My thoughts exactly! I too, am not in the budget to spend 1-2 G’s on a DC, and also have seen for years that at least the heart of the HF dc was a great value. I saved this video so that in the future, when i build this EXACT system, I can pull it back up lol

This is one of the first dust collection build videos that don't have me scratching my head at the decision making. Great video, nicely documented steps. I'm going to price these parts and watch this while I build it. Thanks for your efforts.

I've watched a lot of these kinds of 2-stage filter setup videos, and I liked yours best. Thank you for putting this together. I'm getting ready to copy your build almost exactly. Only thing I'm doing differently is using a clear bucket under the filter so I can see if there's anything dropping into the bucket. Probably not needed, but it'll keep me from constantly checking it. lol

A small safety item lower the blade guard/guide on your bandsaw for safety and better cuts. Using a translucent 55 gallon barrels let you see how much dust you have collected.

I bought the same dust collector and plan on upgrading it in a similar way. I'm starting to think we're not all that smart though. The cyclone and upgraded filter is around $500 in upgrades alone. $800 would probably buy a pretty decent name brand dust collector...lol
@andrewr2650
@andrewr2650 7 ай бұрын
Yes, you could buy something decent for that price (1.5HP singe stage with a MERV 15 filter). That will cover any tool that uses up to a single 4" dust port no problem. Primary downside to the single stage is needing to clean out the filter every time you generate a bag of sawdust and its really messy. To get into a 2HP 2 stage collector with the filter like he built in this video your $1500-$2000, so you are cutting costs about in half, plus you get to say you built it yourself

So you are now filtering down to 1 micron. Now only the most lung-damaging particles are escaping back into your work space. You need to be venting all the exhaust air, to the outside. The upside: no more 1 micron filter replacements (the 1 micron filter which isn't protecting you anyways). The downside: You will be heating or cooling a lot more incoming fresh air.
@eddiebob2408
@eddiebob2408 Жыл бұрын
I am thinking of doing a 'Thien' type system when I noticed the air filter looked a lot like the air filter that goes in the Freightliner's and Kenworth's that I used to drive! I think they are about 1 micron, which is still 'trouble'... I could probably spray a can of Endust into the filter and make it 1/2 micron...hmmm... There are filters on Amaz... that are $60! For instance, Wix 46883. $61 in Nov '22. 14"x25"...what's not to love? Has a chrome cap on it you can cut out with a jig saw metal blade,,and stack 2 of 'em up! Hell's bell's,,,at that price...buy 3 and stack them up! 6' high of air filters. Actually I'm going to vent mine outside, low to the ground. But if I were in a basement, etc, I'd do my build with some Big Truck air filters. You think those engines don't have great filtering? Best thing to do if you have a dust collection system is wear a 3M P-100 mask while you are sanding, etc., vent outside, and hope the little particles don't impede your health if you think any/all of these filters will do 100% of the job. A nice build, and thanks for posting it.

I brought home my new (used) 2 stage Jet with the canister filter and I sat for a day and a half wondering how I’m going to set my system up. I kid you not I was drawing out a wall mounted system almost identical to this and I was going to make some room in my 1 car shop tomorrow. You’re the first person I’ve come across that did it this way. I thought I was crazy but apparently it works great lol. Cheers

I tried the plywood disk and bucket with screw top Gama seal lid under the filter but found that dust just piles up on the plywood shelf. I went back to the plastic bag because it allows the dust to fall straight through unobstructed. Ya, that annoying bag and metal band actually work better. You will find out as you have to deal with trying to reach up and around the plywood shelf to vac it up. Unless your incredibly ambidextrous.

I've set up a woodworking shop and now have a clean slate, but I'm uncertain about what diameter pipe to opt for in my dust collection system. Currently, I'm equipped with a Harbor Freight 2HP setup, enhanced with upgraded fan blades and a P181038 filter, alongside the addition of the Oneida Cyclone, which I've wall-mounted. I've noticed many KZbin creators employing 4" pipes, while a few opt for 6". Could you shed some light on why you chose the size you did?"

Watched your video several times and keep coming back to it. My layout is almost exactly the same. One question - I’m having a problem finding a coupling to connect the HF Y-connector to the Cyclone - look like you have a short piece of pipe that goes inside the cyclone connector and inside the y-connector, but have not been able to find that in the big box store - they have 4 inch (too small) and 6 inch (too big). Closest I can find is a 4 x 4 CI Plastic to CI Plastic connector. Can you share what you used?

The $49 "Dust Stopper" from Home Despot and a 7+ gallon "6HP+" shop vac from Lowe's or Menard's or where ever you can get one under $100, does a better job in my tiny shop on the table saw or router table than a $3600 240 volt 3HP cyclone I was willed by a late friend. He had a semi-pro workshop and sold cedar chests in Branson, MO. His five-inch pipes just didn't work well with my 3" outlets. Moved TONS of air, but no suction.

The only question I have is you used 5" flanges on the bottom of your Dust Deputy and the top of your 55-gal bucket, but a 4" flex hose. @petem6503
@petem6503 Жыл бұрын
Just an observation (having trod this path myself). Everyone starts with a shop vac. Then they enhance the shop vac, usually with a separator (the slanted thing). Then they get an improved outlet filter. Then they get a small, roll-around dust collector. Then they get an improved outlet filter for the DC. If you are currently using a shop vac (enhanced or not), but not satisfied, I suggest you jump straight to the DC, and then call American Fabric Filter (or equal) to get a "1-micron rated outlet bag". You rob yourself of all the hours of fun playing with the hoses, but you get where you're going that much faster. Shop vacs do a decent job of keeping the floor from getting too deep, but they don't really do the job of a DC. [A shop vac has a higher pressure-to-flow ratio than most DC designs; a dust system benefits from a high flow at moderate pressure. A good outlet bag design {eg, make it bigger} won't penalize the fan with excess pressure loss.]

Great upgrade and great video and detail. I have been doing the same thing. I have everything except for the new large filter. Bloody things are pricey. Cheers

Did you use a 4", 5" or 6" flex duct between the barrel and the Dust Deputy? Where did you source the inlet flanges from?

I wonder if the bucket replacing the bag is actually necessary. In my experience, very little dust accumulates in ny similar bucket arrangement. Next time I may just leave it out and cover the ring with solid plywood.

i had a question is it ok to get a smaller filter for a 2hp dust collector like this one?i noticed in some videos theyre just as big as the ring it sits in and yours looked like it was a bit smaller in diameter. I guess ultimately the question is if its possible to get a smaller size canister filter, make it its own stand and not use the metal ring that came with the dust collector?

very cool, but i feel like the cost of all the upgrades and materials, you could have just bought a better collector system. im guilty of doing these things too

This is a great set-up and it will be nice when it's time to empty the sawdust. Your lungs will appreciate the upgrades you've made. Thanks for showing us your design and I will be using ideas from watching this video.
Is this the best upgrade for a single stage dust collector?
