Syntheziser with bass/electric guitar in 1981...wow these guys were ahead of their time. No wonder they hit it big when they first came out. Sound was a blend but something new, fresh, original. And Simon Lebon on the vocals, priceless
@Noodles37UK7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Roxy, Japan and Bowie. But something else, too. Andy Taylor's my favourite, his guitars. Shame he sounds a wee bit buried in the mix, here

Ultravox 'Systems of Romance' 1978, synth, guitars, bass, drums and John Foxx on vocals. Pretty much the blueprint for this sort of thing.

3:24 - Simon's dancing. 💙 The whole song/performance has an avant garde/experimental feel. This, Khanada, and To The Shore are some of their moody gems. Hard to believe the five of them had only been together for a year when this was filmed - they're already so fantastic!

It's a shame synthesizers were so subjective back then, I think anyone here can really appreciate Nick's subtle nuance of sound blending with the bass.

Same. Shame third lp had production drowning. However, the tracks are often immense, especially the original Reflex'83, New Moon, Tiger, Union and Seventh. Bugger it, Cracks is good too. And Shadows. Third album certainly had something.

@@Noodles37UKI never understood the displeasement with ragged tiger songs. It has some bangers on it. Reflex is the iconic main single out of it but Cracks in the pavement and Crime and passion for me are underrated. I swept by these songs as younger on my playlist but only realised later what a fool I was. John Taylor said that he doesnt particularly care for that album but then I also read somewhere that his input on it was very limited and certainly not that of their first and Rio. Im guessing he disagreed on some things that were left in that felt are ruining the quality of the album? I mean you can tell because their first two albums are polished with all the boys operating at 100% and you can tell, whereas on ragged tiger you can notice the "cracks in the pavement" between the boys on some of the songs. They were shifting in weird direction. Simon and Nick wanted to be melodic whereas Andy and John wanted to rock. That album is probably the reason why they decided on stoping for a year or two and do touring full on because after their 83/84 US tour which was arguably their biggest and when they were without a shadow at the height of popularity and number 1 band in the world for a short time you can certeinly notice the band spliting up a bit. The Bond theme deal is what held them together until 85' otherwise they would have split after the tour in 84' already.

The sound is really cutting edge and original. Rock, synth and bass blended together. Great music with a great producer...... Songs that were original and lots of attitude. They should play the first two albums live as a single show ......

yeah tho. they took alot from david sylvian's band called Japan
@miked31687 жыл бұрын
Not really... japan was more art rock than DD was... DD had more of an edge to them and more poppy..... the only thing that was really taken was that Nick had the same haircut as David there for a while.

they already play enough of the songs from RIO as it is.... Id like to see them not play save a prayer, hungry like the wolf and rio on a set.. play the deeper cuts like new religion or lonely in your nightmare

Duran Duran album is by far the best. I am disappointed now when I see them live (several times in 2010-2011) that they do not do more than Girls on Film, Planet Earth. and Careless Memories from that album. Night Boat, Sound of Thunder, Friends of Mine, and Anyone out There should be part of every gig.

Play it on an Aria Pro II bass (I have a 1981 SB-700) and it will almost make you cry; I'm not joking. In fact, playing any of DDs early stuff on that bass is truly an amazing experience. Now if only I had John Taylor's chops and almost 40 years musical experience...

After watching a lot of old Japan (including their OGWT appearances), I can really see their influence on early DD, but also Japan's originality and innovation. Nick and John talked about Japan's influence on them in the early years so it's not anything against DD. I've been a fan for 40+ years. I love that they took a great influence and have continued to grow with every passing decade.

I wouldn't even say they became a dance band, but more of a pop band. I think the point regarding Colin Thurston is bang on! The sound was not that bad on RIO, but after that it lacked the dark mysterious sound associated with early new romantic bands which had been the hallmark of DD.
