The Byrds put feeling into it also but a different sort that people who are my age (73+ years old) can relate to as we remember the 1960's and what it was like maturing during those times (drugs, war, dating, work, school). Dusty was "old school" but so was Tom Jones and some others and they did strike a chord with many.

Every time I hear Dusty's Goin' Back I can hardly reach the end without welling up. Haunting is the right description for her interpretation. Dusty's voice draws on regret, desire, melancholy, and gives the lyrics a meaning well beyond the words themselves. Others have tried nobly with this song, but only Dusty makes it real.

Carole King herself said nobody sang "Goin' Back" better than Dusty Springfield. She ought to know, I'd say, and I totally agree with her. In my opinion, "Goin' Back" is a perfect song for Dusty's soulful delivery. Dusty's version is the gold standard, and no male singer or group even comes close.

Sometimes you hear a song that stays dear to you and remains a ferociously poignant part of your life, this is what Dusty does for me. each time I listen to it I am choked up with emotion and occasionally tears flow unashamedly. the loss of this superbly talented lady has caused a huge void in the music scene as she was a special complete talent on her own. and I also would gladly go back to her days in the 60s see I'm one of the mods and she was an icon for a lot of us. I have to confess, I'm not much of a Dusty Springfield fan, growing up on a diet mainly of punk and heavy metal, followed by copious amounts of prog. However, this song is an absolute classic, one of the very best by any solo singer artist. Beautiful and timeless, stands up to repeated listening.

What I loved (and still love) about Dusty the most, apart from her beauty and talent, was her vulnerability. I still get a lump in my throat when I hear this song. She sang everything from the heart. Carole King was a genius. What a prolific output!! And, my being a Dusty fan from 1963, I cannot believe that I never heard this song until about 5 years ago!!!
