Hi Dustin. Must confess one the better Intro vids for Power BI I've come across! Like your sample data and how you used it to it's full capacity. Worthwhile signing up to Opusdata to get that sample file. Thanks, keep up the good work!
@DustinRyan7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Leon. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've been toying with the idea of redoing the video with a more publically available dataset that I made available for download. I don't normally like to redo what I've already done, but I would if it was beneficial to the community. In your opinion, would that be worth the effort?
@leonmiles17057 жыл бұрын
Please REDO! Yes Dustin. Even if I now speak on behalf of the community. The DAX functions you've covered is interesting and fits in with the overall theme you had going there. Now that's what you call a proper Power BI Introduction. The visuals as well speaks to the data and represents it quite well. I'm looking forward to your next installment. THANK YOU for your dedication in contributing to the success of the Power BI Desktop app!

Thanks for the feedback, Leon. It's very helpful to me personally. Any suggestions for good datasets to use?
@leonmiles17057 жыл бұрын
I think for me personally, Financial samples showing products, units sold, manufacturer, sales price, gross sales, profits would work. I do not work with Finances, but think it's great to use them in Power BI. Seems to me one can be more flexible with visuals and DAX functions. Thanks for following up Dustin!

And how can you show a detailed report from clicking in a component of the dashboard?
@DustinRyan9 жыл бұрын
+Iñigo Mazo There's not an easy way to drill down to the details. At this point Power BI isn't optimized for displaying the detail data. The latest version of Power BI does provide drill down functionality but not to the most granular level of data. When you deploy a Power BI model to your Power BI site, however, the data source is deployed so that users can create their own reports. This may give your users the ability to view the data as they wish which may answer some of their business questions.

+Mark Chinsky The Power BI Enterprise Gateway is used to administrate connections between the Power BI Service and the on-prem data sources. You can read more about the Power BI gateways here: powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-gateway-enterprise/

Yes, the refresh can be scheduled daily or hourly. Depending on the data source, you can also created a live connection that does not require a scheduled refresh.

Why would one need PowerBI if they use Excel 2010, with powerpivot and powerquery addin?
@DustinRyan9 жыл бұрын
+ufoubo So there's a few things regarding #PowerBI that I've left out of this video. The crux of Power BI is being able to publish the dashboards to your PowerBI site hosted in the cloud. Once your Power BI report is published, other users can create their own dashboards using your report visualizations or design their own reports using your published data source. With your reports published to the Power BI site, you can also schedule a periodic refresh of the data. And users can access the reports via mobile devices using the Android and iPhone apps.
@sgpleasure9 жыл бұрын
+Dustin Ryan Thanks for the reply. It seems this link has a good summary: stackoverflow.com/questions/29696131/difference-between-powerpivot-powerquery-and-powerbi It leads me to conclude that PowerBI is mainly for collaboration. And in the corporate world, we are not allowed to upload data to the cloud for confidentiality reasons. I have been tasked to create a dynamic sales dashboard and I think I have settled down on Excel 2010.
@DustinRyan9 жыл бұрын
+ufoubo I believe that would be an incorrect conclusion. Power BI is far more than a collaboration tool. Excel is a powerful and flexible tool, but I believe that with a clearer understanding of the capabilities of the tool you'll find that Power BI to be a superior solution for creating and sharing dashboards, integrating disparate data source and accessing your data from anywhere at anytime (including mobile devices). While I understand the concerns of using the cloud, many corporations are taking advantage of the power of the cloud based toolset considering that Azure has met a variety of industry and international security & compliance standards (azure.microsoft.com/en-us/support/trust-center/compliance/). Still, on-prem Power BI is coming according to the MSBI reporting road map (which you can see here: blogs.technet.com/b/dataplatforminsider/archive/2015/10/29/microsoft-business-intelligence-our-reporting-roadmap.aspx).

Great video!! One quick question, Power BI vs Power BI desktop, what's the difference?
@DustinRyan8 жыл бұрын
Power BI Desktop is the desktop authoring tool used to create content. Power BI refers to the service that runs in Azure used to distribute the content, allow collaboration and creation. Power BI Desktop publishes to the Power BI service where the published content is viewed and shared. Hope this helps. :)

+JavierII Gonzalez There's a couple different ways to share content in the Power BI service (app.powerbi.com). You can share a dashboard by right-clicking the ellipses next to the dashboard and clicking share. You can also share content through Content Packs, which you can read about here: powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-service-organizational-content-packs-introduction/ I hope this helps. :)
