I’ve been quite happy with my Echo quiver (6, 5, 4, and 3.3m) despite the minor flaws, but it looks like l’ll be upgrading,.....again🤣. Always pumped my Echo’s closer to 7-8psi, versus the recommended 6psi. Never had an issue with that. I’m thinking the Slick’s will pump sufficiently stiff as well. Keep up the great work Alan! (The early video of you wing foiling on 7-4-2019 immediately convinced me to start winging,....and that you didn’t always have to be surfing a wave to have fun with a wing)

Hi as a learner using a 5mt echo I find it can be a handful. Its fine during sailing but always flips upside down on a fall or jumps about almost uncontrollably on the leash. it would be a lot less tiring it was better behaved in the water. It also has to carried upside down so it doesn't oscillate. Do you think the Slick would be better?

Hi Alan, thanks for another useful video. I currently use the Echo and am looking at upgrading to the slick, would you suggest getting the same size wings as I currently use with the echo or is the slick more powerful and hence I may be better downsizing a little?
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 3 жыл бұрын
I think the slick has more range at both ends. It is more efficient than the echo in lighter wind and more stable in higher wind the the echo. I can't say if you should downsize but I will say you will like the slick.

Hello again, Alan. Thanks for another thoughtful, informative video. Would you advise re: wind speed?. I’m trying to get a sense, your recommendation, on sizes/wind ranges, esp. in 10-15 knot winds for a 150 lb rider. Aloha

@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 3 жыл бұрын
It is hard for me to say, Besides the wind speed, your skill level, your board volume, and your foil size all variables. Once you are up on foil you don't need much power to stay on foil but if you are not very good at pumping up on foil you might need a bigger wing. Sorry I don't have a number for you. For me I would take my 5 meter. Im about 60 kilos, 135 pounds

Thanks Alan - great video. Longtime Duotone loyal kite rider, so looking to upgrade from my current F-One swing. The original Echo boom concept through me off (I'm not an ex-windsurfer) but this seems like a good compromise. I know you don't ride this way in waves, but is it your sense that the Slick is more well behaved than the Echo when luffed behind you on a wave either from front of boom or from front handle? I know that the Echo has some issues here due to the dihedral. PS I love the part where you totally catch up with with wind foiler.
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeffery, The Echo did not track because it lacks the center strut. The strut acts like a "rudder" in the wind. The slick is well behaved compared to the Echo and it does track nicely when holding the front handle. Ken winner spent a lot of time on the issue. I have ridden the F-one swing but not in the waves and never by the front handle so I can't speak from a position of authority comparing the two in the waves.

Thanks Alan, I think your videos behind the patreon wall are great too. Started last June in Maine and have been getting out all winter. Currently have the airush 4 and 5, but want a 6 for our light summers. Question: it looks like the inflatable boom follows the curve of the draft of the sail, and would therefore hold the sail in its proper position during the up or back stroke of a pump, so that when you pull down there would be less play in it. Is this true, and if so, better, worse, or just different. And I feel like having a bar would be great as I get into maneuvers. Thanks!

Thank you Michael for your support on Patreon since November 2020. The strut that holds the boom does lock in the shape. The wing is "tight" and yes it is better. Yes, having a boom makes for much quicker hands the therefore transitions. lmk what you would like to see in future instructional videos on Patreon. Alan

Yes in cold climates it can be a problem if the pvc window is folded. This is the case with all brands that have a window. You can stow the slick without folding the windows.

Hi Alan. Great video great job great site Patreon ! Your video is really helpful to make my decision to go for this or that model. You said in a comment that the boom is very well fixed at both ends and do not twist. Could you confirm also that the boom doesn't move from left to right and vice versa on horizontal axis as it seems that the linkage system is quite different from the Echo and more loose ? I don't want to have a chewing gum in hands and I am looking for 100% power transmission from the rider to the wing through the boom. By the way do you really feel the difference between aluminium and carbon boom ?

My biggest issues with the Echo, besides the need to add foam rings on the boom so it doesn't sink, are rigging and storage size: rigging is a bit involved especially with the extra foam rings you need to add, and storage size isn't ideal since the boom is so long. How is the Slick different there? Thank you! I really dig your videos Alan, and I support you on Patreon!

Aloha Gilles, The boom is much shorter than the echo and very simple rig. The boom slips into a webbing pockets at each end then you pump it up. Simple. Thanks for your support on Patreon. Alan

I’ve always thought they should make the boom out of a paddle. You could paddle home if the wind dies, and save space in the garage.

Thanks for the answer. One more question -- Am I correct in assuming that like the Echo the boom does not twist in the hands (the boom has a solid connection to the strut so any wrist action is transferred directly to the wing)? Thank you for your winging videos and for promoting this amazing sport!

Hey Alan, Great video. Going to try the sport after many years of not wind surfing. My number one sport for years was windsurfing which I gave up after being stranded a mile out to sea without much wind. So this should be a great experience. So not sure how tall you are but a 4.5 m sail in a force 3 just doesnt seem right.... and as you say it depends upon your skill level and the board you are using. My idea is to have lessons until i am intermediate and then buy perhaps a fanatic board and duotone slick sail thats intermediate/advanced. Not sure how many litre board i would need so that it doesnt sink or is it better just to have the board sink a little when you sit on it? Over here in spain lessons are 60 euros for 2 hours. I guess after 2 hours ... you get pretty wasted so I might get a credit note when asking for 10 lessons for 200 euros. What do you think? Good idea?
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 3 жыл бұрын
Aloha David, The board you choose should be big enough to float you when the wind lulls to 0. So at least one liter per kilo. A smaller board will be harder to learn on. As far as lessons, Yes, you could learn on the big boards and move down in size. Be sure to get a recommendation for who to learn from. Had a lesson on a huge board with a 6m duotone wing... I think it was the unit, I had a very think all piece wetsuit and a neoprene helmet. The sun was out. I was so so hot. The instructor is good. He ran me through the gear and gave me info on wind and safety. Took me out. I was like a dripping tap after I pumped the wing up. The good thing is I didn't fall in... but my arms and legs have all got muscle ache... especially triceps. Just seen your first training video... awesome... looking forward to getting on that foil and feathering that wing. Next lesson is tomorrow. The wind is supposed to be stronger so everything happening faster.

Only one more thing I would've liked to see in a video, how it behaves when only on the leash (on the water), is it as tame as on the fronthandle, same as the unit?
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I never really ride that way so I can't answer that question. I can tell you that I have at times held just the front handle and its fine but I have never "walked the dog" and just let it fly at the end of the leash while riding a wave. I prefer hold the boom when wave riding, just my style.
@Rocco_Kurokawa
@Rocco_Kurokawa 3 жыл бұрын
Not riding it on the leash, but when walking into the water, with the echo I often found it quite a hassle how much it flops around and flys up and down, at shores with long shallow waters especially when there are waves it's annoying to swim out having to hold the board foil up side down so the foil doesn't hit ground/stones and also having to hold the wing. The Unit is literally hands off in that regard. Not necessary for a good ride, but it's a quality of life factor.

Having seen the Slick now pretty disappointed at the mediocre quality, some shoddy stitching in places and lack of attention to detail (no wing tip scuff guard!) compared to other brands. With the additional cost of a boom (which is effectively a length of aluminium), basic bag and no leash! Great design, but a pass for me.
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 2 жыл бұрын
Aloha sHen, Thanks for feed back. There are no scuff guard to keep the weight to a minimum. The wing was not design to used on land. The boom does add weigh, not as much with the carbon boom. But the feature it adds is infinite hand placements. I can transition my hands much much faster, making for faster transitions. Did you have a chance to ride it and compare it to your existing wing?
@shen7256

@@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 thanks for the response Alan. No I haven't had a chance to ride the new Slick, just commenting on general build quality, detail and over all package. I'd magine the wing tips are a vulnerable area, on a sandy beach little problem, but handling in less ideal terrain could be for some. Personally I may consider practicing my technique on a skate board on days when the wind is light. The leash really should be part of the package, and a bag rather than a sack. Just my tuppence worth.
