A late stop in Durand was worth it as we caught one train soon after we got there. We didn't get a chance to check out the inside of the Depot as they were setting up for a Prom event. Now that we have been there we will definitely go back and will know exactly what to do! A downpour on the way back to Imlay City stopped just in time for us to catch our second train of the day! I really wanted to stop in Flint but time did not allow. I am making my list for our next trip downstate which will include the 1225 in Owosso!

OK, you are happy you caught one in Durand. Ha Ha Ha, that's funny. I'm always the opposite. In fact most of the time I can't get thru Durand without being stopped by one. Well, no, I take that back, but if I don't get stopped by one, I see one or at least I hear one. I have never seen a town with so many train tracks going thru it from everywhichway. I'm glad you got to see the depot. It's pretty. This is probably going to seem lame after seeing the depot in Durand, but in the next town exactly 4.5 miles(by train track) South East, in the little teeny tiny town of Gaines, they have turned their old depot into a library. And it's quite cute, considering the size and all. They have a giant Gazebo there on the old depot property that's almost as big as the depot. The peculiar thing about Gaines is the train tracks go diagonally, from North West to South East or opposite. And since they were there first, the whole town was built around them. So the roads go diagonally! I mean you get there driving due East or West or North or South, but once you get into town, you can't go East, West, North or South because the town was laid out using the tracks as the guide. When I first saw it about 43years ago, I was so confused I just couldn't believe it. And, I almost plumb forgot: After I watched your video of the tunnel in Port Huron Friday late I went outside just to see if I could see any Northern Lights, it was too cloudy. So, being the hillbilly I am, I have an old chair on my front porch and I sat down in it a few minutes waiting for my dogs to sniff around and I started hearing the low pitch rumble of train engines. It was a very still night and I could hear the low pitched rumble the engines make while a train was traveling South toward Milford. I think I first head that sound when they were about 4 miles North of M-59. I sat there until the horns blew for about 3 or maybe 4 crossings and then went into the house to google the distance. I figure I could hear those engines for about 6 miles. By the time it got to M-59 it was about 4-1/2 miles away and I could hear the horns very clearly. That is amazing. No wonder when I go to my little house in Bancroft I can always hear a train. I had no idea I could hear them from so far. And you know all about the Steam Railroading institute in Owosso, I have seen the 1225 a few times just driving by. I think it lives right there all the time. OK Nancy, Mighty Fine Business! I hope you enjoyed your trip, and Thank You for all the great shots & I trust you've made it back home safe and sound. ben/ michigan, just a troll living under the bridge.

One of the most pleasing "activities" a person can do is to sit on the porch a spell Ben! I love sitting there on my rocker-lol- and enjoying the sounds and smells of the woods and hoping for a glimpse of some critter or other! I love watching the crazy chickens racing around their huge enclosure! Two times I have heard the local CN from a long distance-once from 15 miles and the other time and the one I consider epic was in Tama Siding. The CN had gone by and I lingered waiting for the elusive wolf to make an appearance, I could hear the train all the way to Nestoria -I counted the crossings so I know exactly where they were at the sound of the horn! Both times I was far from traffic and no sounds except for the quiet and the train horn! When I lived in Middle River Maryland (9th grade) we heard train horns day and night-being so close to Washington D.C. and I think that was my first awakening to the lure of the train horn!

The Durand Train was Train 508, a daily Flint to Moterm Yard (in Ferndale, where the containers are left) to Flat Rock yard. I also often stops in Pontiac Yard. It was on the rarely used (except for it and its counterpart daily Train 507) Flint Wye at the east side of the station as these are the only Holly Sub trains that reverse direction at Durand to go to Flint now. Their main duty is to take containers that arrived from Canada from the east (that were dropped off at Flint from the container trains to Chicago) to Moterm and vice versa. The GTW GP38-2 in the train was probably going to Durand to be assigned to work the yard there. I remember seeing it go by my house south of Pontiac on this train that day.

Kind of like being at the Holy Grail of Michigan railroad crossroads. In the opening scene it looks like some good views of the yard with signals I'm glad you caught the big freight of the day taking the sneaky way around you. That was nice watching that freight at speed. With that cute red building on the side

A nice video of a famous place in Michigan railroad history. Glad you made it out to Durand. That CN freight had a suprise, GTW GP38 #5831 which was exciting to see. Cool scene in Imlay City too. Well done Nancy and a good trip.👍🏻

As a rule, many trains are around 150-200 cars. Some less, and some more. You might see two trains into one. That is, locomotives in front, and then another set(DPU) in the middle of the train. That would be a very long train. In the train you captured, we get to see Intermodal cars, then a mixed freight. A rare catch. Z trains are exclusively Intermodal cars. These make up much of what we see on the main lines. You caught a great train. I had to laugh, when you made a remark, that this is a long train. Watching trains is interesting, and kind be a little boring. But, you'll never know what you'll see. Surprises happen all the time. As a side note, the rails on most of the tracks now, are twice the height of what we see in your videos from what we see you film. Track requirements vary on many factors. So does the speed of the trains. Passenger trains, as a rule, run at faster speeds, than freight trains. Thanks for the videos. It's nice to see a variety of videos, that you show us. That train station, was beautiful!

You got there at 5:00 pm. I left about 4:00 pm, so I just missed you. My wife and I went west to visit relatives the last two weeks and we were able to stop at the the Union Pacific Bailey Yard in North Platte Nebraska. The train you caught in Durand was moving around the High Y. I think you may have been too late for depot museum. Upstairs the Grand Trunk Historical Society and the Ann Arbor Historical Society each have rooms upstairs. They leave about 4:00 pm, so you just missed them too. Maybe next trip.

Glad to see you made it to Durand. You need to get there when you have more time 3 different rail companies use the yard there. Some days it takes a lot just to get thought town lol. I grew up in Holly that was the sub the train got on to use to have a lot of train action back when I lived there not sure anymore. Grand Trunk and B&O,C&O On two different subs. Anyway Great video Nancy
