I was skipping ahead when I noticed the GoPro, You didn't say anything so I went back and then noticed your caption. A few seconds later there it was at 32:11. I've done a lot of underwater searching in various capacities. it's not possible to know which way your're going underwater. A fishing float attached to the ROV would help you to know where you are. A diver in black water will tend to swim in circles since one leg (fins) is always stronger than another. The first time I did some black water diving my instructor was laughing about my circles when I came out of the water. I didn't find anything that day. If you were to try again using the fishing float it would be good if you could attach a lead weight and release it where you find what you're looking for. Even if you'd found the Mavic and brought the ROV back to install your hook you might not have been able to get back to the location of the find in order to hook it. One last thing. When something goes into the water it will generally be withing a circle of three or four feet regardless of the final depth. I've had people come out in a boat with instructions to go to the exact place they'd been. Obviously they can't find the exact place without a GPS but their intuition will probably get them close to the point something had been lost. In my experience, well over forty years, I've had the most success knowing where something is by knowing the point at which it entered the water. My first time with SCUBA tank on my back was in 1958 when I was 12. In the mid 90s I became an instructor and got cave diver certified. I've worked with the police, recovering cars and raising sunken equipment. I'm 73 now and still climb radio towers professionally. My last dives to date were in 2013 in the Florida Keys. My business keeps me from traveling but I still fly airplanes. My tower channel is kzbin.info if you're interested. John

You can know where you are heading under water . Since the 90s there have been underwater dive compasses . Digital ones should not be as pricey today.

I lost a JYU Hornet and Runcam 2 due to my panic in resetting the "Home" location during a gust of wind. I searched trees in the neighborhood that blanket the area here in N. GA with my Phantom for many hours. As an afterthought I bought a locater, and RFID set thinking that would have helped me find it. 4 months later someone posted on our local "Neighbors" board a picture of the Hornet. It had been submerged in Lake Lanier for a few of those months. As the lake levels dropped in early summer it became visible, and that's when our good summation neighbor's boy found it on a hike. I don't think it would have helped with a locater being submerged. I replaced the $15.00 Body and it is still in service. I hope the same for your Mavic, but if not, look at the fun you have had looking for it! Great post!

Flew my mavic in to a waterfall a month ago and reached out to DJI, they responded right away and got all the info they needed and ended up sending me another one for free (It was on sport mode too.) If you haven't reached out to them yet I'd do that!
@DustinDunnill7 жыл бұрын
+BrendanMcMartin I'm glad you had a positive outcome Brendan. Unfortunately I did not. This Mavic drowned just prior to DJI updating to enable the pilot to throttle up to cancel landing. Ironically the DJI update was implemented a few days after the drowning about 6 months ago. I tried my hardest to plead my case but I must have got the wrong DJI customer service rep. They did not want to budge. I was pissed, especially after it was obvious the update was to solve the known "unable to cancel landing" issue which was why it drowned. The log they viewed even showed my full throttle up attempt a few seconds prior. I never believed the "DJI bad customer service" rumors until then 😡. Oh well.

I waited for what seemed like an eternity just to put a teaspoon of baking soda in it, run the tub full of water, watch it sink to the bottom and float back up to the top! Man, those were the days lol! Times have changed bud, times have changed. I think sea monkeys might have been next on the list. . . Much luck on your search and rescue endeavors!!

@billsomrak7 жыл бұрын
I thought you should have started at the waterfall, with the back of the Gladius back up against where the water was falling, and proceeded to sweep back and forth towards you. As I recall, the Mavic went in when its props hit the waterfall, so that would be a good spot to start from. Don't recall that you were carrying a GoPro when flying the Mavic .. that would be kind of redundant, since the Mavic is capable of 4K video. If this is freshwater, and you do find it, you may be able to revive it .. its only salt water that screws up everything. You were right .. pretty murky down there, with lots of sediment. Its going to be tough to find .. at best .. but I think its worth another shot, now that you have a bit of experience "on site". Don't often watch 40 min. KZbin videos, but this one was very compelling and interesting. Mahalo!
@DustinDunnill7 жыл бұрын
The mavic went down where I mentioned it did several times in the video, about 20 feet from the waterfall. The gopro was not mine but was spotted when reviewing and editing the onboard footage at home so it's still there at the pool underwater. I will go back for another shot and be a bit more methodical about a search pattern.

Dustin which underwater drone are you recommending? I thought I was going to get the PowerRay but the Gladius looks more stable and seems to have better footage. Your thoughts/recommendations?
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan. They're all fairly first generation at the moment and all have a wide variety of strengths and weaknesses. I can't recommend one that does everything perfect from what I've tested but I will say... the QySea Fifish P3 has the best camera and lighting and direct reliable cable connection but is the largest and heaviest of the bunch. The PowerRay has got the best software and finish/optional add-ons. These 2 having a single vertical motor suffer in stability but the P3 being heavier seems to be more stabilized. The Gladius is definitely the most maneuverable but since the verticle motors are more forward it's a different type of control than the others that have a centered verticle motor (a real bonus to have pitch capabilities but you can't get a smooth forward shot while keeping the sub still and ascending/descending). The subs that connect wirelessly seem to still have glitches (the PowerRay being the most stable wireless connection). So still room for improvement but you get what you pay for. Ultimately having more motors verically is the best for stabily and control but keeping the price down to compete with the others while still including awesome features will be challenging. The consumer sub market is ripe for potential ☺️👍

Thanks for the awesome reply! I know there is a number of these ROV's all hitting the market at the same time (and more on the way.) I have a freshwater reef filming project coming-up and have just been looking at the best option for getting those underwater shots. Did your Wifi issues with the Gladius get better? I'm wondering if these companies are going to keep up with FW updates to resolve many of the early bugs.

A V2 Gladius is arriving soon. Supposedly they've improved wifi connection, it now has a flat lens with filter hookup and a few more improvements.

Good attempt bro,plug up the water fall to stop the flow,lol.I think if the water was still it would of been a lot less murky that would of given you a better chance to recover it.I know this isn't the end I know you will eventually get it because you never give up.

Great video! Was very informative and entertaining to watch. Awesome. I noticed when I went back to watch your video of when the Mavic fell in the water, it looked like to me from the orientation of the angle of the camera footage it looked when the drone went into the water it appeared to hit the water a little "left" of center of the waterfall entry point. At least from the camera angle anyway. So maybe the next time you go out there to search, you might want to try searching a little more on the left side. But again, great video very awesome to watch. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Dustin, shame you didn't find your mavic, have you ever thought about getting a magnet they sell them on amazon and attach it to something, you could of got that gopro camera in your video, just a thought for you to try...great video as always glad to see there wasn't any crashing involved in this video, keep up the great work.

+RC Andy Great idea. It would have to be a high powered magnet and would need to be in camera view. You've got me thinking MacGyver style 👍

This was going to be my suggestion but wanted to go through the comments to see if someone suggested it. I used to be a seasonal ranger at a state park, and have used a magnet to retrieve things lost in the lake, or purposely thrown into liquid containers. I have had pretty good luck getting things back. I say liquid containers, because I responded on a man and woman arguing at one of our boat ramps. Turned out both were drunk, woman got pissed because her boyfriend was hitting on another woman on the boat, so she threw his car keys into a pit toilet vault. I went to my campsite, as we were camp hosts during the summer, and got my magnet, which is tied in a polymer rope 40 ft long. Took it back to the toilet, and found the keys within 10 mins. I made the couple clean my magnet and rope, then took it back to my campsite and put it in a tote, filled it with a gallon of bleach and then put water in until it covered the rope. By the time I did that, they had settled down and made up, and went back on the rope. Unfortunately, he didn’t listen to my warning not to drive until the next morning from the lake, and got arrested by the next shift.

How's it brah. Good interesting video. Kind of reminds me of watching the underwater scene of the Titanic movie. I just recently got onto the drone hobby. Got me the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. 👍 from Kaneohe Oahu. Windward side. Shoots.

Just curious I have the gladius advanced pro Bought it little over 2 years ago maybe But never had the chance to take it out Unboxed when received charged it up got it connected but just few days ago decided to get it out and had to reread the manual Freaked out after reading about storing ugh I don’t remember discharging “batts” ! I contacted Chasing Inn concerned of possibility of needing new batteries? They told me that model was out of production for a while !!! WTH !? So was curious if your gladius is still working fine ?

LOL I did the same thing man in 4 ft lake in Omaha, lost my Bebop 2 drone because I was at full speed and too close to the lake at a 45 degree angle forward, and I went home got the scuba gear and a mini SUB I had remote control, and knew right where it went down and still couldn't find it!! Water was same color GREEN!! Luckily Parrot called it a flyaway glitch and sent me a new one! But man I feel your pain..........good to see you thinking outside the box, I'm pretty sure from your vids that its still there maybe moved around but full of muck, as you said in this video love that Gladius, would be awesome in crystal waters........have a good one man talk to you soon.
