I have used this procedure to equip a brand new MK7 with a hinge set for the MK5. I can confirm that this works very well and that the plastic body is sturdy enough to support the hinges and the dust cover. Great video!

Did you use the original MK7 dust cover that came with it? Its seems kinda small.

Just finished this. Works well. Thanks for the video. I would have been too scared to do this had I not come across this. A few things I'll add: 1. There is a recess in the inside of the bottom case for the metal backing plate to reside. This is presumably a remnant of the original design. The backing plate you find may be slightly larger than the recessed cutout. Mine were. You may need to grind off a few mm from each end of the backing plates. The screws that came with my hinge mounts were barely long enough, so the backing plate size was crucial. Even if your screws are long enough, it is helpful to have the backing plates fit perfectly within their internal recesses. The flatter the connection, the less likely for cracking, warping, etc. 2. The top of the case is slightly larger than the bottom. There is a slight overhang of about 1mm circumferentially. If you fully attach the hinge mounts and screw them down tightly, it may be difficult to attach the top case to the bottom when you're done, or it may slightly warp top or bottom, or leave a pressure point to crack. I screwed them in fairly loosely until putting everything together, then tightened the screws the rest of the way when the case is completely together. This is assuming the metal backing plate is threaded, as were mine. If your situation requires a bolt and nut (metal backing plate is not threaded), you'll have to tighten it down before putting the case together as per the video. In that case you may need to put it together a few times to determine if any slack is needed here.

Have the lid from the mk7 the same formfactor as the lid from the mk2?

Can you tell me where I can order the hinge kit?

I got mine all from ebay. You will need hinges (with screws), hinge mounts/sockets (the plastic pieces), and metal backing plates. I bought mine all separately as it's cheaper. Complete set is about $150-200 new, designed for mk2-mk5 and includes extra brackets that you won't need. Bought individually about $100. There is a used set on ebay now for $95 plus shipping. Good luck.

Other way is to find on web a specialized shop in spare parts or assistance, there is a good one in Holland that has a good stock

How is the lid holding up? Does it flex or bend the plastic base at all? Or is it solid?
@claudioc2742 жыл бұрын
i assesed the plastic base is hard enough to stop de screws and support the dust cover weight
