Good tutorial, Dusty. Based on your information, I purchased my first pair of glasses from zenni, today. The average Joe does not realize how much markup optometrists charge for a pair of standard progressive scripts. Many seniors use medicare to cover half the cost so they think $200-$300, out-of-pocket, is "reasonable. That's close to $500 from me and the US government for Chinese made frames that break in a year! I paid $108, including shipping! Between Zenni and Costco, the boutique optometrists must be shittin' their drawers! The writing is on the wall: The days or quadruple eyeglass markup is fast coming to a close. The party's over, boys! ...Now, if somebody on youtube can just show me how to make dental implants...

I strongly advocate Zenni optical. After overspending at local opticians and chain stores, I found that this online experience was more than I expected. I can buy 6-8 pairs of progressive glasses that are as good if not better than what I could get at Walmart or Lenscrafters. You can afford to have options and even if one isn't "just right", then so what. I was tired of being ripped off at home, so I encourage the Zenni route.

Yep, 6-8 pairs for the price of one. I just got 3 pairs of progressives and 4 single (reading, computer, distance and sunglasses) ...total of 7 pairs for well under $300. All 7 are perfect/faultless in optics. Hardest part is adjusting the frames when you get them but after years of purchasing from Zenni I've taught myself to become an expert at adjustments. Finally, I noticed Zenni included a Patent notice with my progressives that they were made under license of a patent. Did some checking and had a nice surprise finding out Zenni is dispensing 'free-form' progressives. This is quality stuff. I love Zenni.

Zenni makes some good quality glasses for sure. I purchased a few 3 years back, all still in good shape. Four years ago, I had one from local store. The frame was broken within a year and not repairable. The price would be just 20-30% of the local store prices. Prescription glasses are robbery in US essentially; especially, 99% of them are coming from the same place.

I cannot stress enough how freaking crappy both pairs of progressive lenses I got from zenni are. The far prescription STARTS at the midline which is way to high. You have to tilt your head down just to look ahead. ALSO any looks off center are blurry and worse distorted so that the whole scene "swings" as you turn your head to get focus in the center of the glasses. If you're just a guy who sits around reading the paper and looking up to see the clock or the robin in the backyard, or driving looking straight ahead and occasionally down to navigation they sort of work, BUT forget about walking around with them or any other activity that involves looking around. One of my pairs are big fat wayfarers 44mm high so that's not the issue. The issue is they suck. I am perfectly pleases with the standard (not progressive) glasses I got from them.

I swear by zenni, the lenses were best quality as well as the virtually indestructible frames - all for less than a 5th of what brick and mortar stores have charged me - I have a high Rx and astigmatism, and i need progressives as well. One pair at zenni is $145 - with ALL the high end lense coatings and treatments. at any other optician I would have paid close to $800 for the same. The glasses are now 6 years old and still look knew, the lenses are minimally scratched after all the dropping, falling asleep in them and stepping on them. I mean minimal scratching, like next to nothing!! The frames fit me perfect right out of the box. Just follow zenni's directions for measurements! If you cant afford the cheapest in-office optician, you will see zenni as a God-send! The very best they have with ALL the bells and whistles in frames and lenses will never cost you close to $200. They also have an awesome return policy. And the assortment of frames is almost overwhelming! Go to zenni.com and see the world the right way for so much less! Ps: the glasses I wear in my picture are from zenni!

Just a follow up. Received 2 pair of progressives from HK today. I was very pleased at the results on initial try. Last night at Costco the technician showed me a chart regarding the difference in 'zones' between 'digital', 'standard', etc., lenses. It would appear a 'digital' lens has a larger transition zone, and I would suspect that these offshore glasses would be the same as a 'standard' lens. However for 2 pair of progressives for less then $100.00 I have no complaints. Delivery was 2 weeks

I have bought about a dozen pair of fixed lenses at Zenni and am happy with the result. Havent tried their progressives. I was persuing "computer glasses" and Zenni was the solution at $7/pair. I ordered a range of power (4 pair: 1.5 to 0.75) using my prescription specs and could experiment to find my favorite diopter at computer distance. I went to two eye centers and was unable to get this done since "computer glasses" come in a "one diopter fits all" concept.

Buying glasses online can really save you money. And the quality's great! My favorite idea is to buy more than one pair so I can have different styles for different outfits. Oh - I also love being able to afford prescription sunglasses. Feels like a total luxury.

Focus your eyes on something like a circle on your computer and get the dots lined up so they block the circle. By opening and closing your eyes and moving the dots around on the lens with your fingernail, you can get them aligned so that they appear to occlude the circle with no overlap. Then do the same for something in the distance, in my case I used a streetlamp outside. The difference was 3mm! If you are getting an Rx for glasses for Presbyopia that could make a significant difference.

Hey Erick, could you please tell me how you feel with the glasses after 1 year of this video being made? How's the transition between the far and near sight ? Is it smooth? Is it distorted and uncomfortable? Do you feel they're good quality lenses? I want to buy a pair yet I am afraid of the lack of information of the quality of their lenses in their website. They don't mention if they're 'wide view' or traditional progressive. Could you please help me?

Ah, that is interesting, I did not realize there was to be a specific height for a given Rx, so I may have screwed up then. I just got the impression that the larger the height of the frame for the lens the better for progressives, so when I ordered from Zenni I choose the max lens height. Perhaps it will not work then, but as I ordered a week ago I'll see what happens when they arrive I guess. Thanks for the Head's up.

Thanks for confirming the minimum lens size suitable for progressives, I'm going to go with a 38, the largest I can find with magnetic clip ons on Zenni's site. After spending way too much time researching PD measuring, I discovered I had it wrong, just by 1 on the distance and by 2 on the readers. Turns out the best method is to take a pair of safety glasses and some of those small 8mm stick-on dots. Method to follow:

I just bought my first progressive lenses for my 40mm high frames, and I'm not very impressed. I bought the most expensive grade for widest viewing field but I have to force my eyes down to read in a small area, and can only see a small area in focus on the computer screen, and that with my neck cranked back! My eyes constantly feel like I have muck in them! Beware, I've seen plenty of others on the internet dissatisfied for similar reasons.

I do it myself- its not that hard and if you mess it up the glasses were cheap to begin with. I even repainted the earpieces and it went well until it took forever for the paint to dry so I had blue paint on my hair for a while. Once I took a pair to Wal-Mart and they tried to adjust the fit but messed it up and I had to redo it. If you can't get parts locally, just order another pair if you like them.

Does it matter which lenses you get? I noticed that "aspheric" doesn't appear in the description until the $19.95 level, so I was curious if there was any noticeable quality difference, especially at the edges. I'd like to see if I can get away with the free lenses (my prescription is -3.5, so it's not that strong).

The website drives me crazy. It ends up showing junk frames. When you do select a frame, it disappears in the jungle of said website. I found it was A LOT EASIER to just buy from an eyeglass store. If a lens falls out which they do more than just often It becomes no problem. This website will take over a month to fix the problem. What looks cheap often is.

I just bought progressive lenses from Zenni. I am a first time progressive lens wearer. My progressive lenses are to help correct a medical condition where my eyes turn inward when I focus close. I could not afford the $350+ that walmart wanted for just the lenses (must get hi-index for my Rx). Sadly I am not happy with Zenni's progressive, but it's hard for me to know if it's a Zenni issue or just me not being used to progressive lenses. When I look straight ahead, I can't see distance at all. I have to tilt my head down towards my chin to see distance and that seems quite silly. It seems like Zenni put the distance segment so far up on these lenses that I'd have to make them sit low on my nose to work.

vote4freedom it the way progressive lens are. It takes a little while to get used to. My doctor told me to get them because I wear my glasses all day. I personally don't like progressive lens that's why I got single vision.

Thanks Jus! I have learned more since my original post. Zenni was not at fault in any way. They made the lenses perfectly and do recommend them. My situation was that my Rx was not right from Walmart. I had it checked multiple times there and yet I still cannot see distance with what the doctor has repeatedly assured me is my Rx. Since the progressives were for esophoria, she said that the progressives did nothing to even fix it....(This is why I went with Zenni because I would have been out hundreds of dollars). So now she thinks I need prisms. Well I'm not doing any of that until I get a 2nd opinion because I can see just fine with my contacts but not with glasses. If esophoria is causing blurred vision in my distance, then why isn't that happening also with my contacts. Something doesn't seem right.

They are independent eye doctors, so it depends on the doctor you see. It's no different than going to an optometrist at another vision center. I've had trouble with getting the right Rx for years and years at every single vision place I've ever been to.

I got a $550 pair of the top of the line progressives from Lens Crafters and they were similar to what you were describing with the Zenni. Tried them for three weeks and had to send them back. Went to single vision.

I agree. This fashion for rectangular slitted frames is truly awful. I once bought a pair for reading and a pair for normal sight, but when I realised they made me look shifty I wouldn't wear them outside. I've now reverted to by John Lennon style frames that I had prescribed years ago when I was in school, but I'm not happy with the progressive lenses, they failed to live up to the promise.

Erick is CORRECT about 32-33 mm or above lens height. A competitor of Zenni (repeat: NOT Zenni Optical) allowed me as uneducated non-expert consumer to order progressive bifocals in a shorter lens, like 26 mm. The result was that the bifocal part was too high in the distance vision field. This made the floor seem to be bowed like standing on a hill and "roll" left and right, like a funhouse mirror, and the walls and vertical objects like doorways and fridge would shift left to right as I turned my head, again, like a funhouse mirror. Those MAY have been manufactured wrong as well --- or maybe not --- they insisted these were inspected before shipping ---- but after several conversations/arguments (I avoided getting hostile, preferring a solution vs ego gratification) with Customer Service, a higher-up CSR explained the problem with short height lenses and bifocals. Or I may have researched about that effect online first, on some blogs, then spoke with the CSRs and explained the problem to CSRs. I ordered a different set of frames from same company. They wanted to charge me for "my mistake", but I think I complained to the point that they knocked it down to 50% or free replacement. Anyhow, the final set that I received (from non-Zenni competitor) has been good and adequate for 2 years. Now I understand that it really was THEIR mistake, in not teaching customers about the right size frames and lenses for bifocals and allowing me to place an order that would likely fail, and was not my mistake as the ignorant consumer. Cuz that's their business model, selling high quality optics to ignorant consumers. So that advice *must* be part of customer service. I'm glad that Zenni addresses that issue up-front and has a search function that allows one to screen out frames not suitable for bifocals. Now I'm getting ready to place my order and see how they do.

I also use my PD (pupillary distance) of 31/32 from a previous exam, because one store optician "read" that from my previous prescription (or from old glasses) and unilaterally decided to throw out that special PD measurement because he didn't think it was right or necessary. But it made my vision really distorted.

***** I agree--I wear 30mm progressives and do great. The higher heights allow for more intermediate and close vision, and may help some (like Erick); but for many of that want the more fashionable short frames and lenses, you can do great with shorter lens heights.

For some very, very strange reason, Zenni doesn't sell frames for lenses over 35-36mm tall! All of their glasses are slits! Very strange. I had to get 38mm lenses locally. Much better.

As an Optometrist with 40+ years’ experience, I believe there are some things in this add that don't add up. First, 18 days to get glasses. I can't ever remember using a lab that had more than a 3-day turnaround time. To me, 18 days means that what they are selling are foreign lenses. My guess, and this is only a guess, China. Just in case you didn't know, China is not known for top of the line ophthalmic lenses. Do your doctor a favor, have him/her check out the lenses you get back from Zenni. Optometry is a serious business and it's a pleasure to have a good laugh once in a while. P.S. Read Art M's comment below mine.
