I always heard only aging in the barrel matters, but I recently drank a 50 year old bottle of canadian club 12 year from 1974 and was highly impressed. So much so that I bought a new cc12 bottle and was let down. Either the recipe changed or age in the bottle shifted the flavor. The 50yr 12yr bottle had a nice dark cherry note. The new bottle was more like butterscotch and vanilla. Still a great bottle for the price, but not the same flavor.

That bottle from so long ago had different water etc. what a wonderful thing to enjoy a whiskey made from a different time. How fortunate. Cheers 🥃

All Canadian rye whiskeys up to and including 12 year olds are best drunk mixed with pop (coke, ginger ale, 7up). Once you get into 18 year olds then they are worth drinking neat.

I buy this Whiskey at the duty free in the airport in Canada for my friends in Europe. They seem to prefer it more than Jack Daniels, they like its smoothness and its lack of harshness in terms of a hang over. They really seem to enjoy its uniqueness and its not too expensive as well.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on this. Definitely used casks on this one, and you are completely right, we do not need to use new charred barrels. I also agree the 12 is much better than the regular. Cheers!

The 12 is smooth. I was surprised after picking one up. Great value as well. Ive had many Canadian whiskies Weisers, Crown, Forty Creek, Alberta Premium etc. CC classic is great for the value . From a Canadian!

I'm a fan of CC 8 and 12 year. The Canadian ones are ground upon and considered "cheap" but you like what you like and I enjoy this.

My father, born in Canada (1908), loved all Canadian whiskies. I believe he mentioned winter rye as a major ingredient. I remember that his favorite was Hudson Bay. He always bought a half gallon bottle on his visits to Canada

What a cool story. And Canadian whiskies use a lot of rye in the mash Bill it’s a grain that grows well in colder climates. I was enjoying Canadian Club last night watching tv. It’s such an easy sipping whiskey. Will have to try to find Hudson Bay and give it a try. Thanks for watching. And cheers to your dads memory 🥃

Enjoyed this review. I'm not much of a Canadian whiskey fan but CC 12 year is one of my favorites. Smooth and rich, very tasty. Another review reported that the 12 year has a higher ratio of malt whiskey in the blend which if true might account for the smooth, mellow flavor. A really nice Canadian whiskey you should try is Alberta Springs 10 year rye. Very tasty with a nice finish, not your typical "Canadian" flavor. Only available in Canada so not easy to obtain.

Canadian blended whiskies don't have a mash bill per se. They distill each grain whisky by itself separately then blend them prior to putting them in the cask. They are very similar to blended Scotch except that instead of a single malt component they use a pot stilled Rye whiskey as the pure flavoring whisky. Very good in highballs and whisky and soda type drinks. Really what they are made for

Yeah, "mash bill" is a pretty American concept really. I see that Canadian Club actually ages the corn, rye, and barley whiskeys separately then blends after the aging is complete.

Does anyone remember the 15 year old release they had many years ago? It was unlike anything Canadian club put out. Very delicious and I don’t think they have ever released that again ☹️

I sure don’t. But my godfather drank Canadian Club and Squirt back in the 70’ 80’s which is where i got my love of highballs from. 👍
