Dutch Army Hooped Bivvi vs Outhaus Swag Tent - ideal for wild camping

While spending a year in Australia thirty years ago I looked into swags but choose a tent. Several years ago had the onehooped for a while but skipped to the Carinthia observer plus, two poles and little more headroom. Use it on all my expeditions for years now. Does the job and reliable. I have to say that I really like both. However both systems require a tarp or poncho cover over head? The swag does come in many different types the best one I found is the swag that opens from the side where it has a built in awning where you can put treking poles for better air flow and rain protection.

Yes, I agree, if it is raining and you want to cook you will need a tarp to stay dry.

Hi! Dutch hooped bivy - which year and manufacturer is? Does zippers are heavy, newer ones are scary tiny. Regards from Slovenia! Aleksander

Sorry, don't know the year of manufacture. Came with main zipper removed so I bought a chunky replacement off ebay.

Did you find your dutch bivvy's modified extra zip down panel and bug net useful? I'm considering doing the same sort of thing, as I can't see how to keep the inside ventilated and keep the rain out on warm wet summer nights, without setting a tarp over it.

Yes it was useful but I've come to the conclusion that I will always use it with a tarp and the extra zip panel would be sure to let rain in after a while. Even if the tarp was low and camo, it would still be quite stealthy. Now you could say 'why not just use a tarp' but I've realised I've never been cold in the bivvy so I think it works out as extra insulation - and I've never felt damp either.

​@@WildCampingandmore That makes sense. I've made an extra mozzy net that zips into the 'getting in and out' flap, which I then hold up with a very light pole (old alloy arrow shaft.) It gives me way more ventilation, without uninvited guests entering. I can fold the net out of the way to cook while lying on my side, etc. Total extra weight 5 oz; I shouldn't need to carry a tarp. Yet to test in the rain, but that's forecast for tomorrow...
