with cameras and lights AND I'm chasing every single scratch to give you the wow factor. I'd say I spend about 30 min sanding, 30 min polishing, and 1.5 hours in the plating tank. Most of the time is standing around while the tools do their job. There's not much physical labor involved with this. Also, it's my hobby so I don't generally want to rush through the time I get to spend zoning-out, listening to 80's hair bands on vinyl, and sipping something cold.

I love the “brushed metal” look after the deburring wheel/belt grinder. I have Titleist DCI 962 irons… if I took the deburring wheel to them and skipped the polishing and electroplating process (looks too complex for me), do you think they would rust?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 2 жыл бұрын
If you exposed bare steel, it will eventually rust. You can look into the brush plating method to put a thin layer of nickel on for some protection.

At timestamp 2:00, I correct in assuming that at this point the ugly raw steel portion of the face is still there, and has simply been polished to the point you can no longer see it? Then you plate over the remnants of the original chrome/the exposed areas as they may exist? Or did you strip the entire head and re-plate it off screen prior to the final nickel plate?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Жыл бұрын
I don't strip the whole head to steel, but instead just remove the chrome and layer over the existing nickel since youte just going to add it back any way. The face is still rough when I polish, but I so a pass to level it out. Then, the sand blasting hides the rest of the blemishes from the rust pitting.

How do you clean the club face after the soaks? Do you use the sand paper or the the wheel? With scratch and etc
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Жыл бұрын
Lately I've been using the scotch Brite belt, but it's not required. Sand paper would do the trick and you have more control over how much you remove. It's really just to make it look uniform so you can blast it. The blasting hides the rest of the imperfections.

awsome! 1. why does it need electro cleaning before nickel plating? is it for the better quality of the plating? 2. is it necessary for all type of irons?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Жыл бұрын
Yes. It's to ensure it is clean before plating. Any oils in the metal will block it from plating. It's only necessary for steel clubs that were chrome plated, not stainless clubs. The nickel protects the steel from rust.

Brad, why do you hand sand after the last scotch brite step using the bench grinder? Can’t you just continue to use the bench grinder? Is it for the corners or hard to reach areas only?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like there's a gap in the "grit" of the fine pad and the sisal wheel. When I don't sand, the finish is more cloudy and not quite a mirror finish. More importantly, I hand sand around the lettering. I avoid the lettering with the belt because if you cut through them, they're not coming back. Hand sanding is the safest way to preserve the letters.

I just prefer the brushed look rather than chrome
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 2 жыл бұрын
If you intend to restore them to new, you'll have to plate them even if the finish is the brushed look. The nickel is there to protect the bare steel and will take on the appearance of the underlying metal (brushed, matte, or mirror finish). if you don't, it will rust if you've exposed bare steel. Nickel plating is very easy to do. Most of the work is just cleaning. Then you sit, drink beer and wait.

How do you decide between using a belt sander and a deburring wheel when getting nicks and dings out of the club head? When do you want to use either or?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 2 жыл бұрын
The wheel doesn't remove as much material as the course grit belt, so if there are a lot of dings, I go with the belts or you'll be doing more sanding if you want it perfect. The wheel is great for the corners and small areas, but it does leave a trail of its own scratches. This is why I generally hand sand after using it. The belts are also good on flat surfaces. If you're just getting started, I'd say go with the wheel and get your process down before buying the belts. It's a cheaper entry point.
