Still sends chills down my spine. 80s pop is so underrated from a musical standpoint. Some really talented musicians in groups like Duran. The part at 22 seconds especially gets to me. I honestly think that part in isolation transcends the theme of the song or pop music in general. It's very moody and emotive and directly triggers stuff inside you. I think it's way more stirring than the actual words to the song. Even without the lyrics, that riff/arpeggios still stir up the same kind of feelings that love and lust do, that emotional anxiety and vulnerability. You would be able to tell the theme of the song with no lyrics at all. I know that probably sounds over the top but I just think it was a great example of how electronic music can be just as emotionally connective as more traditional methods and that any "serious" electronic artist would be proud to have written it. The fact that it's lurking in a massive pop song makes it even more impressive.

Music was still very human in the 80s. Yeah, people hear all the electronics in new wave. But Save A Prayer and countless more were still SONGS. Cars by Gary Numan may sound very cold and electro but it's still a song. Etc. Rio holds up as an album because of the interaction of the band members. It's a very sensual album because of the mood it creates-not just with Nick's keyboards but everyone else as well.

Budget RC ... you are just so right. What you have written is like a piece from an electronic music thesis. Its a great great song and this is a great cover.

You’ve recreated their sound perfectly! Next time one of their band members quits (it happens often) you should give Simon a call! Awesome job sir!

I love it! Excellent job my friend. I do cover songs and have a couple of Duran's that I did on my channel. One is in Garageband, and the other Ableton Live. My third Duran cover is in the works as I type this. Since we do similar type stuff I'd love to hear your thoughts on them! Thanks. :-)

The arpeggiated line is a little brigher than the real Jupiter 8 but it works extremely well!
@HappyProducer7 жыл бұрын
The 'real line' isn't from a jupiter 8 in the original song. It's the Roland SH-2 through space/chorus echo unit. run from a sequencer CSQ-100 (not technically an arp). Jupiter 8 is used for the lead line (the pitch bending bit). Crumar Performer on strings. You need 3 osc or 2 osc + sub like on SH-2 to get the sequenced line sound properly. 2 Osc (as in jupiter 8) won't sound the same.

Hi, Man! I am trying to remake this synths on my Arturia Jupiter 8. Can u tell these banks and this setup for the arp, pitchbend bit and the strings? Your work is very cool! Congratulations from Brazil ;)

I actually met Nick Rhodes and we talked synths for about 20 minutes; I specifically asked him about Save a Prayer and Rio and he personally said he used his Jupiter-8, I told him I read he used a Jupiter 4. I bought my own Roland JP-8 from Greg Hawkes ( The Cars keyboardist ) a month after hanging out with him back in 2005.

@mechanismmusic3668 жыл бұрын
Excellent... there's just a little more rasp/ringing in the hight end of the arpeggio at the beginning. I reckon the filter could be opened or the envelope adjusted to get that. Really good though!
@HappyProducer7 жыл бұрын
it's an sh-2 in the original song for that part, through space echo run from a sequencer (not technically an arp)

What exactly are you calling "main melody"? I hear arpeggiated chords, a signature synth riff and backing rhythm, but the melody never enters into it.
@ja26465 жыл бұрын
Good sound but I think the pitch bend is too much, just my opinion!
