This is my natural and honest reaction and review to Duran Duran - Rio. I have never seen the video until now. I hope you enjoy the reaction. My thoughts and commentary are at the end of me watching the video.

Not a boy band. But Mark, you bring up a great point! I never considered this until watching your reaction, it now makes sense to me. The performers in the 90's boy bands were just doing a job...BUT the corporate executives were the ones who looked back at Duran Duran from a decade before and wanted to recreate them in a factory. That's how "The Monkey's" TV show was created during the 60's, and as an American version of The Beatles, but created by corporate executives. The boy bands of the 90's were the same thing, but trying to recreate Duran Duran instead. Great insight Mark Coleman! A typical "Boy Band" from the mid-late 90's were corporate constructs where a record labels created the acts to fit an image they wanted to portray. Boy Bands from the 90's couldn't play instruments, nor could they write many of their songs... they just looked pretty, danced like their choreographer told them to dance, and sang songs other people wrote for them. Boy bands are fake. Nick Rhodes (Keyboardist) and John Taylor (the BEST BASS GUITAR PLAYER IN THE WORLD!!!) were best friends in school and formed this band in 1978 when they were still 16 and 17. (what were any of us doing at 16 and 17... probably not creating one of the biggest selling bands of the 80's...) By the time they were 20 they had all the pieces in place... Roger Taylor on drums, Andy Taylor on lead guitar, and Simon Le Bon as lead vocals. Duran Duran played all of their own instruments and wrote all their own songs. Even Simon Le Bon (lead vocals) could play a guitar at times when needed, but his instrument was his voice.. he also wrote and co-wrote many of their greatest hits. Nick Rhodes was a wizard on the keyboards and synthesizer, and created many of the mysterious, haunting, and inventive keyboard sounds that nobody else had yet created. Andy was a decent guitarist and created a lot of the notable riffs... his guitar sound was also progressive and had an air of mystery at the same time. Roger was a decent drummer that blended well with all their songs, but John.... John Tayler is IMHO the greatest Bass Player still active in the world of music today. IMO his in on the top 5 list of all time great bass players... ever... , and my personal favorite. His style of bass blends funk, punk, blues, progressive rock, new wave, and even elements of jazz and disco. It is an altogether unique style that many bass players have copied since. They may have been teenaged boys when the formed their band in 1978, but they were professionals, inventors, and masters at their craft and are still to this day what no 90's boy band could dream of... You know why? They are still playing today. I will be at their concert THIS AUGUST in Texas! And they will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year!

This boat is a vintage beauty. Its a "Ketch" style yacht named Eilean that was built in 1936. The boat was sailed under many different owners over the next 5 decades. In 2006, Italian watchmaker Panera saw her in an English channel in a sad state of disrepair. Instantly recognizing her from Duran Duran videos Panera bought her and arranged for her to be completely restored. She was re-launched in 2009 as part of an advertising campaign for Panera. In 2012, some original members of Duran Duran were present when Eilean was featured in the classic yacht regatta in Antigua. They wept as she sailed across the finish line in all her original glory.

The difference between Duran Duran and 90s boy bands is that Duran Duran was a real band that played instruments, wrote their own songs, and gigged around England before getting signed to a record deal. And they're still making incredible pop songs today!

This song cheered me up when I was a teenager and was always the new kid in school because we moved so often and I had self esteem issues. I’m unique and was pretty on a good day. Ya, I could wear a bikini too and was very tan. But lonely. (Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand….!!!) *John Taylor the bassist was the hottest guy alive btw, and the singer, Simon Le Bon was really into sailing yachts.

Mark, I appreciate your reaction. Very Nice. Surprised though that there was not much reaction to John Taylor's bass playing. This song is a legend for the bass. Rio is a metaphor for the United States. After Duran Duran's first tour of the United States in 1981, the band and singer/lyricist Simon Le Bon were in awe of the USA and wrote this song about it. Some other DD suggestions: Planet Earth, Girls On Film, Save A Prayer, The Chauffeur, The Reflex, A View To A Kill, Notorious, Skin Trade, I Don't Want Your Love, All She Wants Is, The Valley, Skin Divers, Come Undone, Ordinary World, The Man Who Stole A Leopard, Pressure Off, Only In Dreams, You Kill Me With Silence and many others.

Great reaction brother. They are a great band and still going strong. They were massive in the 1980’s the biggest band in the world. They have had something like 20 top 20 hits in both the US and Britain. They have a great catalogue but unlike the boy bands you mentioned they play their own instruments and write all their own material. You should check out Ordinary World which is from the 90’s and Notorious from the 80’s which was sampled by Notorious B.I.G. I’ve subbed 😀😀

Thank you so much for doing this! Impressive reaction in that you hit on some things lyrically that were on point. If you delve into DD a bit more you will notice that the lyrics are often very poetic. That is not accidental. Simon Let Bon is the vocalist and primary lyricist and one of the main reasons he became a part of Duran Duran is because that's exactly what they were looking for. Lyrics that were poetic. Through the years, many of the song lyrics will be really out there and hard to grasp, but I think as far as Rio goes, your interpretation was great. So a little background info on these guys, now that you've had an introduction. They have been around since the late 70s, starting off in what was known as the "new romantic" music scene in England during that period. Their first album has some great examples of that in Planet Earth, which has an interesting video to check out. Rio is off of their second album, of the same name and it catapulted them into superstardom in 1982. For the past 40 years, they have gone through numerous iterations and the DD you get..sound and style will vary greatly depending on the era. I could give you stand outs from every era but I feel like to get a good grip on the later periods, starting with the massive MTV darlings era of the early 80s may be best. So I recommend Planet Earth, Save a Prayer and the live version of New Religion from As The Lights Go Down. Back in the 80s they were stuck in a box because of their good looks and the female fan hysteria around them, but all you have to do is see a live performance to realize why they are still actively recording and performing live after 40 years!

NOT A BOY BAND AT ALL!!!!!!! Best band ever. They write their own songs and play their own instruments and practice like a rock band! Also listen to that bass. That is one of the hardest bass lines to play and John Taylor just flies with it! However with their videos a lot of time it's about a story and not them playing but if you check out Rio live from the As The Lights Go Down, you will hear tham and see them live playing it. Not a beat missing!

Duran Duran is no boy band. These guys play all their own instruments and definitely can NOT dance (I say that lovingly as a Duranie of close to 40 years... these white Brit boys can't dance to save their lives LOL). They were the biggest band in the world from around 1983-1985. And they're still going strong, packing them in at arenas. They got a new album coming out in October and the first single from it dropped this week.
