I have had my Ninja V since it came out and it's an amazing piece of kit that I did not need. It is great to be able to use multiple cameras with the same SSD which makes workflow easier as you pointed out. It doers come in handy on my X-T3 if I need a front facing screen. Went through a similar "agonizing" time of debating whether or not to buy the Ninja V to go on my a6400. Then, Atomos dropped the price of the Ninja V by some $350 for a month or so. Managed to find the ONE left in stock in Vancouver and raced with money in hand. My trip from discovery to acquisition was about 2 1/2 years and a few crappy used monitors from FB Marketplace. Couldn't be happier that I now have this little beast of a screen.

Hello from the future. I tried recording simultaneously internally on my A7riii and externally on my Ninja V. Worked fine, but the internal record still times out at 29 minutes, and when it stops recording, it stops the Nina V at the same time.
@PrimeInChina

I did the same, I put my a7iii in a small rig with the handle on top. Then the ninja on top of it. I found it adds enough weight that footage handheld comes out a little more stable. Most of all though just being able to shoot in 4k forever without worrying about it stopping recording is nice. Also, I think the screen on the ninja is much better when using manual lenses + focus peaking. Plus, just having a screen anyways is really helpful and it isn't that much more weight to be honest.

I've been using the Ninja V with my Canon 5D Mk IV for about a month now. Mainly I needed to get past the 30 minute recording limit (concert and dance performance shooting), but the Ninja's prores files are noticeably better than the files produced by the 5D, especially in low light/high ISO situations - less noise, no blown out highlights. It is almost like having an entirely new camera. I consider it money well spent.

Great explanation Dunna! I had the Ninja for a while, but it didn't really fit in my workflow so I sold it and got a drone instead. I felt that the drone would add more to the variety I could capture. The Ninja is amazing though! I had fun with it and I would be interested to see how you incorporate it into your workflow. I know about the ProRes saving time from having to convert it when you start the edit, but do you edit off the Ninja SSD? Transfer all the footage then start the edit? Like I said, I would be interested in a workflow video, and I bet there might be more than a few subscribers that find it interesting too. Cheers!

I have one, and it's great, however there are two main downsides imo: 1. You can't record 120fps on the atomos, meaning if you like to shoot a combination of slowmo and regular footage, you will find yourself switching back and forth between the external recording and internal recording, which also requires you to unplug the atomos cord from your camera in order to have the sony's screen work. 2. When recording externally, if you have a camera with duel sd cards, you are forfeiting the duel record feature, which for some professional work may be a deal-breaker and a good reason to record internally instead.

@@MarkHoltze that's all I needed to know. The Sony Fs5 for example can use a external recorder to record 422 10 bit but it's not actual 10 bit. It's still 8 bit. Didn't the guy even say this in the video above? It's not real 10bit, just 422 out of the recorder.

Really? I have graded a bit and it does feel like there's a bit more to it, but I figured that was the 4:2:2. I wonder if the file from the ninja v is 10 bit but the sony is only outputing 8 bit into it. Like upscaling 1080 to 4k... its still just 1080.

I did the same with the GH5 and the Ninja V. So for months I researched and listened how various KZbinr said you only need the Ninja V if you need to record 4k 10bit 60fps and I didn't really care about the 10bit 60fps. In the end I went for it and bought the ninja v and the footage I now have to work with ( which is ProRes LT or HQ) make grading the footage and playback is so worth the cost. The end product that I get from the ninja v gives me a professional and cinematic footage that I was never able to get from the gh5 on it's own. So I get what you are saying . Great video .

Nice! Thanks for sharing! I agree 100% I’ve done one video (for next week) since this one and the whole process was just so much more smooth. Getting exposure is a snap, editing and grading prores is a pleasure. The only downside is added size/weight.

@dunnadidit 3 жыл бұрын
I do about half and half (just using as a monitor vs recording) the prores files are so nice to work with but they are huge. If I know I’m going to be doing a long take, I’ll usually just go to the sd card. But if I need LOTS of space, I have a 1tb hard drive for the ninja so I can shoot for days if I need to. It’s nice and flexible!

Hey Dunna Did It. Have you been able to test the external recording much on this camera since January? I'm curious about the benefits if there are any at all. I saw Gerald Undone's video on this exact topic and I wasn't too convinced. He used 4:2:2 as a way to examine banding but it is the bit depth that affects banding more than anything. 422 comes in most handy with chroma keying. Also, I'm curious to see examples like the one you mentioned here, if it improves color data within S-Log2 or 3 footage. And I'm VEEERY curious about what it does for skin tones. One of my least favorite things about grading S-Log in the a7III is how color data in skin tones falls apart when I use a LUT, even one designed for this gamma, and you get weird blotchy artifacts that either don't match the rest of the skin at all or are distinctly less saturated, creating a block of b&w in the middle of someone's cheek. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, but wish I had a more technical description of it. If recording externally improves this, then buying the Ninja V would make some sense to me. Otherwise I see no benefit other than perhaps shooting green screen content, and using the monitor features, but then Atomos also sells external, camera-mounted monitors for less money. For work, I shoot on a GH5 and for interviews, where skin tones matter most, I shoot in 10bit 422. It does improve things, but I do sometimes find myself correcting similar blotchy artifacts, just not as much as on the a7III. Thanks, man!

HVRIS that’s the camera I shoot with. One thing I learned was when you record in normal picture profiles through the atomos you actually loose some luminance which sucks, you’re not at 0-255 any more. If you shoot in f log you don’t need to worry. It’s a hidden thing I discovered only after getting my atomos on my x-t3 I noticed my blacks looked crushed. The data is there it has to be activated in post, again this is only when recording in standard picture profiles. Hope that helps you man.

Just like it's been told in this video. Too bad Ninja V was 2x the price of Shinobi and I wasn't happy with HDMI starting lag (takes like 5 to 10 seconds to see an image in monitor when turning on the camera) so I still don't have a monitor.

Funnily enough, I just sold my Ninja V and KZbin suggested this video… for my experience, great piece of gear, but made all my set up too heavy: extra batteries, extra battery charger, extra hdmi cable, extra monitor mount, extra handle when using my Ronin S, extra settings to worry about… I found it more a disadvantage than an advantage especially when shooting solo on location…

Do you use an a7III or a camera that is capable of outputting to 10bit or higher? It seems like its a good investment if your camera does the latter, but maybe not so much of its the former. Atomos makes monitors that provide the extra features, just no recording capability. This might be a better investment unless you plan on getting a camera with 10bit capabilities later on.
