While the Netflix version is the well known version, the 2006 version makes it cry and eat dirt due to how superior it is. From the characters, soundtrack, and writing, the 2006 version easily beats out the Netflix version due to being a more faithful version to the original story and having a approach to its new concepts shown to being perfectly align in the death not universe. The 2006 version gets a 10/10 in adaptation, 9/10 for a stand alone film, and a 9/10 recommendation. The Netflix version makes 0 effort in vaguely following the anime/manga plot. While it has extremely good visuals, all other aspects of the film make it seem like a student film that followed a badly written death note rewrite. It has forgettable music and walking stereotypes with a little depth so that they don't qualify as robots. -1/10 for adaptation, 6/10 for a standalone film, and a -50/1 recommendation. Thank you for reading my critique of the the 2 death note films

If you want something faithful to the original, read the original manga! What do you mean by walking stereotypes? In my honest opinion, both films look like garbage. The anime is probably the best remake you're going to come across. And the English dub is done excellently. No one needed live action movies. Studios should only make remakes when the original isn't accessible. Both look like shameless cash grabs.

Initially I thought the same, but after thinking about it for a while I've changed my mind, it's the one point in those two movies that breaks the character of L, he's not a hero, he's fighting kira because he enjoys it, then add to that the fact that L had no way of knowing how clashing death note entries would play out, and that they release Misa because she lost her memory, would they have also released light? It just doesn't work for me.

I love the 2006 film because not only does it do everything the Netflix film doesn't, it doesn't shackle itself to the source material either. It's very aware of where it diverges from its source material and uses that to create its own canon, like in Change the World and Light up the New World. Both of those films are set firmly in the 2006 film universe, instead of being film-version spinoffs of the source material itself, which I think makes it all the stronger because it shows the creators genuinely cared about both respecting the source material and telling their own story.

Death Note 2006 and it's sequels are so well made considering it's the original adaption of the story! I don't think few people watched them though, as they were big hits in Japan, which also explains why there are four films total. Also Light Up the New World released as recently as 2016 so it's not like these versions of the characters have faded into obscurity. When the Netflix version released people were saying how much better the previous years release was and how it honoured the characters from the 2006 film so well.

Most importantly: the Japanese version sticked to their own culture, we all love and know. The American version - on the other hand - wants to "reamericanate" (does the word even exist?) the plot and still go along with it's Japanese roots which does not work. 'Cause we anime addicteds 've bounded with the Japanese culture for years now. We became so used to it that anything else besides feels out of place and doesn't convey those feelings.

@@envycentral7281 I agree, but the musical truly impacts on an emotional level. It also focusses on underdeveloped themes and characters. Despite the central focus being the battle of wits between light and l, in the end, the turning point is the tragic one sided love between misa, kira and rem that ends the play. But as a theatre kid, I might be a little biased:)

Personally I think the only show that could work perfectly in live action is Cowboy Bebop and/or Samurai Champloo. Mainly because those shows don't roll by a lot on magic and super powers and all that, it's mostly normal people fighting like normal people. Also, the Keyword is "Perfectly" I think that there was a lot of shows that could work okay in live action but Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo (and some others that I don't mention at this moment) can be perfectly adapted to live action with little to nothing lost in the transition. Most other anime have something that's extremely difficult or even impossible to translate. So yeah, that's the opinion of I. A random commenter.

I would've liked it if it was Near instead of L in the Netflix film. Imagine if it was Ryuk dropping another notebook. Would've been nice to add some depth to Near too.

I own two of the three Japanese live-action films, and I love them. I've also watched the Japanese TV drama which is kind of like a GOOD version of the Netflix film. The characters are very different (particularly L), but actually in a good way. I'm sure I'm going to get some hate for this, but the TV drama version L was probably my favorite interpretation outside of the manga. Like the Japanese live-action films, they paint L in a darker light, going as far as to give him a slight sadistic streak.

Yeah, I enjoyed the drama as well.

The tv drama ain’t no “version of the Netflix movie” lets not compare them because we all know that the Netflix movie can’t touch the drama or any other adaptation of it. BUT YES! I do love that they gave L a more emotional and arrogant side, rather than just him being the “do this do that” person who gives orders from sitting in a chair. His death in the drama was also so much better than the anime. It made me cry and have five mental breakdowns whereas for his death in the anime I was just really sad for a while and in shock. Also his last confrontation with Light…A MIND. FREAKING. BLOWING. MASTERPIECE! I love that he was emotionally at his highest during the fight, screaming stuff like “JUSTICE ALWAYS PREVAILS!” In the anime he would never do that. Besides because of his nonchalant attitude in the anime he always seemed like he was hiding a lot of secrets, which, he probably was. However in the drama it’s pretty straightforward that L does actually enjoy Light’s company at least to some extent, for even if the other half of the time it’s ironically, he does enjoy their little games and it’s written all over his face that he does. I dunno, these tiny little changes in his character made me somehow love him more in the drama than in the anime.

The Japanese creators: Let's make a live acction remake. We must please the fans so do your best trying to match the original manga. Of course it can't be perfect since it's going to be two hours, but at least we can try. The Netflix creators: Let's earn money. Fuck the fans and the original characters. Ruin the whole plot if you want. Just earn money and I'm pleased.

I truly loved and adored the Japanese live action movies because the two main actors; Tatsuya and Ken'ichi were both huge fans of the manga and focused solely on their characters to the point that they didn't interact with one another on set until the movies were done. They also studied every last detail of Light/Raito and L where their mannerisms were completely on point.

Oh damn I didn’t know they were fans of the manga! That’s really cool! Yep you can definitely see that they were passionate about the roles as you watch them.

I seem to remember watching the live action movie (japanese one) and they have a scene where Light writes down someone get's shot at a place and a guy will fire his pistol at this place. This was to circumvent the rules that you can't force someone else to kill people using the deathnote. Just thought it was such a cool thing, it adds layers to a story.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the other two Japanese live action films. The direction they take is quite interesting, although vastly different from the original.
@futurestoryteller6 жыл бұрын
I don't mean to be a a dick, but I'm 3 minutes in and there's already so much that I don't agree with. For example, I don't think the 2006 movie is very good. I think it's forgettable, and that's why it was forgotten. I like that it follows the OG story, in theory, but it doesn't translate that well in such a compressed format. The solution is to either make a really long epic movie (and even with two they struggled to pull that off) or make a TV show, which might suffer for being too stylized and campy or not stylized enough, depending on how closely it follows the anime. Your assertion that there are a "lot of stories" you can tell with the Death Note is what really gets me though, because not that long ago I realized there can be only one. Period. Just about any other story you can think of, I guarantee that some rule, or plausibility, immediately pokes holes in the possibilities, unless you lean into being a carbon copy of the original at some point, because themes plot and character are tightly structured to tell one story. It's a story about pride as a fatal flaw, and as a character who has that flaw, Light's weakness allows the story to progress. Any character without that flaw would be essentially either invisible or invincible, outside of that, the protagonist would have to be utterly incompetent for the author to tell an even rudimentary story.
