I was there. An evening school trip. The teachers had told us to stay in our seats but the occasion got to us and we all ran to the front of the stage. The support was by John Cooper Clark, who swore quite a lot much to the teachers disgust. I was probably about 14 at the time.

Duran Duran a boy band. Hardly. Very talented all 5 in their own perspective way. Yet raw and original and innovative. No band can come close to the videos this band came out with in the 80s mainly from the first 3 albums.

All top notch musicians, though most of the guys had little experience, just great ideas and work rate. And, most of all, the drum tracks were all a take through the whole song, no punching in and out back then. Yes, some overdubs with rototoms at some places, but those beats, thats recording straight through the whole song in studio

This was filmed a mere two months before they would write and record the album that would launch them into international superstardom, “Rio” ... The way their sound just developed, evolved, and blossomed through the early ‘80s will always be a source of inspiration, wonder, joy, and ecstasy for me ... Their music in its totality will always be the soundtrack to my life.

+CatoMinor EXACTLY. nothing infuriates me more than when I hear people compare Duran Duran to shitty bands like 'depeche mode', 'culture club', 'spandau ballet', and today's 'one direction'. Duran Duran are one of the most underrated rock bands in history. They helped influence and shape the music industry into what it is today: - Credited as being the biggest pioneers for the 'music video' as a serious medium for musicians to pursue. - The 'Fab Five' had an 80's 'Beatlesque' arrival in America - 2nd in world wide popularity only to Michael Jackson. - Pioneered the 2nd 'British Invasion' (which wouldn't have amounted to much without Duran Duran). - Only music act to hit #1 on Billboards hot 100 with a James Bond theme. - First music act to sell a song on-line (Electric Barbarella), going against the stream of the anti-napster lawsuits. - Formed in 1978, and haven't stopped making music since, despite all the so-called 'reunions'. - Nick Rhodes is often credited as being the world's first 'Metrosexual'.
@CatoMinor
@CatoMinor 8 жыл бұрын
BBS narky I agree with you but...Depeche Mode are not a shitty band! They had an interesting evolution too (Violator is an excellent album, for example, their top). And Spands and Culture Club were commercial bands but not at all shitty bands. They are not comparable to all these MTV starlettes like Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, rappers, hiphoppers covered with rings and medallions. This is the real big shit. And about DD: their first two albums, the most influenced by the new-wave, DD and Rio, are absolute masterpieces and i am never tired to hear them !!! I also like Japan, John Foxx, Ultravox and Gary Numan and Human League (from Reproduction to Dare), not to mention Joy Division, Cure, Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunnymen and many others. The music of those years will be never coming back.
@bbsnarky7098

WOW! SOOO excited to find this Priceless Gem! Thanks so much for posting! Love that their punk roots were still clearly showing. No wonder I was so instantly obsessed - it was absolute love and devotion from the first time I saw the Planet Earth video - went to every live show they did in Melbourne in '82, '83 (even met them a couple of times back then) and then later tours except for 2012. Legendary band and this is a GREAT moment in time & what a GREAT set! I'm having a full (one person) Duran festival in covid isolation - Its been amazing to discover so much incredible footage - interviews, docos, demos, specials and performances, that I had no way of accessing back then - God bless the interwebs!!! So happy hanging out back in 1981's - don't want to come back to the hellish disaster of 2020 just yet so think i'Il watch it a couple more times : )

Ah good memories! I grew up in the Far East. Luckly my friend's sister had a casette of their debut album(1981). When I played it, it was 'PLANET EARTH'. And that was one of those rare times in my life when I was blown away! Sometimes I amuse myself by imagining what if it was 'Nightboat' or 'Tel Aviv', not Planet Earth (remember cassette tapes?). Don't get me wrong, I love every single track on their debut album, tastefully dark and even experimental and progressive. I am just thinking about first impression, Then, I knew nothing about them (except an image of them on the cover of the tape). Of course I DID think they were 3 Taylor brothers or cousins plus two friends including a french guy. The small image on the debut album jacket showed 5 stylish, well groomed young men but hard to make out which three were the Taylor brothers. No access to MTV, magazines, not to mention internet, without knowing their reputation as a pretty boy band in England, I just loved them as five young, pretty good, excellent song-writing MUSICIANS. I am glad it happened that way. Along with UK and Camel, DD has been my absolute favorites since 1984!

Quite a few hardcore New Romantics came down from London. It blew me away. Never saw this one. It’s dated but the sound is sooooo good. You can hear everyone’s work. Love it! Sounds a bit punk and rock. Very interesting !

I saw this on MTV a year or so later and recorded it at some point and still remember it perfectly 40+ years later. I watched it a LOT.

So many of these great songs are left out of current sets by DD ... 2016 and they still leave them out. Sad ... such great tunes! I heard that My Own Way is amongst their most hated song ... never played after Rio album tours.

Last year they did. I saw them in Palm Springs and then 2 nights in Vegas and they added different older songs every night. The crowd went wild hopefully they keep it up. That is if we ever get live concerts again...

Duran Duran is much better than K-pop idol bands and BTS because duran duran has written its songs for itself and played instruments

It’s because he plays the bass. It’s a cliche that they are boring and unattractive 🙄 Clearly Duran Duran is built different.

Would have loved to be there. My favorite live version of "Friends of Mine" is on someone's phone that shows their opening/introduction from "Clockwork Orange " the Beethoven Theme. The Hard Rock performance with Warren is pretty good as well (no John Taylor).
