One of my all time favourites from one of the best 🙂 For the first time today I detected a 'spill' on the recording at 02'46" - a man's voice singing the exact rhythm of the orchestra, going 'ba-ba BAA-BAA ba-ba-ba' . Could it have been Peter Knight (RIP), the conductor, or someone else, any thoughts(?) 🙂

It was the song Steve my dad asked to be played at his funeral which I did. I love the song and Dustys is my favourite version but my dad's was phil collins. I'm still trying to understand what the song meant to him personally. I'm 58 and I guess I really should know

@@rmw4496 It's about the loss of innocence when someone reached adulthood, and yearns for the happier times in their childhood when things were not so complex.

@@youchwb6005 thank you. I really appreciate your input. I've tried to use the song to better understand my dad. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. He raised me alone from the age of 2 when he was just a young 20 year old man himself.

Brings a tear to my eye. My Da used to sing this one. He died quite young (53) so - although this could be seen as a “woman’s song” - the lyrics seem even more poignant.. Live my days, instead of counting my years... I can play the game of life to win..

Just when I thought I had a list of my petsonal favourite songs that just couldn't get any better, this evening it just did. Such a hauntingly beautiful song. Greetings from Italy.

The line "I think I'm going back" appears in the song "Mother Love", on the very last album of Queen called "Made in Heaven". My whole life I assumed it was part of one of those unfinished songs put together by Freddie Mercury. I just saw this, and read your comment, and now I need to sit down for a moment. Boy, life is full of surprises, isn't it?

Goin' Back Dusty Springfield I think I'm goin' back To the things I learned so well in my youth I think I'm returning to Those days when I was young enough to know the truth Now there are no games To only pass the time No more coloring books No Christmas bells to chime But thinking young and growing older is no sin And I can play the game of life to win I can recall a time, When I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend And now I think I've got A lot more than a skipping rope to lift Now there's more to do Than watch my sailboat glide And everyday can be my magic carpet ride And I can play hide and seek with my fears And live my days instead of counting my years Let everyone debate the true reality, I'd rather see the world the way it used to be A little bit of freedom's all we're lack So catch me if you can I'm goin' back Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Carole King / Gerry Goffin

that orchestral middle section was typical of the overblown sixties epics...one thinks of mcarthur park, james bond, epic sandle and sword films etc...its as if the song producers felt this needed a lift....were they crazy?......that marvellous underplayed piano intro and dusty`s beautiful creamy vocals override all.
