I saw this coming 20 years ago when they put in the parking charges. Dunstable is always going to be squeezed by its bigger neighbours and by the traffic. It needed to keep free parking to get people to travel there. Without this it was always going to become a cheap and tatty centre, a bigger version of Houghton Regis for those who could catch the bus or walk.

Before Covid they did a massive investigation as to why so many Towns were suffering with shopping and they found the reason was the greedy Councils with parking fees were the main reason everyone chooses to go to retail parks instead.

i was born in dunstable when i was younger it was the best place to grow up in have scrapes with the police etc. it was the center of the universe. i drove through it last week i could not believe how run down and empty the hole place was. and that guy was right it need road up grades in the 60 and 70 the town council are fully to blame for Dunstable downfall.

Shopping on the Net? What.... Don't you mean up the road to Milton keynes! Dunstable would be better if they built a bypass and then redid the high street! Also getting rid of the drugs would also help!

I don't think the camera skills can make it look any worse than it really is. It's a true refection of what the town is like. I grew up there and learned to hate it from my earliest years. What an utter dump!

This is now 9 years old, and what has the town council done, they have done nothing to eleviate the high rents, i know two people that shut down their business in Dunstable because of the high rent. The place is twice as bad now, i am fed up with the public getting the blame, the town councilors have tried to turn it into a tourist town, it is not, it is peoples homes and shops, well those that ramain anyway.

This is now 16 years old and they have made improvements I guess, we now have Grove theatre and all that bit, we have very large, rusty plant pots that get it in the way, we have lots of barbers and Romanian shops for cheap ciggies, we have the busway which is a godsend for cyclists tbh, we no longer have The Norman King, The Winston Churchill, First & Last, Wilkos, Farmfoods, the Library.. and it's still chocka block traffic.

I did move out, having been born and brought up in the town, and have never regretted it. Sorry to say but Dunstable is the pits. No traffic planning in the decades since the M1 was opened is the underlying problem, though.

This is before bloody grove thearter and its got like 10x better i say tesco is dunstable and asda so when they say we have to go someware else to do there shopping wtf what do thay mean ? netto. dunstable is way better then luton they have like 100 shops closed. we dont have a problem.
