The conductor oscillating between professional and panicked. That's how I experience panic attacks and sometimes PTSD. Coincidentally, if injured enough I respond to the pain in a similar way if I'm struggling with it. I've spent much of my adulthood responsible for others, so I've had the prerogative to remain strong in all situations, even if panic reduces me to mentally reciting strategy game counters while my kid is in the E R.

On the blind character many people are legally blind but not fully blind where they can see shapes, outlines, colors, etc often just in a pinhole or reduced capacity.
@KaylaTsukinochan6 күн бұрын
As a totally blind woman, myself, that's correct. Doctors use a number scale to determine how blind a person is. 2020 is perfect vision. As I've stated, I am considered totally blind, because my vision is offf the scale but I still have light and some color perception. I also have some distance too. So one theory is he can see some. But, sound also can determine size. How Harold was moving on the pole with how in close proximity he was.

Hey Shawn, at 6:24 You were wondering how the blind Man could tell Harold was fat. As someone who is completely blind Myself allow Me to explain a bit. Different amounts of weight effect not only the throat and the way it presses on the vocal cords, but also the accuracy of the formation of the lips and cheeks when speaking. I have been blind for 19 years, and I can tell when someone is significantly over or under weight by listening to Their voices. 9 out of 10 times I'm correct. My best guess is the Man was able to tell using a similar technique. Hope this helps! And before anyone else asks, I'm a screen reader User, and that's what I used to post this comment. 5:37 This part is really interesting to me. To explain, I lost my sight when I was ten years old, which was in 1997, meaning I've been blind for 27 years. Despite this long amount of time, I can still remember vividly the cartoons I watched back then, including Hey Arnold. I remember this episode well, as it was always one of my favourites, the story just stuck with me. Everything about it is just perfect. The music, the claustrophobic atmosphere, the crazy characters featured in it, and of course the story. As for the question raised here, if we take into consideration the fact that the blind man may travel a lot via subway, he would know the layout of the cars, including the general location of the grab pole for passengers to hold on to. Secondly, Harold himself says "I'm an upside-down fireman" indicating he was climbing on something, this and the blind man's knowledge of the subway car's layout could be enough for him to put 2 and 2 together to determine Harold is improperly using the grab pole. As for the question about knowing Harold's weight, I grant you, this is harder, though the sound of Harold's voice may give him a clue? Though I'll admit I may be reaching on that one. I also love the voice acting, from the claustrophobic woman working through her mantra before switching places with her suddenly panicking therapist, (voice acted by the legend Tony Jay), to the subway conductor who is brilliantly voice acted by Dan Castellaneta. Everything about this episode is just so memorable and I can still remember it as if I watched it yesterday. Shawn, once again love your content my guy, your dark side of Hey Arnold is amazing, and I'd love to hear your review of the episode Weezin Ed! That episode always freaked me out, specially at the end where you see his ghost weeze-laughing on Elk Island as they row away!

On why they were so far from home a quick explanation is that that movie was only played in a few select locations. It's actually relatively common for a movie to be played in a single location in a whole region, especially if it's a non Hollywood or arthouse production as the big production companies in Hollywood go to good lengths to throttle any competition in the cradle. Based on how disappointed the kids were when they came out of the movie theater, I would surmise that they had rather high hopes for it, so maybe they had learned of this film and that this one location was the only place in the city that played it.
@smassiha78817 күн бұрын
I can see them going to a theater far away if they were trying to see an R movie. Theaters near their home could recognize them thus risking getting into trouble with adults. And it makes sense that a kid would be afraid of the subway. As an adult, you just put your earbuds in and avoid eye contact and you’re good.

I have family in NYC and I've been on that subway. I can't even imagine being stuck on that. Somebody got hit by a freight train (iirc) on our train line. We were delayed for about an hour or so. Then there were several freight trains on the line so our train had to move very slowly. I'll be honest here, I actually sympathize with everyone in this situation, even the conductor and mental health professional. The truth is, when you're stuck in a situation you believe to be hopeless, your brain freaks out. Human instinct tells us to survive, that's how our minds are wired, but when there's something threatening that survival that seems impossible to get around, our minds can start switching from calm and collected to extremely frightened and panicked. That's most likely why these two people acted so unprofessionally. In their minds, they believed this might have been the end for them, so, as said before, their minds started going crazy and it caused them to say things they probably wouldn't have said otherwise.

In my area, there is a Regal theater and an AMC; back in the 90s and early 2000s they would sometimes split which movies they would show so the audience could only see Movie-X at Regal and Movie-Y at AMC. Maybe the movie they wanted to see was at that theater, they took the bus planning on taking it back, but the movie ran long and now they're stuck. Keep in mind that these are also children and even if the theater is only 5-10 miles away from Arnold's house, that could still take hours to walk even without Harold slowing them down. As far as the blind man being able to tell Harold was fat, he probably knows Harold is a kid by the way he sounds and can most likely feel the heavier vibrations when he walks.

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is a genetic disability that makes the collagen (the thing that makes your skin stretch) faulty. It makes our ligaments and tendons too stretchy to hold our joints in place, meaning they dislocate extremely easily. It also gives us gastric, bowel, heart, and other organ issues, aswell as constant pain in any area of the body (mostly joints) that mean we can't walk far, and we are in agony when we try to exercise, and we break bones more easily too (I fell 6 inches to the ground and shattered my elbow into 5 pieces because it makes our joints overextend).

The emergency brake wouldn't be that violent outright. But, it does have to be quick enough to avoid potential collisions, and would happen with minimal warning. So it would likely feel as it's demonstrated. Which is something "Hey Arnold" does well: making us feel what the characters are feeling, conveying the sense of the experiences as Arnold and his friends are experiencing them. ----- And Arnold's grandma should have been dead fifty times over before this episode even aired... she's frickin' insane!

The conductor kind of reminds me of a dark comedy comic. I might draw someday. The scene opens up on an airplane mid flight. The pilot starts at the PA system. Panel one : attention everyone this is your pilot speaking we’re all going to die! Panel two : panicking passengers Panel three : someday but this plane is gonna arrive early and have a smooth uneventful flight.

Shawn me and only a few other people are the only ones I know to mention grandmas odd behavior . Like Arnold is like oh yeah grandma gets like that sometimes but I’m like is this not her being senile or manipulative because on serious moments she tends to drop the crazy enthusiastic bit so it could be for her own amusement.

30:43 theres a very later episode where grandma becomes a film noir style dectective (with arnold) to recover grandpa’s stolen packard. In the end you hear arnold’s thoughts “i wonder what its like to have normal grandparents?”. Arnold loves them but they can be overwelming for him too

17:16 hehe, as somebody who ended in similar situation back in the 90s, in a big city like Arnold's is because the bus just works until a certain time, so to me it wasn't strange that you arrive early by riding the bus to a place in the city far, far from home because near where I lived there where no other cinemas (in fact, for a big city like mine, there was only one back then) and once you got out of the movies, you realized it was so late for the bus as it was only avalaible until 7:00 PM and the movie ended at 8:00 PM, so to me, Arnold's situation wasn't so weird, for the contrary, it was quite relatable XD And since they were all kids, I wouldn't be surprised they simply didn't prevent about their way back home out of immaturity. Also, yeah, the subway was seen as dangerous and creepy, but as much as in Arnold's city, as it looks way dirtier and older than the ones where I grew up, the detail of having a vagabond living in there was another reason of why maybe the subway was considered unsafe by the kids. (no surprise we never see them using it again) And maybe Arnold just didn't considered, since he's a kid, how dangerous the subway was.

Hey Arnold was such an anomaly. There aren't many kids shows that are grounded in reality like this. And most shows are set in suburbs or rural communities. This is the only show I can think of about inner City children.

I heard the blind man and immediately remembered him. As for Harold being big, he could likely hear the weight on the poles, and he sounded like a kid.

One of my fav episode of Hey Arnold. Probely it becuase how it one of senario that you never see in cartoon before. Arnold and his friends are having another kid adventure only to un-predictly stuck in the subway. It really rare for a show have a senario that take place in a subway since trains are like an underrated transportation for western people. Better then trap in elevator, i'm right?

i don't think they could connect to the train because the power went off and there was no phone signal so they had to try and locate the train first to come up with their solution on getting people out..

Hey awesome video my friend. In response to the underground subway stopping abruptly. I had experience when trains stopped very abruptly when the emergency brakes activating. It usually depends on the speed on the train. It seems like the train had to do about over 35 mph. As a New Yorker we rely on the subway to get around. But overall I've been waiting for someone to make a video about this episode as I still watch to this day.

I remember this episode vividly because something like this happened when I was 6 riding the BART trains (I live in Oakland) with my dad, it stopped and was stuck for about 20 minutes due the electric rails in one of the tunnels losing power which made me freak out if the train behind us would ram us, of course that didn't happen this eipisode perfect captured how something like this is stressful for both kid and adult On another note ,gotta say I'm surprised Gertie's "Rambo" outfit wasn't an alt in NASB2 would of fit better then the blue dress with the chef hat alt imho
