Once again blown away by your passion for movies, and your research. You do you homework, and it shows. And what a surprising, original topic for a video about the movies.

Well put. I am glad that someone goes on here to defend these award winners. I agree with everything you said. But I will be very glad if you could defend “The King’s Speech”.

Ooo that would be a good one! I'll keep that one in mind and maybe make this a series.

@@DustinReckling wow you are sooo fast! I’m looking forward to your other essays! However I have to say that by film quality standards “Raging Bull” is a better film.

THe way Beth says of the broken plate "I thnk it can be fixed' (or something like that!) is the Line of the Movie as it represents the fact that Beth tries to 'fix' everything so that its all back in order. Marys performance was against type, this was a master stroke of Redford to have Mary play the cold as custard role , as she was America';s Television Sweetheart. Criminal that Donald didnt get a Nomination

The film does not have a "downer" ending; in fact, it is an uplifting ending!

I get why people don’t love this based on the films it beat but this is my fave best picture. It feels nearly ageless and the message will live on through the amazing and layered performances that give the song a real emotional skeleton and hit. The depiction of the family s unfortunately very real especially nowadays even more than back then. It s a film that everybody should give a watch because it shows the horrible reality of living with a mental health and that you should always seek treatment for it. Such a masterpiece that just hits in all the right ways, it is a perfect film to me.

No need to defend this stone cold masterpiece. RAGING BULL isn't even close to being Scorsese's best film, let alone greater than OP. People get "confused" because RB is technically flashier. But the movie is hollow in its center.

What absolute tosh. 'The Elephant Man' accused of mawkishness and sentimentality. Strange how humaneness, empathy and the heartfelt can be rebranded by the cynical caustic souls of modern film critics. It and 'Ordinary People' are throwbacks to classical Hollywood cinema. The problem with 'Raging Bull' is that it doesn't have a soul - after two hours and with LaMotta and him smashing he head against a wall, it left me cold. This was a scripting problem and a directorial failure - Scorcese has always had an element that never translated 50% of the connecting and more human emotions. Directorial flair is easy, because that is his stock in trade.

Because of what happened to Sharon Tate I think that Tess would have won but Polanski had just let the country as a fugitive from the law for serious crimes. Hollywood does not like to reward really bad behavior. Image is everything. I was not very fond of Ordinary Picture... I mean People. IMO.
