As much as everyone says RL is dead and act like they don't care, they care when you play RL stuff in EDH. They get real mad when they start adding up all those collector boxes and precons they bought that could have been duals, diamonds, cradles, wheels, etc. 😂 It's about priorities. Most players could own RL but it would take some self reflection and patience and the ability to not engage with every single new product.

I buy a collector box or two when a new set comes out that excites me. If I want to play, I'll just use a friend's commander deck or we'll draft or play cube Most recently I got 2 Bloomburrow and I'm happy I did, it's a set that I can enjoy the concept of. Eventually I'll sell it for a profit, whether that's 5 or 10 years.

I maybe mis quoting but I think you mentioned that a magic player peaks out at age 40 and magic is 31 years old, that means if you played in middle school, high school or college when the vintage cards were coming out you probably peaked out now. I feel the same is happening with Pokémon. The next generations sets they played with should take over because those have more nostalgia than with older sets they didn’t play with.

The real number is 50-55. The issue is that people in this range or 5-10 years younger aren't as gullible as younger players. They recognize opportunity is coming and that buying vintage is stupid at current prices. Bidenomics is b.s. and since the 45-55 age range has more money than the average population? They'll wait until this dead cat stops bouncing. At least, that's what I'm seeing. If they're smart, they'll sell and buy back at half price at some point over the next 5 years. All prices will go to crap when it the planned failure of our lifetime makes its way through the world. At that time, no one knows what the world will look like, I hope y'all are praying. Unfortunately, lacking religion is the reason the constitution of the u.s. doesn't matter to our government. But hey, at least we have mtg, right!?

"Modern magic" will become in some years an "old magic" too. But the difference with the oldest magic is that it was overprinted to death. Nobody will have problem to get these 2005-2025 overprinted cards, so the price will tank. And newer sets will have cards, power creeps, that will kill the 2005-2025 frametime. thousands of unopened booster collector box sleeping hoping one time some people will buy whereas the market is already flooded withe the singles. "old magic" will survice because of its rarity and because it was the firts cards printed.

I don't actually believe Vintage is the weakest piece of Magic's market - Vintage remains to this day the era people think of when they think of 'value' and 'safe haven', even if that isn't necessarily the case. I remain extremely bullish on Vintage magic, especially the reserved list, _especially_ the bad reserved list cards. In contrast - too many post-2008 sets are just too prone to reprints and meta warping, containing cards that can be devalued in a second with a new secret lair or masters set. If you were to ask me what era of MTG I'm most bearish on, it's the 8th Edition to OG Innistrad time period, which just keeps getting hammered.

Sorry I disagree. Fully disagree too. MTG 30th scared people of a RL break. But it never broke and it won't break. So the fear is wrong. People are getting crushed with inflation and cost of living right now. Yes some people are selling vintage, but people are also still buying that vintage (otherwise you would see a growing supply.) This is not a collapse, it's a consolidation phase from the weaker hands to the stronger hands who are happy to buy those old cards at good prices. The PROOF of me being wrong would be a massive build up of old cards. It's literally not there. Also... Vintage Magic is not weak... you are not seeing the sales because it's not happening on TCG Player, Ebay, and Card Kingdom very much. It's happening person to person in private groups. You are making a huge incorrect assumption. Again... the proof would be a growing supply of old cards. Which is literally visably not there.

People are skipping all of that nonsense and selling direct to each other at closer to market prices.

@EdwintheMagicEngineer Ай бұрын
@@nikkeiputter Yep, exactly. People are getting crushed with inflation and those who are not already rich with some of those spendy RL cards are very pressured to sell. If that were not the case, you would see a massive build up of supply with no buyers.

Vintage is Dying because all the cards are flowing to people looking to stock pile them for the investment. I once had a massive collection of old vintage, I was the highest rated Legacy player in my state, I would travel to GP's, etc. I sold it all and won't look back. I'm old enough to where I'm not looking to sink more money than I got out with, to play a game I won't really have the time for. My power nine sat on a shelf. I once took my Black lotus sleeved it up and put it in a Jello Mold and brought it to the card shop. Vintage is too expensive for the people still playing magic, and if you do get it, you have no one to play with. If I do ever pick it back up, I'll just buy counterfeit like most people and play with friends.
@ikhbjhbkm5
@ikhbjhbkm5 Ай бұрын
Then you should be old enough to know that... Your post here could have been written in 2024 or 1998. Your EXACT same sentiment has always existed. What makes you think you are correct when everyone else was so wrong for so long? The thing is almost the same percentage of persons will call a collectable card unaffordable whether it's $100 or $10,000. "Vintage is too expensive" Give me a break.
@SinisterMe
@SinisterMe Ай бұрын
 Because why pay thousands for something you could get for a few bucks? High Quality proxies didn't exist in 1994. A Black Lotus couldn't buy you a Lambo in 1994. it wasn't worth it to make the proxies. The machines cost thousands, now it's cheaper to buy the machine to make the Black Lotus. Collecting was only half the market, the game was the larger part. and if people can't afford the game the collectors are the only one's left. The collectors have spoken, they would rather collect other high value items. Like Lambo's or boats. Most of the people I know that have the money to play vintage, don't they spend that money on nice vacations, cars, boats, businesses, women, etc. The old men that played magic are moving on, finally growing up. Getting laid.
@EdwintheMagicEngineer
@EdwintheMagicEngineer Ай бұрын
Although Rudy is wrong on this video premise (it's not a Vintage collapse, it's a consolidation phase where the cards flow to stronger hands) What you said here is correct. Those old cards are in fact turning into investment assets and not being played with. HOWEVER... there seems to be a growing support of old formats using proxies. I'm very happy to see that because it opens the door for people to play those old formats and cards.
@SinisterMe
@SinisterMe Ай бұрын
@@EdwintheMagicEngineer Because the official company doesn't support those formats, and can't, because they have no way to generate new supply if they build demand. So 3rd parties that don't require official WoTC product, because if you're goal is to make money on entry fee's why would you limit players. What you call a consolidation phase, I can see some what see from investor graph logic point. But the reality is official product priced it's self out of the market. A new market has formed. Where once talking of Proxies was taboo, we now openly do it. For every market a sub market grows. This sub market is where I feel the money in vintage is flowing. For every proxy produced one can argue the value of real cards drop. This is why I would argue I don't feel it is as much a consolidation phase, as a next leg in a bubble. Same thing happened with comics, and baseball cards.
@EdwintheMagicEngineer
@EdwintheMagicEngineer Ай бұрын
@@SinisterMe You cannot have a collapse without a growing supply and no buyers. Period. Prices can walk up or down... but the 99% of those cards are NOT for sale and thinking you know market prices from 0.1% of the sale data means you don't understand markets. The 99% supply determines the market, not the 0.1% Those cards exploded in price since 2016 completely without WoTC support of any kind. WoTC supported formats is not what made them grow, or what hit their price now.

If you are buying right now to "invest" then you are going to lose. Buy to play, buy because you like the cards. If you are looking to invest in something... find something else to buy.

Personally, I love vintage magic but it seems so risky because of authentication. How can I know that a sealed box is legit? There are some tips, sure, but there’s just so much to learn and watch out for. And you could make a mistake that costs thousands. Meanwhile modern collector boxes are getting shipped to me from reputable stores with more assurance that I’m getting factory sealed product, and there’s a ton of evidence that the collector boxes go up in value. Seems safer imo, but hey I’m new to the Antiquities and Collectibles markets

You're probably correct that newer players don't care about the vintage cards, but back in the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s (before the reprint), players who came in at those times wouldn't care about vintage cards either, but that didn't prevent vintage cards from setting new record highs in pricings. MTG came out in the 90s, so most folks who experienced vintage MTG are still around, most are in the late 30s-50s, so the simple reason why Vintage cards aren't doing so well is because Wotc pissed off the vintage collectors and many mtg collectors, both old and young, are impressed with the artificial scarcity of the numbered cards because of their inexperience in collecting numbered cards.

People from the 90’ are getting old, the sentimental feeling and nostalgia will eventually end. That’s happened with other stuff as well. New magic is the New hype

@@peterUSA-m7v New Magic isn't Magic at all. It's just a mashup of different IPs bearing the name of an once great game. In my opinion, Old School and Premodern are the best ways to play the game right now.

@@peterUSA-m7v You do understand that most of those people are around late 30s-50s, the prime age for nostalgia? It may end some time, but not anytime soon, if Wotc didn't pissed them off? Which other hobbies are you seeing that has 90s nostalgic stuff losing demand? 90s basketball inserts and parallel cards are as hot as ever, 90s arcades, console games are hot, etc.

@@mannyk1986 @Izelor, I agree with you all however we need to leave love outside business. MTG is not like coins, art or weapons, it is totally dependent on nostalgia. People is getting old and letting go. Dont have true value

I agree. It's overreaction to say 30-50th years old people are so old they will be out soon. Only few have retired and once retired individuals might have lots of time to chase they are missing. However it's possible we have seen pinnacle in prices.

That stack of metal workers looked to he approximately 400 cards. Just a guess. Looked it up on TCG and it is 72 for a metal worker. 400 x 72 = $28,800. Rudy leaves a stack of 30k dollars on his desk for the lulz

I love this channel but I wish, just once, Rudy would acknowledge how absolutely atrocious WOTC continues to treat the game, almost as if they want it to fail. I feel like even in light of the Mana Crypt/Lotus bans, he'll probably say that MTG is still doing fine and to stay the course and don't overreact, etc..... But things really ARE that bad 😢

Rudy, can you please correct me if I'm wrong about the new ban list; wotc got their reprint value out of crypt, Lotus and dockside and those cards can't be reasonably power crept out of existence so the ban them so people will chase new legal cards. But doesn't this just kill brand reliability?
