Midnight Sun... such a hidden gem. Big Bang Generation always sounded great live too. Glad this album is getting its due props now. In 1997, it got slaughtered and that was by DD fans! Darker, edgier, experimental and exactly how I wanted DD to sound in 97. For me, their last great [complete] album before somewhat selling out (attempting Rio Part 2 and guest vocals / producers, etc.

I'd still much rather listen to Medazzaland than what I'm hearing so far off Dense Macabre (Duran meets the Addams Family, go jump in a lake Nick R) and Future Crap. Rock Rod and 9/11 Truther conspiracy or not, WaCu saved the band - and Anthony J. Resta's podcast about the making of Medazzaland the album is just incredible. Wished they'd have stuck more with John Jones also. Instead of going back to Mr. Hudson and oh Nile Rodgers who this time gave them like *1 chord*

For me Medazzaland and Pop Trash are two albums that have got a LOT better as I've got older - I can appreciate them so much more these days. But I can't really agree with them "selling out" - they're still amazing live, and some of their latest is just as catchy as it ever was (I'm loving Danse Macabre, with the exceptions being Ghost Town and Paint It Black, which for me aren't that great)

J'adore cet album.

I think Meddazaland is one of the best album DD have done at this moment in time. I believe 'So long Suicide' was written as a reaction to the death of Kurt Cobain and which features John Taylor on bass before he left the band in January 1997 P.s. enjoying these reviews as it's getting through my backlog of editing. Another very 90s sounding album to my ears. Breaks, filtered vox, electronic rock, electronica, alt rock. They even put a record scratch in the last track. All very familiar 90s to me. Out of My Mind Silva Halo Be My Icon (was someone listening to NIN?) Who Do You Think You Are?, the way Simon sang it kinda made think of The Beatles a little. All in all I actually like the sound of this album more than The Wedding Album. It's the darkness, pushing on dissonant/atonal stuff. Thanks again, and on to Pop Trash.

PS: If I'm not mistaking, "Who do you think you are?" is - oddly enough - about Warren. From what I learned about him, (even though he's with no doubt a virtuoso and meant a lot to the band, especially in their great success with the Wedding album) he was quite hard to work with (according to several quotes from band members). My favourite album, edging over Rio, and I am a long time fan but this album was their most experimental and eclectic to date. Although Simon did have writer's block so Nick did step in on lyrics in some places and tracks it still holds up. John was on some tracks but bowed out halfway. He is missed but even so I love what was achieved. You asked about other bands with this electronic/grunge sound around the time , certainly "The Smashing Pumpkins" were heading this way , also "Depeche Mode" on their "Ultra" album, which I feel is Medazzaland's step-brother in relation to the soundscapes and band tension echoed. Also U2's "Achtung Baby" was a similar shift on their sound , with heavy processed guitars and dirty production values, again band tensions.

Enjoying your DD album reactions and breakdowns. Your musical insights are deepening my appreciation for each song. It’s so interesting to hear your perspective and thoughts. I’m a lifelong Duran fan and believe DD is the most talented and intelligent band of all time. I’m a guy, so back in the early 80’s, it was rare for a guy to tell his friends he likes DD’s music. But I did. Have a DD experience I’d like to share. When I was 14, I was fortunate to attend the legendary DD Sing Blue Silver tour concert on April 13th, 1984 at the Oakland Coliseum in California. At this incredible concert, Australian film director Russell Mulcahy (who was working with DD to launch them internationally, a visionary who always set the perfect atmosphere for them) filmed the DD Arena album concert video titled “As the Lights Go Down,” (the title originating from a lyric in the song “Shadows on Your Side”), which eventually aired on Cinemax and MTV. Many of these breathtaking “As the Lights Go Down” song performances are on KZbin and can also be glimpsed in the “Sing Blue Silver” documentary. The band’s energy that night was frenetic: Simon, John, and Andy were acrobats - flying, jumping, and spinning all over the beautifully decorated stage; Nick‘s soundscapes on the synths were masterful; and Roger’s drum percussions were sensational. There were multiple camera cranes swaying back and forth amidst the 19,000 fans in attendance (mostly teenage girls fainting and passing out in the “standing only” floor section). It was pure hysteria! The setlist was perfection, starting with the powerful instrumental “Tiger, Tiger” and moving through many iconic tracks from Seven and Rio, ending with an explosive “Girls on Film” encore. It was a surreal experience. 39 years later and there are still “glass splinters” that “lie so deep in my mind” from that unforgettable night. The craziest thing I witnessed was seeing all the impassioned Duranies outside the Coliseum before the concert, how there were thousands of fans trying to get inside, aggressively pushing, pulling, and banging on all the locked entrance doors around the arena. When the staff finally opened the doors, it was absolute pandemonium and chaos everywhere as there were hoards of fans storming inside, racing to the merch tables to buy DD stuff, people slipping and falling to the ground, countless fans frantically running to the floor area in front of the stage to see the Fab 5. What an experience that was! Best concert I’ve ever seen. DD was “top of the world” back then! Thought fans might appreciate this memory. I always get nostalgic when I think of DD.

1. Out of My Mind (the Perfecto Mix is also great!) 2. Undergoing Treatment 3. So Long Suicide I love this album so much! It has maybe the most novel personality of all DD's albums. I was already a Duranie with all their albums when this came out and was in that smaller group of Duranies who naturally took to it while most others disliked it. Loved Nick and Warren's experimentations, the quirky tone, Simon stretching his vocals and giving me things I'd never heard from him up to that point. Medazzaland also seems one of their most cohesive albums with songs that all form a more unified "vision." It truly is brilliant and underrated.

I remember hearing at the time, that Simon lost his voice before this album and had to go through some serious vocal rehab. Their deal with their record company was coming to end and the album needed to be recorded. So Simon ended up recording his vocals before his voice was fully rehabbed. Not sure how true this is, but I heard this at least 20 years ago and I notice it. Especially on tracks like "Who do you think you are." I do think this album is genius.

Hi there 😊 In 1997 - and like every Duran Duran album that came out previously - I was eagerly awaiting the release of 'Medazzaland', and I was honestly gobsmacked that it didn't get an official UK release ... I had to obtain my copy via an american import, which was no mean feat in 1997 because I had zero access to the Internet. Medazzaland arrived on my doormat courtesy of a mail order company which came out of 'Record Collector' ... My copy was a promotional copy released to the press, and labelled 'NOT FOR RESALE' - I still have it 😉 It is true, (and particularly from 'Big Thing' to 'Pop Trash'), the output from Duran Duran wasn't met favourably by then snobby musical journalists - but ironically Duran Duran were delivering very interesting, unique and very original work to the musical world. With regards to 'Medazzaland', no one one in 1997 was producing material like it, and quite honestly it does sound like something from the future. I'm particularly fond of 'Electric Barbarella', it's driving bass pattern and witty lyrics. But then my ears get distracted by the originality of 'Out of my Mind' and 'Midnight Sun' - fantastic stuff. Apart from Electric Barbarella, Duran Duran really haven't recreated the 'Medazzaland' collection live, and like you I feel is a shame; but on the other hand it's nice to think that 'Medazzaland' is purists little secret ❤

Hands down, my second favourite album from our boys (behind Rio and slightly eking out the debut album). It's Duran at their most experimental, dark, and edgy. So many different sounds from hauntingly moody to punchy dance to psychedlically surreal. Every track just works (for me, at least). Electric Barbarella, Medazzaland, Be My Icon, and Buried In The Sand are some of my personal favourite Duran tracks ever, but the whole album is a joy to listen from beginning to end. Greetings! Here's an album that I didn't like at the time. But I'm a fan since 1981, and you got to be a fan to like this album. A particular one, because the last Taylor went away, after recording only 4 tracks. The recordings were made in a lost feeling atmosphere, due to the broken agreement with EMI and John Taylor's departure. For him, they dedicate Buried on the Sand, with lyrics from Nick, his good friend since early 70's. Michael, You've Got a Lot to Answer For is dedicate to the lead singer from INXS, So Long Suicide to Kurt Cobain, and Medazzaland to Simon Le Bon, with lyrics from Nick, about the treatment Le Bon was going through with midazolam. Of course, Electric Barbarella is right from the film from they made up the band's name, which was also the name of the night club where they gathered in first place. Another particular thing is that there's a lot of material from Nick and Warren, which was to be release by their side project, TV Mania. All this explains the assorted styles and arrangements listened in the album, which was to be the first of DD as a Rhodes / Le Bon / Cucurrullo trio. I think the only recognizable track as Duran, is Out of My Mind. The best one for me, along with Buried in the Sand. I must thank you for these wonderfull videos you made up from DD albuns. Such a very good experience. You may not know, but here in Portugal is very difficult to share the passion for the band with someone. Is always seen like a weird thing from people knowing nothing about music. People just forgot about the band's popular achievement. So THANK YOU very much for the experience. Hey, I'm looking forward to watch videos dedicate to the albums that came next. Including the brand new, yet to come, Danse Macabre. I hope you're planning it!

I really love this album; it's definitely my favourite of their 90's albums. It feels like kind of a deep cut, since there was basically no promotion, it didn't even come out in Europe and whereas Thank you was panned by critics it seemed this was simply ignored by them. I managed to get my hands on it in a second hand store in late 1997 - I assume by fellow European fan who imported it and was immediately dissatisfied with it. I, for my part, enjoy the hell out of basically every song on it, which is rare for me for a post-1986 DD album. Standouts to me are Out Of My Mind and Midnight Sun (there's an even better version of that floating around ("Midnight Sun Alternate") that's definitely worth a spin). Funny enough I asked the documentary people if there was supposed to be a fourth part of the documentary about the album proper and got the answer "The Medazzaland documentary is completely separate to this and will be released at a later stage. " - so, that's something to look forward to.

Have you seen the Electric Barbarella music video? Because you described the guitar solo to what actually what was depicted in the video- robot breaking down. I'm a Radiohead fan too and this album is the most Radiohead-like from DD. Not sure if they were really going for that though.

The album was definitely released by capital but the band were furious of the lack of interest and promotion from the label leading to them parting ways, but part of the agreement was handing over the rights to the album to the band, why the band never released it in Europe until now is a mystery.

Out of my mind(perfecto mix) is great..for me better than the original version..and Midnight Sun (alternate) a demo version is far better than album version...for me.

Was so looking forward to this! I'm an early DD fan, esp 1981-1983, and yet Medazzaland is one of my faves. So much melodic gorgeosity. And amazingly creative, lots of moments musically and arrangement-wise that take you by surprise in a good way. Big Bang Generation and Electric Barbarella I felt like were an attempt to revisit their early song style (dance, electronic, futuristic, combo of upbeat + dark) but with a modern upgrade. Something Girls-on-Film-like about them. The whining guitar (10:20) and E-C-G riff (15:14) in BBG remind me a bit of the end of the GOF Night Version kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWfTcqOqgq5rd8ksi=Gi9KFVdGOXzPqZD6&t=289. And with Electric Barbarella it's the disco beat, racy/lewd vibe, and that bass with octaves (22:11), very John Taylor-ish. Though ironically that's not one of the songs he played on. FYI, JT does play bass on 4 tracks: Medazzaland, Big Bang Generation, Be My Icon and So Long Suicide. The rest of the album, though very different from DD's old style, is incredible in its own right. So Long Suicide has to be my favorite. Who Do You Think You Are always reminded me of Smashing Pumpkins, but DD pulled off that style well. It's an extraordinary album. The fact that I can go back and listen to it from start to finish says it all. Thanks again!

If you turn the front cover upside down, you can see John underneath Warren.

This is an album that I return to time and time again. With the exception of Silva Halo it's always a complete playthrough as the songs are just so good. It's disappointing that they don't include any of them in their current set lists.

When I went to listen to the album, it didn't even cross my mind that the album's collaboration credits. When it came to the drums, it never crossed my mind that it was going to be Roger Taylor because I thought it was someone else. I know the live one was Steve Alexander.
