This is what driving was and is all about. You get in, turn the key, and have fun. A car with that kind of horsepower should and is fun to drive. With a car like that, the two things that are everybody's worry, gas prices and gas economy don't mean a damn thing! Love those REAL Darts.

Commuting is from point A to point B (home to work, work to grocery store, etc.). Driving, true driving is from point A to ? You, the car and the road (I prefer lonely highways at obscure hours for lack of traffic like highway 50 in Nevada or the road between Susanville and Red Bluff California at 2 in the morning).

Bought a 1970 duster factory 318 car in 1987. I live in Michigan but the car came from Oklahoma 4 months before I bought it. The car had absolutely no rust anywhere but the people that owned it before didn't drive very well. Every panel had minor dings and dents. I scavenged every junkyard within 150 miles away. Parts I was looking for were either gone or no better then on the car. I ended up getting both doors from from a scrap yard in my city. They sold parts at scrap value. I paid $8 a piece for the doors both mint. I wanted to change it over to a 4 speed manual so I looked for the next few years for a pets car to get all the parts I was going to need. I couldn't find a 70-71 parts car I ended up buying a 73 sport dart factory 340 car and removed what I thought all the parts I needed. But after I scrapped the car I found out I needed the floor extension for the manual shifter. In 96 I flew out to California to help my younger brother who was done with his 6 year enlistment in the navy drive a rental truck back home. We stopped in Phoenix Arizona at desert valley junkyard and I bought both front fenders, rear bumper and a grill. I pretty much haven't touched the car now since then. The car has been in the garage sense 89. I don't have the patience to do the work myself anymore and can't afford to pay what they get to restore cars today. It's a shame the car was 100% rust free when I bought it. But years of sitting around the passenger floor pan has some pin holes in it. The trunk floor needs replaced. They say sitting around doesn't hurt them I disagree.

Fun ride. Brings back some memories. I owned 5 different Dusters, years ago, one after another. Last was a '71 340 D21 B5 blue exterior and interior factory white stripes, factory tach and Tuff wheel (always figured a prior owner or the dealership added the tach and wheel as the fender tag was without those 2 codes). Back in the day, it wasn't all that hard to find parts in the wrecking yards. Of the 5 Dusters, 3 were '71 H code 340 cars. 2 of those being D21 4spd cars. Mine all had the standard bench front seats when I got them, but I would go hit the yards and get the correct high back A body seats and swap them in. I'd also often run the E body shorty pistol grip shifter handle or the '71 and up B-body bench seat pistol grip. Man I wish I had some of my old muscle cars back. The aftermarket support nowadays is awesome. Great car, thanks for uploading the footage.

Beautiful......back in 1995 I left Ft Lewis, WA for Columbus Ohio in my 73 340 4sp Duster. All by myself to travel home from ETS'ing from the Army. Mine was Orange/Black. 2,553 miles of Duster bliss. My first Duster (and first car) was a 1974 318 column auto in 1988-1989, then the orange 73 340 and now I have a restored 73 340 auto in the garage. I have a deep history with these cars. I wish they cost the same as they did in the 80's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😂😂

He might still be breaking the engine in if he didn't have it put on a Dyno to heat cycle the engine a few times then start the process of loading the engine to seat the rings and then Dyno tuning it for max power throughout the RPM range of the cam . Not everyone can afford to have a fresh rebuilt engine Dyno tuned because of money or they don't have a local Dyno shop nearby and don't want to haul the engine in the back of a trailer or truck hundreds of miles to have it Dyno tuned . I'm lucky because I have one less than 15 miles one way from my place and it's worth having done but its not cheap being most Dyno sessions for about 5 hours of Dyno time is roughly 350-400.00 and the more test and tuning to get absolutely the most power safely out of the engine takes more time and of course more money so if you end up doing 8 hours or more Dyno time you are looking at almost 1000.00 or more depending on how much the shop charges per hour because they supply the jets needed for your carburetor plus correct power valves etc to use and test with which they charge you for plus any performance mods done to the distributor advance curve and you also pay for your own fuel so it's not cheap but worth it because if there are any problems with the engine like oil leaks or something wrong with the engine it's much easier to find it on the Dyno first rather than putting the engine in the car to then find a leaking rear main seal or pan gasket valve covers or for some reason the guy who rebuilt the engine didn't pay attention to crank or rod bearing tolerances and it spins a bearing on start up or while being loaded up on RPM so it also saves you time not having to pull the engine back out of the vehicle if any of these problems arise while it's on the Dyno because they set the engine up on it which literally takes maybe 20 minuets to do . I was hoping he would get on it hard but if it's fresh rebuilt engine and hasn't had many heat cycles put through it or the rings loaded enough to seat them which also depends on what kind of rings were used it's not a good idea to be pushing RPMs hard until they seat in and that's another reason why it's better to have a fresh rebuilt engine Dyno tuned because they can tell from the first modest runs when the rings have seated as power starts to increase because of better ring seal to the cylinder walls and once that's done they see what power it makes and then make carburetor jets changes timing changes by reading the egt temps and how fat or lean the carburetor is and make adjustments until they get max power . Some times they even add a spacer to the intake or swap to a bigger or smaller CFM carburetor to see if it makes more or less power or even change headers that are bigger and flow more or by using a stepped header which is better for the street because they give you the best of both worlds of good low end torque and high end HP .

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spares will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called "Abgasbspaßung" :-((

This guy does exactly what I hate about most of these videos. He drives the car differently than he normally would if he didn't have the camera rolling. It gives the uninitiated (people that didn't grow up in our world) no real context of what really driving these cars day in and day out was like. I can just imagine the younger people thinking they just kept the throttle at 5000rpm all the time and never shift. It's not the way to show someone your crap. It's nice. The car is very nice but the video is not done nicely and it's all becasue of the camera. 340 was a damn good motor and Chrysler had the Direct Connection program setup with parts and no-how to get the cars to hook. It was a good deal for the street racer and drag racer alike and it came straight from the factory engineers.
