Really like your control of the skew I like using it but I don't have that kind of control. For dust collection I also use an air cleaner that gets turned on when I enter the shop. For fine sanding dust I use a shop vac with a HEPA filter and a dust deputy cyclone ahead of it. Since most of my work is small bowls, pens, bird house ornaments etc. I can position the inlet a half inch or less from where I am sanding and can see the stream of dust being sucked away. Considering what I am turning I don't know why I bought a lathe with a 5 ft. bed but like other things better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Take care and God bless.

I'm not so interested in the dust collector as I am mesmerized how you work that skew.I tried it a few times and scared me to near death. You make it look so easy. I'm scratching my head. Really entertaining. Thanks

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. :) I've had years and years of practice with a skew. Keep at it. I started just like you. Pay attention to the edge and put as little of it on the wood as you can.

Nice work John. It seems the dust war never ends does it lol... Great video.

I collect dust from every direction, and it still gets all over everything. :)

A brilliant solution John - like the band saw blade rack too :). I have to admit that if it works it's good enough ethic, is mine too, I have many "prototype" jigs etc, that I was going to build again to look better...but never have as they work fine as they are. great video mate. Take care Mike

The spinning chuck jaws act as the blades in a centrifugal fan throwing air outwards and pulling in in towards the centre. Hence the draft when in the chuck but not when between centres.

Nice little set you have John! and watching you use the skew was a treat ,don't really see it being used on the videos I watch " I should get out more often lol" According to my wife my overalls are good dust and chip collectors, when I come in from the shed she usually says "look at all that saw dust you are bringing into the house lol .... she is ok really. Cheers for now Bram

Thanks, Bram. My wife says the same thing. Usually while she's picking chips out of my beard. :)

You seem to have mastered the skew...I hate mine and I'm convinced it hates me too. it's nice to know they can eventually be tamed.

I need some kind of dust collection. Right now I am just using a fan with open windows, and the draft in my small shop. It is a problem, to say the least being a cancer survivor. Not whining, just stating a fact as a fellow turner. I have got to figure out how to cobble something to keep the sanding dust down. Good ideas John, and good work also. By the way, I was trying to get a better look at the Evo early '90s?. I surf around on Facebook (woodchuckers) and the dust collection problem is an expensive issue (sadly) for all of us. God bless you pal... Kent

I've tried the box fan + furnace filter and could not get it to work (no airflow). But others have said it worked for them.

Hi John, I can't remember a video of someone using the Skew without getting a catch! No wonder it's your favourite tool, you don't need any other! A good solution to the sanding dust too, something that I have problems with. I'm going to give the bandana mask a try to, I have a beard nothing like yours mine is about 4" long and I've tried loads of dust masks but the beard gets in the way! I'll just have to remember to take it off before I go to the Post Office lol. Thanks for sharing your handy video. Cheers Andy

Bandanas definitely cause trouble outside the shop. :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Roundabout Woodworks Yes, I prefer to watch video's that doesn't give anything away about the subject until the end! It adds to all the excitement... you can say that I'm weird if you want lol.

Thanks for the great video! I got some inspiration from you. I don't think there is a 100% solution to lathe dust control. But, if I can try to catch 70% of it, I'll be doing good. I have some ideas I'm working on for small projects. Big projects? that seems impossible. But, maybe someday . . . Thanks!

John, sand at a lower speed:
@RoundaboutWoodworks18 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion. I do sand bowls at a lower speed but my spindle work habits are such that I sand in sections, and changing speeds is more trouble than I want to go to. I use danish oil as a finish these days so I can't contaminate the surface.

How come no new wood turning videos for over a year now
@hubiehubco24008 жыл бұрын
if you have time and you want to see if this might work for you, check out on you tube a guy by the name robo hippy. he is a production turner. the 4th video he made was a dust hood. I made one it works great for me. good luck''turn on''hubie
@RoundaboutWoodworks18 жыл бұрын
Thanks Hubie. I don't have room for a hood because of how my lights are mounted. My lathe backs up to a table saw and I can't even walk between them.
