Hanover is another small Northern Cape town on the N1 we always drive past and never go in to explore. This time it was different and we loved what we saw. What a cute little place with such a wonderful history. It was established in 1854. One of the things I found very interesting was that the fountain which supplies the town with water has been flowing strong for many years and has not slowed down. Hanover is located exactly the same distance from Cape Town as from Johannesburg. Another interesting fact is that Olive Schreiner the famous South African author lived here with her husband from 1900 to 1907. It was really great driving through the streets and seeing the history. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #hanover #northerncape #capetown #johannesburg

Beautiful old towns in South Africa. Old style buildings are so special. Law buildings - police, magistrate are so neat. I have not noticed much vandalism and the streets are not full of litter. So lovely to see.

The buildings were really special to see. We always wonder if walls could talk, what amazing stories they'd be able to tell. 🏢 There is unfortunately a lot of litter in most of these small towns, but we choose not to focus on that. We do catch some of it in our shots though, that is unavoidable. 🗑️

Thank you so much, we're always happy to hear from someone who enjoys our travels AND our chatter! 😁 Because of the frequency of our travels, we have to work on a rough budget for every trip. We can count on one hand where we spent more than ZAR600 per night. And we never mention our KZbin channel, so there are no strings attached to us staying over at a particular establishment. This is one of the many reasons that the way that we travel, is accessible and possible for so many. 😎🚗

Sunday Coffee Good morning wowzer. Stunning town of Hanover. The history of Trappieskop is amazing. Then the Steeple of the Antenna to praise God . Then the Cool Police station next door the St Annes Church. Interested the find out why no steeple. All these little towns with their stoephuise. Definitely a place to stay over and hear the peace of the Karoo. Quick question what is the name of the book as your research is mainly sourced. Glad you found Olive Schreiner’s house - I rode around looking for it for about half an hour but with no luck. According to what I had read it was in Grace Street but I never found Grace Street. After seeing and visiting her houses in Cradock and Maatjiesfontein I really wanted to see this one. I also looked for signs of a spring that apparently produces a couple of hundred thousand litres of water a day but there was no sign of that. Maybe it was something to do with that place with the locked turnstiles (which I never saw either). I was there quite late in the afternoon as I had detoured to see the ruins at Deelfontein earlier that day. Keep up the videos, I love them.

Thank you, glad you enjoy our videos! ☺ We happened to read about Olive Schreiner's house before we arrived in Hanover and we looked for it specifically. I don't blame you for missing it, that can happen so easily and you probably drove right past it without realising it. We were also looking for the fountain, but couldn't find it either. I do agree with you and also feel that it could be in that fenced area with the immobilised turnstiles. I was actually quite keen to see it, but no luck this time around. I'm sure you enjoyed seeing the rest of the town though. It's always difficult when one arrives in a town late in the day and still have to push on to your overnight accommodation. We know all about that too! 😁

I have just read some fascinating information about Hanover such as the fountain that provides 200 000L of water per day and the 3 innocent men who were wrongly accused and found guilty for derailing a train and subsequently executed. The inscription on a pyramid erected over their graves reads"Vengence is mine, I will repay;saith the Lord" This perhaps the reason why Hanover is in its current condition. Fracking is the only solution to re-ignite (no pun intended) the ecomomies of these towns and of course our electricity crisis. 🙄 I too was an anti-fracker, however one cannot ignore realities.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
Extremely interesting info about the grave pyramid, which I didn't know about, and the fountain. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the fountain, but I suspect it's in a park in the centre of town which is fenced and the turnstiles have been immobilised, so it's currently a no-entry zone unfortunately. ⛔⛲ As far as fracking goes, this is me. 🤐

I could do that too, just staring out over the town and the beautiful landscape. 😍 That log house was something else, I loved it but haven't been able to find out any more info about it. In 1981, I ran out of petrol at night at Hanover, as I was a conscripted national serviceman. I did not have a permit to buy fuel after hours, but took a chance. The kind local police saw me there in my uniform and kindly decided not to check my papers. A narrow escape indeed, and that tank of petrol took me well past the Hex River Valley that night. Police kindness really helped me on my way.

What a special memory of Hanover, thank you for sharing that! 👍🏻👮🏻‍♂️ You may have been in a spot of bother had that policeman decided to make you wait until the morning. I haven't thought of those days when we needed a permit for night and weekend petrol in a long time! Wow, how time has flown!
