"Hungry Like the Wolf" is a popular song by the British band Duran Duran. It was released as a single in 1982 and later included on their album "Rio." The song's lyrics tell a story of a relentless pursuit, comparing the hunger of a wolf to the desire of a person in search of someone they are attracted to.
"Hungry Like the Wolf" became one of Duran Duran's signature songs and helped propel the band to international fame. It features a catchy melody, energetic instrumentation, and distinctive vocals by lead singer Simon Le Bon. The song's music video, which was directed by Russell Mulcahy, also received significant airplay on MTV and contributed to the band's visual and stylish image.
Over the years, "Hungry Like the Wolf" has remained one of Duran Duran's most recognizable and enduring hits, often performed at their live concerts. Its infectious rhythm and memorable chorus continue to captivate audiences, making it a staple of 1980s pop music and a beloved classic to this day.

Duran Duran are not just music video pioneers. They're the 1st musicians to sell their song Electric Barbarella (1997) via internet. They are the 1st artists to use AI Technology to make a video for their song Invisible (2021). And, they're the 1st band to utilize the video monitor/screen above the concert stage back in 1983, in which every concert pretty much goes without.

@@seanswinton6242 Yes, that's true. They won two Grammy's for video in 1984. One for Best Short Form Video called "Duran Duran Video 45, which includes Girls On Film & Hungry Like The Wolf. And the other for Best Long Form Video, Called Duran Duran (Video Album), which included Duran Duran's first 11 videos from Planet Earth (February 1981) to Is There Something I Should Know? (March 1983). The video album was released in March 1983 along with their single, Is There Something I Should Know? MTV helped Duran Duran get famous just as Duran Duran helped MTV get famous. Also, MTV didn't make Duran Duran famous. MTV was only available to 10 percent of the American household when Hungry Like The Wolf reached #3 on the American Billboard Hot 100 charts. To reach #3 on American radio, you have to have access to the entire American population of 231 million people at that time- not just access to 23 million American.

Andy Taylor married hair-stylist, Tracy Wilson, in 1982 and they're still together. Nick Rhodes married (1984) & then divorced (1992) a model, not a supermodel, Julie Freidman, and he hasn't really dated any supermodels since his divorce. Roger Taylor married (1984) make-up artist & stylist Giovanna Cantone & they divorced (2004). Roger remarried to non-supermodel Gisella Bernales (2007).

Duran Duran were called "The Second Beatles" in the early 80's. But instead of being called the Fab Four they were called the Fab Five. Girls went crazy over them. It was a madhouse everywhere they went. They had to have police protection from all the girls trying to get at them. It was insane. Great blend of punk, new wave, funk, and synth-rock. I could listen to John Taylors bass playing for hours... he is one of the best ever.

One of the all time GOATS on the bass guitar is John Taylor. He and his best friend Nick Rhodes (Keyboards) formed this band when they were still teenagers in the late 70's. Since they never stopped making music, I'm suggesting a song from their 5-decade catalog that may not have been already suggested : 80's : "The Reflex" yes, also try Nile Rodgers produced, " Notorious" Biggie (RIP❤) sampled it. 90's: "White Lines" (yep, they remade Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel & they loved it! They even star in the DD video) or "Come Undone" for original music. 2000's: "Reach Up for the Sunrise" - really anything off Astronaut album. 2010's : Anything from their All You Need is Now (title track is 🔥) album or PG "Pressure Off", a collab with Janelle Monae & Nile Rodgers (Nile worked alot with them over the years, Chic is on tour with them now!) 2020's: "All of You" since "Invisible" (1st A.I. video ever-DD had ALOT of firsts, they are THAT GOOD) I look forward to more reactions, I just subscribed ❤

Love, Love, Love this band. My favorite of all time. As you can see by the comments we take all things Duran very seriously. This song isn’t one I would play for a first time listener because there are so many that are much better. The bass line in Rio is pure funk. John is one of the best bassists around. He makes it look and sound easy. Simon is an incredible vocalist and song writer. Roger, well we all know he’s great cause he needs 2 hands for his. Andy very underrated guitarist in my book. And then there is Nick, the master controller and genius on keyboards. I don’t think any Duranie commenting in this thread would have enough time to truly express what this band means to all of us. Just know they are very loved and for most of us ladies they are the only men in our lives that haven’t disappointed us, so with that I say, play that fucking bass John, play that fucking bass John!!! 💙

They took their name from the movie Barbarella, a character named Durand Durand. Their songs are not easy to breakdown the lyrics. Very open to interpretation. They generally wrote songs so they capsules work with beautiful women. There’s one son in particular that puts that on display in your face. It verges on pornographic, it’s Girl on Film. There’s also Rio but much tamer, just fun. This video is influenced heavily by Indiana Jones.

Duran Duran only has dozens of great videos. That one was one of a handful that they shot on a budget in Sri Lanka. The video went BIG in the earliest days of MTV and Friday Night Videos, and that's how they broke into the US market.
@eamonconnelly8029
@eamonconnelly8029 Ай бұрын
This is an over-generalization. Videos and MTV helped many bands break it in the United States in the early 1980s like with Duran Duran. However this is not the main reason specific to Duran Duran in 1982. MTV was (and is) on cable TV and in 1982 there were around 23 million cable TV subscribers out of 231 million people in the United States. This means that MTV had "access" to just 10% of the American population. "Hungry Like The Wolf" reached #3 on the American Billboard Hot 100 charts, which means the song had a far magnanimous reach to the American audience on American radio'... particularly to popular music radio channels from the largest of markets to the middle markets and to the smallest of markets all throughout the United States. MTV helped get the word out but it was American Top 40 music stations, which in the beginning resisted playing Duran Duran, opening up their playlist rotation to air Duran Duran. Duran Duran was not just found on the few New Wave, alternative & college radio stations who had been playing them regularly but now their music was aired on the biggest conduit for music- Top 40 radio stations.

Artists did not take on the music video to such a high creative level of expression as Duran Duran. In regards to the video being "pretty good" this is an understatement. Take yourself into a time machine & back to the early 1980s. No one made music videos like Duran Duran until other artists like Michael Jackson caught on a couple of years later. Duran Duran were the pioneers of music video. Music videos were typically made as a stage performances or someone in a movie studio making a video.

He's truly a very wise man with almost unparalleled influence in the music industry. Hear tell he's hella cool too... Grounded and true to his word, in an industry full of greedy, out of touch narcissistic liars. It's not a phony persona- He's really a good dude. His crazy ZZ Top style beard makes him look like Father Time, himself 🎯⏳_😏. He is one of the most respected cats in the game fr. Dude is brilliant. Has a great ear & knows talent when he sees it. Regardless of if it's rough, raw & unrefined- OR polished without any rough edges at all. And he knows that perfection lies somewhere in between. And he's really good at helping artists find that sweetspot in between, the one that suits their sound and image, the best. Never seen him be wrong when it comes to assisting artists in finding their pocket, if you will. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Rick Rubin, ladies & gentlemen. He's considered THE expert among experts, themselves. That fact alone- speaks volumes about his talent, character and general badassery... 🌀😜🤘

New Wave stands for the second British Invasion. The second wave of British bands.
@eamonconnelly8029
@eamonconnelly8029 Ай бұрын
New Wave does not stand for the second British Invasion. New Wave is a genre of music that incorporated bands from all over globe such as Duran Duran & Tears For Fears from England, Simple Minds & Big Country from Scotland; The B-52's & Talking Heads from the USA; Men Without Hats & Trans-X from Canada; Yellow Magic Orchestra & The Plastics from Japan; INXS & Split Enz from Australia; Nena & Peter Schilling from Germany; Yello from Switzerland & Falco from Austria to name several. New Wave Music lasted roughly between 1976- 1984/1985. "The term "new wave" is largely associated with music critics, not the musicians themselves. It first appeared in music reviews of The Velvet Underground and New York Dolls in the early 1970s. New wave bands of the ‘70s were largely driven by guitars, owing much influence to rockers like (English) David Bowie and (American) Lou Reed. New wave music is a broad subgenre of rock 'n' roll that combines elements of punk rock, mainstream pop music, art rock, synth pop, funk, and reggae. New wave bands largely emerged during the punk and post-punk eras of the late 1970s and early 1980s, but their influence prevailed throughout many decades of pop rock. The new wave music scene was stylistically diverse from its outset. Some late ‘70s new wave artists-such as Blondie, XTC, Nick Lowe, and Elvis Costello-appropriated the raw punk energy of groups like the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls. Other early ‘80s groups like Human League, Tears for Fears, Devo, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, and Duran Duran embraced synthesizers and funk rhythms. Still, others, like the Talking Heads, Adam and the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, and The Police, incorporated reggae and West African rhythmic concepts to traditional rock music."

The original British wave was the Beatles and the Rolling Stones etc in the 60's. The New wave was the Police, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Phil Collins etc in the 80's. You should try Duran's The Wild Boys, Rio or The Reflex when you're up for a next listen to them. OR, the break away group, The Power Station's Some Like It Hot with Robert Palmer on lead vocals.

Power Station had so much potential. If Robert Palmer hadn't backed out of the tour to promote his Riptide album, they could have gone far. Hiring Michael Des Barres was a mistake. He is a good singer, but can't hold a candle to Robert Palmer. PS's set at Live Aid was painful to watch. John and Andy were at the height of their substance abuse/addiction and it shows.

Phil Collins was a member of Genesis & did solo work but his music was not part of the New Wave Music scene. His music wasn't new wave, it was mainstream pop-centric. Peter Gabriel's music (a former Genesis band member, also) was played on New Wave music radio stations, which more appropriately fit the new wave soundscape.

@bill w The British New Wave and the New Wave music scene are not necessarily the same thing, just like the New Romatic scene and the Punk scene aren't the same thing. The British New Wave, also refered to as the Second British Invasion, was also in the early 80s, where there was a sudden influx of British bands and singer hit the U.S music charts at the same time roughly around 1980-84. They would also include Dexys Midnight Runners, The Human League, Billy Idol, etc. The New Wave music scene was a particularly U.K based phenomenon, and while there is a venn diagram crossover, again, they aren't necessarily the same as Americans referring to the U.S. music charts of the early 80s might use both terms interchangeably. I used to listen at the time to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 at that time, and that's how it was.

The Hungry Like The Wolf single that reached #3 was not the video version. It was the David Kershenbaum mix otherwise known as the Night Version of the track. The track has a longer musical introduction before Simon Le Bon starts to sing along with a more pronounced guitar sound & an emphasis to the rhythm section for dance clubs.

Video directors in the 80s had most of the say what the videos would be or look like. It was the director's "vision" to be displayed. Most often the front man would be pushed to center stage and the rest of the band takes little bit parts like extras in a movie. Before the 80s, you would see a lot of performances taped on tv shows, movies, ect. You would see film of the whole band playing. Then record companies would spend a great deal of energy trying to split the singer from the group by causing a rift in the band. That way they only had one check to write instead of 5 and just use studio musicians for the tracks.

Quite creative & from the fiction category of writings. The way Duran Duran videos were made was based on a collaborative effort, which involved Duran Duran, Duran Duran's two managers, the Berrow brothers, & their video directors. Duran Duran & their managers were not going to make videos and scenes that they did not approve of. It's their video and their brand on the line & what they want to convey as their video artistic impression. Record companies would spend time trying to split the band apart? This is all very imaginative but nonsensical. In the music business there are no guarantees so you ride that milk cow as far as it can go. You don't break up a band that's making money for you to take on a new & unknown endeavor & lose the profits or the money that the band owes to the record label to break what is successful. It's historically known that bands usually sign bad contracts that are heavily in the favor of the record label. So, if 5 members have a contract that says they get 10% of royalties from album sales, the band has to split this 5 ways along with their manager, agent and so on. And, the record label wants to have the singer go solo by breaking up the band? The record label has to payout the 4 other band members to break their contract. Here comes an unwanted lawsuit for the singer and the record label by the other 4 band members. And, the solo artist may want 10% of the royalties, the same as when it was 5 band members, or even more, perhaps 12% or 15% since the artist has more leverage now.

The video did not cost $200K and it was not "was considered one of the most expensive Videos of its time." John Taylor in his autobiography states the band had an advance of $55,000 from their record label for the Sri Lankan trip to film three videos: Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer & Lonely in Your Nightmare, which was partially filmed in London as well. In Annie Zaleski's "Duran Duran Rio 33 1/3" book about the Rio album, Nick Rhodes is quoted about their videos made in Sri Lanka & he states: "We really didn't have a big budget at all... I think people think those things cost a fortune. They absolutely didn't. For the three videos, it was probably less than, you know, a good American diva's makeup budget for one video... They were done on a shoestring and pulling as many favors as we possibly could."

This is not New Romantic & the New Romantic movement was not linked to a band's sound but to their fashion. You see it in their Planet Earth video. This sound Duran Duran had is considered New Wave and New Wave is a subgenre of Rock 'N' Roll Music. Duran Duran's sound was to mix rock and dance music with electronica via synths.

@@eamonconnelly8029 This is new romantic which in itself came from new wave and glam rock. It's just that they weren't accepted at first by the new romantic snobs at club Blitz because they weren't from London. They are however the epitimy of New Romantic in that time period.
@eamonconnelly8029
@eamonconnelly8029 Ай бұрын
@@AgentLemmon No. "New Romantics" was a fashion movement labeled to bands like Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Adam and the Ants due to their style of clothing mainly influenced by designer Vivienne Westwood & Kahn & Bell. The New Romantic movement had more to do with the flamboyant and eccentric clothing influenced by period costumes like swashbuckling pirate attire to the ruffled attire worn by 18th-century dandies. It had nothing to do with their music. "The term "New Romantic" is known to have been coined by musician, producer, manager and innovator Richard James Burgess. He stated that "'New Romantic' [...] fit the Blitz scene and Spandau Ballet, although most of the groups tried to distance themselves from it."[10][11] Though it was a fashion movement, several British music acts in the late 1970s and early 1980s adopted the style and became known to epitomise it within the press, including Steve Strange of Visage, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Classix Nouveaux and Boy George (of Culture Club). Ultravox were also often identified as New Romantics by the press, although they did not exhibit the same visual styles of the movement, despite their link to the band Visage.[a] Japan and Adam and the Ants were also labelled as New Romantic artists by the press, although they all repudiated this and none had any direct connection to the original scene." Most bands repudiated the "New Romantic" label including Duran Duran because it had nothing to do with the band's sound. It was more about the club scene influenced by fashion and not the music. You can say Duran Duran epitomized the "New Romantic" scene all you want because that is what the Press labeled them and these bands, again, based on their fashion. And yes, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Steve Strange, Adam and the Ants all wore frilly & swashbuckling "New Romantic" outfits and that's about it. New Romanticism was not about the music & that New Romantic fashion sense ended in early 1981.
