Dan you are amazing designer, it is a pleasure to even look at this tent. It is great you decided to keep both doors (I was worried they will be sacrificed). I hope you have some plans for next year of making a kill and introduce it in 1P version as well. If I count correctly you shaved off around 437g from 2P (hats off), so assuming you can save around 300g on 1P, it would weight 525g. Cannot wait... :-)

I don't know if 1/2 kg is an important weight factor. What IS important is one hand close up, 4 peg stakeout, 2 pole design, tight tub floor, and steep angles. Add to that width and length and small pack size and it's a winner. Great job. Wish I could afford one.

I had high expectations but this really blows them away. I absolutely love the floor: DCF floors always struck me as bonkers and I never realized how big a difference just swapping out the floor would make a packed size. To say nothing of that sweet tensioning design (including the downsloped mesh to eliminate wicking). Just brilliant!!

My goodness does this design just make me giddy. Congratulations on bringing legitimate innovation to the tent game and designing what looks to be a spectacular tent that checks all of the boxes without sacrificing anything! As a proud owner of the 1p and 2p, it's not likely in the cards for a purchase, but when the time comes for a single-walled DCF tent it 100% is at the top of the list, and it doesn't really even seem close.

Please make a double-walled tent with a dyneema exterior and a 50 inch wide floor. You know, something between the x-mid 2 and the x-mid 2 pro. As far as I can tell, tarptent has the lightest double walled 2-person tent. But their pitch is really awkward and troublesome. You are so close to making the perfect tent for me!

@amythinks
@amythinks Жыл бұрын
@@dgriffo1369 That's a good point. But honestly, cost-of-materials is like the smallest factor in price. Design hours, marketing, paying human beings for their time is the true cost. But as it is Dyneema, sellers definitely try to capitalize on mark ups.
@0verfiend
@0verfiend Жыл бұрын
Well if it’s a double wall, he could just offer each part in multiple fabrics, maybe even with the ability to buy them in parts or modular. I mean hypothetically. I know it’s not realistic. But maybe some combination or modular options will be in the future. Like a mesh inner and dyneema outer. Or dyneema both. Or polyester or nylon outer wi5 dyneema floor, or vice versa. Or maybe even just to replace stuff that’s damaged without having to buy an entire package. Anyway looks like they are all selling well, so I’m sure we will see something new, whatever it is. Great work.
@amythinks
@amythinks Жыл бұрын
@@0verfiend The appeal of something like this is the light-weight aspect. If it's not full Dyneema, it loses its marketing punch. Also, I don't think Dursten is the kind of company to keep lots of skus. They're going to do a few things really well. Too many options are really hard on small companies. Personally, I wouldn't buy it unless it were full Dyneema. And if we're talking just materials cost, while Dyneema is expensive, it's not going to be the lion-share of the cost. The cost of doing business is much more than materials.

Thanks for the comments. We recommend the X-Mid Pro 2 up to 6'4" when used with two people but with a solo occupant it does work for a much taller person. The parallelogram shaped floor gives one diagonal that is very long - moreso than almost any other tent - so we recommend it up to about 7'0" with a solo occupant.

I have a duplex and have been waiting for this thinking I’d make the change, but there’s no way. A nylon floor at that price? No. And now I have to carry a ground cloth when I don’t with my duplex. The floor misses the mark and ruins the tent, especially for the cost.
@durstongear
@durstongear 2 жыл бұрын
@@andilowry5784 The 15D nylon floor is at least as durable as the 1.0oz floor in your Duplex. That 1.0oz DCF is very strong, but definitely more prone to abrasion and punctures than a 15D nylon, and those are the main stresses on a floor. The key advantage of the woven floor is a way smaller packed size. The Duplex is literally 50% more bulky (500 cu in vs 340) because of that floor which doesn't even improve durability. Also while DCF is super waterproof, it does form microholes from abrasions, so the the nylon is more waterproof overall. So you're basically getting a more durable, more waterproof, and more compact floor. As for the cost, yes nylon saves cost but other aspects of this add cost so it's not a cheaper to make tent than the Duplex. The Duplex is sewn construction which is way cheaper and less good than hot bonding, and it is a smaller tent so it has less DCF.

Ideas for improvements // Maybe Dan will see it :) 1) Higher bathtub walls and/or to continue into a thin solid side wall panel for around a feet of hight, so less wind will blow inside. 2) A small piece of fabric to cover a bit and protect the bottom end of the outer zippers, so it does not get damaged by abrasion from the ground. 3) A small loop from elastic or solid cord attached to each of both peaks and hanging to inside so a longer cord can be attached between them to hang small pieces of equipment under the roof, like a headlamp, shirt or socks to dry etc. A quick solution would be to stick on the inside side of the peaks patches with small loops like those Zpacks is selling.
@durstongear
@durstongear Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. 1)With the X-Mid Pro 2 the fly comes lower to the ground than most tents so it already blocks wind better. Most tents have a higher bathtub also a much bigger gap below the fly. By making the fly come lower it shelters the vestibules more and already does a good job blocking wind. 2) We have never seen abrasion on the bottom of the zipper in any of our tents. I don't think there is a problem to fix here. 3) Yes we could add a hang loop. We have these in our other tent models. The Pro is lighter so it doesn't have as many features, but we might add these - although most people don't want them so it is lighter to just add the stick on ones if people want them.

The inner tent is fully mosquito and insect proof. It is a hybrid or 'singlewall' construction where there is a floor and mesh walls that are sewn to the fly, so there are mesh walls on the sides but only the single fly wall on the ends and roof. So there are no mesh walls in some areas, but it is fully connected and mosquito proof.

@durstongear

There are a range of tricks. You can get platform specific stakes that slot into the gaps between boards, or you can droop the cord between the slats and stab in a stake from underneath, or stake off the edge with longer cords, or tie to the ends of the boards. It is more complicated than nice dirt but is quite doable with a bit of extra cord and thoughtful technique.

Why changed the zipper to #3 instead of #5 in regular x-mid ?
@durstongear
@durstongear 2 жыл бұрын
Most tent companies use #3 for even heavier tents. We use #5 on our regular tents to be a bit tougher, but #3 also works well. A #5 is just too heavy to be the best choice for a super ultralight tent.

Thanks Jason. A few other companies have tried it (Gossamer Gear, Tarptent) with DCF tents, but a lot of people want a DCF floor even if it doesn't really make sense (shorter life and more bulky for similar weight). We'll see how it goes. I hope I can educate people on it but it is more work to explain it.

Yes. The material is basically a fancy plastic so it's 100% waterproof. The Pro will go on sale Aug 22 and ship a week later. We'll have the regular ones on sale mid-Sept but not shipping til Oct/Nov. The main differences are that the DCF fabric is a lot more expensive but lighter in the Pro and we've done some other things to save weight (most notably it's a hybrid/singlewall). So it's about half the weight but more expensive and not modular.

Hey Dan, great tent! Quick question: are there any interior pockets in the pro? Picture 10 on the website seems to show one by the door, but it is absent from the other pictures and from the video. Was the tent on pic 10 just a prototype then? Are there any other accessories, like maybe a hook or a loop in the ceiling? Thanks!

Thanks! There's not pockets - that was a prototype in that one pic. .There is space in the two deeper corners to put gear, and you set gear on the mesh 'shelf' at the ends, like a headlamp, which is out of the way and easy to find so that sorta works like a pocket.

Looks good, but not being able to fit two wide pads is a deal breaker for a 2P tent. At 48'' width you'd probably need to stuff them head to toe, which is a weird way to sleep. Still a great 1P tent, I guess
@durstongear
@durstongear 2 жыл бұрын
If you have a look at our FAQ, I explain how this does fit two wide pads, provided they are the tapered kind (e.g. Thermarest, Exped) and not rectangular. Most wide pads are really closer to 24" when inflated even though they spec'd at 25", and the width of the floor is flexible and can expand out to 50". We don't recommend wide rectangular pads because the small struts at the corners mean it's not great to expand it out to 50" right at the ends, but for tapered wide pads where it's only a combined 50" for a short stretch it does work pretty well. Also most couples don't use two wide pads. Regular pads are lot more common and then quite a few couples do use one wide and one regular, but couples use two wide is a fairly small minority. So by fitting two wide tapered pads this will work for almost everyone.
@_GntlStone_
@_GntlStone_ Жыл бұрын
I think the only possible improvement, and its super minor, would be to add those reinforcing buckles as on the X-Mid 2 Solid. The tension on the bottom of buckles has always been a point of failure on my old tents and I was super happy to see you implement a solution on the Solid. I'm not sure how many grams it world add, or if you can find a ul version, but something to consider for Pro2 v2. In the meantime I'll be ordering a X-Mid 2 Solid, Stargazer kit, ground sheet and a Kakwa 55, since this is my first foray into hiking weight gear vs car camping. I love your principles of design, use of space and utility, as well as your cost consciousness. Questio: I'm wondering if the X-Mid 2 Pro groundsheet is the same dimensionally as the standard Mid 2, and if so is there and advantage to the Pro over the standard?
@durstongear
@durstongear Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughts and kind words. The Pro 2 groundsheet is a few inches narrower than the standard 2P groundsheet. They are identical except the Pro 2 is a bit narrower and doesn't have cords at the corners so it clips to the floor instead of the fly corners.

Do you think the new Ecopak EPL line of fabrics will eventually replace the Dyneema? It's very slightly heavier but far more resistant and recycled material to boot.
@durstongear
@durstongear 2 жыл бұрын
Woven dyneema (aka UHWMPE) is the best fiber we have, but the challenge is getting that woven at the appropriate weights. With the EPL/Ultra line, Challenge has delivered a woven UHMWPE fabric that is better for packs than hybrid-DCF because the Ultra fabrics are woven UHMWPE whereas hybrid DCF is mostly just polyester (the face fabric) with a bit of non-woven UHMWPE underneath that isn't doing much. So yes for packs Ultra/EPL is a major improvement (although pricey). For tents, it has a long way to go because 100-200D Ultra is way too heavy. It weighs about 6x what DCF does, so Ultra isn't suitable for lightweight tents. DCF as a composite material (strands of dyneema inside mylar) is way better as things stand today. If someone were to create a woven UHMWPE at a very light weight (e.g. 5D) it could be even better, but I'm told that's not going to happen anytime soon because the only stuff that exists now is medical grade that would be 10x the price of DCF (which is already super expensive) so you'd be looking at $5000 tent. So yeah I'd love a woven UHMWPE at a suitable weight for tents but I'm not optimistic we'll see it soon.

It would be good to have some footage like this. The DCF that we use for the tent fabric is essentially a fancy plastic, so it is extremely waterproof and has a good reputation as such (it has been widely used in tents for about 10 years now). For wind, the tent is very good because it uses strong fabric and has a design without flat walls, plus many optional additional guyout points (e.g. peak, sides, extra stakes around the bottom). I don't have good footage at present but it does do very well.

Dan, for this version would you recommend 4 full size ground hogs for the corners and 4 mini ground hogs for the additional points as and when required - or would you suggest the mini's aren't strong enough for this use case?
@durstongear
@durstongear 2 жыл бұрын
4 of the full size ground hogs would be solid for the 4 corners but often you'd be able to get away with something lighter like the mini's for the 4 corners. A setup like 4 regular and 2 mini (for the doors) would be a good setup for most conditions. In nicer conditions you could do all mini's, whereas it severe conditions you may prefer 6-10 regular ones.
