you have to understand that in the knockout stages (16 teams left) they always play one game home and one game away and count the goals on aggregate. So when e.g. Rodrygo scored the 1-1 against man city in the second leg it was really 5:4 to mancity, therefore the 2:1 from rodrygo right afterwards was vital to take them to extra time because then it was leveled 5:5 on aggregate and then Benzema scored the decisive penalty for the 3:1 or 6:5 overall

06:20 which is actually what happened with CR7 at United. the first 2 seasons he was there, he was basically a meme (before meme's) he was seen as a player with loads of tricks and skill but no end product and too light weight. Then CR7 bulked up and became an attack machine. Vinicius jr kind of similar, less of the bulking up, but ineffective in his first year at Real, but this year is in beast mode. Benzema is probably the best Center Forward/Outright Striker, the other contender would be Lewandowski. Harry Kane at Tottenham is probably the other main contender, but Benzema is the top of the pile of that type of player at the moment, all 3 are world class though Outright Striker/Center Forward/ Central Finisher Its quite a specific role, there are not that many good ones about at the moment, its not a very fashionable position, but was very common 10-15 years ago, kind of like the NBA "Big man era but less about height and more about strength, smaller more technical players are more common currently

I still get goosebumps when I re watch for the 20th time, Real Madrid was not the favorite on that championship, a lot of key players left the club and everyone was saying there's no chance in hell Real would win that tournament. Also usually on any knock out stage you get some easy teams to beat sometimes, Real Madrid got the best 3 teams in the world (PSG, Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool at the final) at that time with more chances to win than RM. I think there were 3 aspects that made this miracle: First, REal Madrid have a good team, but nowhere near as good as City or Liverpool, but because they know they play for the most successful CL Club in history, there is a huge Placebo-Effect. Then second, when the stadium Bernabeu is on fire, it is a pulsating frightening amazing atmosphere, and third City's manager Pep plays total football, the most beautiful that has ever been played. And he refuses to adapt his tactics to unforeseen things happening against them on the pitch, he doesn't grind out results, he doesn't sit back, he plays the same beautiful tone at all times. And it has cost him so many times. City should have won this 7-1 on aggregate.

Yeah, this season Vinicius and Benzema are the best duo in the world. Their numbers are fantastic. Fun fact is that if you go back 1 or 2 years Benzema had a moment where he asked a team mate to not pass the ball to Vini cuz he was playing way too bad. He apologized, cuz in reality Vini was just 20. For soccer this is very young and he always had Benzema as a big brother to him. Vini improved a loooooooot this season and nowadays Madrid is a completely different team when they have Benzema and Vini together. 🤣

One important point that you seem to be missing is that, starting in the round of 16, games are double, so Real Madrid played the first leg away and the second leg at home, in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Real Madrid has a long history of European victories at their home stadium of Santiago Bernabeu. 1. Real Madrid is a legendary football team but everyone (including themselves) assumed their prime was long gone. Benzema, Modric, Kroos, Marcelo and Casimiro are all very veteran. They were part of the magnificent Real Madrid which, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, won 4 CL in 5 years, three in a row (that is freaking insane to begin with). Nobody, absolutely nobody believed they could get past the round of 16 or, if they were lucky, quarter finals...tops. 2. They were not lucky with the pairings at all. They were paired with Paris Saint Germain (PSG) in the round of 16. PSG has a sh.....load of money and they have a collection of international mega stars like Messi (granted, he's well past his prime, but still), Neymar and, especially, Mbappe. Real Madrid had been trying to sign Mbappe for some years and that, plus other stuff, has caused some bad blood between both teams. Karim Benzema, the leader of Real Madrid, is like the older legend that Mbappe was supposed to replace. PSG played much better and won 1-0 in Paris. A couple of minutes later, Real Madrid scored a second goal. They still lost that game, but they passed to the next round because they had scored 5 goals overall, while Chelsea only had 4. 4. Semifinals they played against Manchester City, coached by Pep Guardiola (a legend of Barcelona, the archenemy of Real Madrid). Manchester City just won the English league, wonderful team, much better than Real Madrid man by man. Everyone assumed beating them would be impossible. In Manchester the English won 4-3 and in Madrid they scored 1-0 at the 73rd minute. Real Madrid would need to score 2 goals to tie the game and 3 to pass to the final in less than 20 minutes against one of the very best teams in Europe. No freaking way. Well...they did, Rodrygo (a youngster coming from the bench) scored two goals in 2 minutes (90 and 90+1), tying the game. Good old Karim Benzema scored the third goal, putting Madrid in yet another Champions League final. 5. The final was with another European legend, Liverpool. Real Madrid won 1-0. The 2022 Real Madrid Champions League was so amazing that books have been written on it. It has been one of the most epic sports feats in history. Absolutely amazing.
