Thanks for the review and promoting this great new plus offering! re. 27.5 compatibility options: the 27.5 Crux on a 40-45i rim will fit on a stock 29/27.5+ Pike with room to spare! This makes a “plus” front end available to many who want to experiment, while running whatever your frame will take in the back. (The 27.5 Crux also gives pretty much a 29 diameter and kind of “mullets” the front.) I’ve been running the 27.5 Crux up front like this with a 27.5x3.0 nobby nic (discontinued!) or 27.5x3.0 Coronado (still available!) in the back of my Middlechild on i40 rims, and it stays super sporty but with that ‘plus’ traction and cush. The fat rim setup you tried seems to defeat that purpose to me. Also regarding diameter vs width, its the VOLUME where plus gets its magic. The new Crux is just an amazing example. Keep Plus alive! 🎉

Plus pikes are fun. Used to have a Salsa pony rustler and loved it. Glad to see a new option on the market for tires.

I just picked up a used Jones LWB and have these currently on order to replace the Vee Speedster. I live in FL and we have a lot of soft sugar sand. Hopeful it will be a good all arounder.

I recently put a Salsa Blackthorn together and built it up with 29 x 2.6, 27.5 x 2.8, and a full 27.5 x 3.0. Unfortunately, a 3.25 tire isn't going to fit without hitting my chain. The 27.5 x 3.0 is hands down my favorite wheel tire combo. 27.5 x 3.0 options are just about gone. I just hoarded a bunch of Specialized Ground Control T7s on closeout. A 29 x 3.25 might be fun to try out on one of my Salsa Bucksaws. That bike is surprisingly nimble with carbon wheels and a set of 26x4.0 Jumbo Jim LiteSkin Evo tires. It sucks the bike industry has basically decided to kill plus tires and bikes. Every bike doesn't need to be 23 pound XC bike on 2.2 inch tires. Plus size is fun size!

This seems like a great option for something like the RSD Sergeant. Not many other bikes in this niche though.

I had a blast on my plus bike on 29 x 3 but always craved more. Just got a Surly Ice Cream Truck with 26 x 4.8. Love it. I'm riding it all the time now on singletrack. It handles great and love the fat tires. No desire to go back to my plus bike. Also can't wait for the snow .

There’s actually a whole bunch of fat bikes and some plus focused bikes out there with more modern and aggressive geometry that the 29+ size would be great for. The 27.5+ would also probably fit on an even bigger range of bikes.

Excellent stuff! I had the 29 x 3.25 version wedged into the arse end of a Trek Stache, and it was about 3mm away from the seat tube, lol. I did actually compare the size of them to some 27.5 x 4.5 Gnarwhals on 80mm Mulefuts, and the Crux on 50mm Rabbit Hole rims were taller, it is a pretty bonkers wheelset, I don't know off the top of my head what boost frames can actually run them at the back, don't think a Krampus can, you can just about get away with it on a Stache, I reckon they're perfect for something like a Pugsley...

I have been looking for a 27.5 lower rolling resistance plus tire for my Framed Bobtrax. I want to stay in the 3” range and was considering the T-fatty Jones has. This Crux 3.25 seems like another good option. How does it feel on pavement? Do you think there would be too much drag. I already have a 26”x4 fat bike. Im thinking the Crux may be too similar.
@RideYearRound Жыл бұрын
I have limited experience in pavement, but rode on plenty of very hard pack dirt and gravel roads. It doesn’t roll as fast as a dedicated gravel tire or super fast xc tire, but it definitely feels better than say a set of Minions.

Unfortunately I sold that bike 4 or 5 years ago (still regret it). Looking back at pictures it should totally fit, but watch for toe overlap since I remember that was a bit of an issue on that bike for me.
@regarcher33763 ай бұрын
@@RideYearRound Thanks so much for the toe overlap tip. I'm riding a large frame and the 29x3.25 has plenty of clearance for me.

Do you have any experience with them in the mud? I’ve heard plus tires tend to plane over mud.
@RideYearRound Жыл бұрын
I don't, but you're right that plus tires do tend to "float" in muddy situations. Tread makes a huge difference though so if you ride in a lot of mud I'd look at an aggressive tread pattern like a Minion, XR4 (if you can find one), or Dirt Wizard.
@skipdawg91254 ай бұрын
The tread pattern looks similar to the discounted and very missed Maxxis Chronicles
@RideYearRound4 ай бұрын
I loved the Chronicles, great tire. The tread is actually quite a bit different with a lot taller blocks and a bit more aggressive ride.

Do you think the tire 29x3.25 on 50mm inner width rim will fit in the frame and fork surly ice cream truck? What Tire clearance normal or not?

Hello. Does anyone knows if the 29 x 3,25 with a 45 internal rim could fit in a surly Wednesday ? I asked Surly and they said it doesn’t.
@RideYearRound10 ай бұрын
I haven't tried it, but I'll say I had to slide the drop outs basically all the way back on the Mayor to fit them once they full expanded after a few days (an extra 10mm or so from where it was with 29x3 XR2s). I'd measure how much space you have between the seat tube and the 3" tire and if it's pretty close without much room to slide the axle back, it's a safe bet it won't work.
@ernestomartinez243610 ай бұрын
@@RideYearRound Thanks. I found some random picture on someone who put then on a Wednesday. Very close fit. I wont take the risk.

@marksandoval5361 Жыл бұрын
I've ridden 29+ for about a decade and in my experience a 2.6 to 2.8 tire on an i30-35mm rim is the sweet spot. Wider tires and rims get too heavy and too draggy. What's good about 29+ tires is that they are taller not that they are wider. 27.5+ tires died out because they are not as tall or as light as 29x2.4 tires. I think that everybody in the biking world pretty much agreed that 29x2.4 was better than 27.5x3.0. If this new 750D(30.5) wheel size that WTB has been prototyping comes out, I would love to see a 30.5(750D)x2.4 tire which would be about the same height as a 29x3.0 tire (and would fit on all suspension forks that currently have clearance for 29x3.0 tires). I think taller is the way to go, not wider! A 29x3.25 tire is 31.0 inches tall. Would that even fit on a standard 29er suspension fork which fits 29x3.0 tires? I'm thinking that the only bikes 29x2.35 tires would fit on would be a Fatbike.
@RideYearRound Жыл бұрын
I think the height is probably my favorite aspect, but I also really appreciate the width for many of the areas that I ride. When you hit long, sandy sections the extra width at a lower pressure makes a huge difference. Very interested in that prototype size though!
@Fisch2k410 ай бұрын
Its not a sweet spot. You just went back so slightly larget regular tires. 2.6 kills the whole purpose of +. Your usecase does not suit a 29+ bike. Thats all there is too it.
