I like learning about MRE's because they're what I think I'd like to include when making a month long home survival kit. Doesn't take up space, has it's own heating source, and in an emergency situation would feel like a real meal. But some are still better than others, and I learn best by seeing others use the product rather than the picture instructions.

Great episode Mike. L o v e the tent... probably not the price. I'm an American veteran so I've had plenty of MRE's. My favorites are • Beef Stew • Mini Meatballs in Marinara sauce • Italian Sausage • Southwest Beef & Beans • BBQ Beef Strips. You got lucky with the heating bag... one out of 5 or 6 is a DUD. We also love the cheese spread packets (the bacon flavored). Beware of American MREs with Eggs. I haven't really had any other MREs except for the British (those ARE the best as far as taste, and all the extras tossed in... drink mixes, coffee, tea, cocoa, water purification tabs, lifeboat matches...) I was assigned to the HMS Amazon as liaison when she made Port of Call in the USA prior to Falklands Guardship duties in 1992. I've seen the French & Italian ones. I'll pass. The Italian MREs come with a miniature folding BCB stove (not the one you fold by hand, but an exact miniature of the regular BCB). Some have the low alcohol content aperitif. European MREs are expensive over here. Your police seemed to be decent enough. With all the "unrest" they have to be careful. Here in the States the U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing camping in public by the homeless. Many of our police treat homelessness as a crime. At least I can say that I didn't tolerate my officers to mistreat the homeless. Cheers... P.S. I went to the POMOLY website and this tent is under $200... $180 +/-. They offer a dozen different types and the $ range is from $180 to $ several hundred.

My favorite MREs were indeed the Norwegian arctic rations, specially the fish ones were great. I also enjoyed the Dutch 24h ration packs and controversially the British rat packs with the all-day breakfast and the sticky toffee pudding. Garbage, pound store tin level stuff, but a guilty pleasure. I still have a bunch of French RCIRs, and they are a bit more quirky with pheasant and venison with brandy pate etc. To me MREs are a window into a nations soul. You are what you eat after all.

Hey Mike, former U.S. military member (Air Force) here. A lot of times (in training) we weren't allowed to use the MRE heater because they stayed hot for so long and created a risk of fire, so we just had to get along with cold taco meat - or whatever else you happened to get for your meal. You can definitely use them more than once after they've been activated, so by all means heat up that rice, and the cheese too if you like! As for recommendations, it looks like MRE Mountain's site only has two that I'm reasonably certain I've had before - #17, Maple Pork Sausage Patty, and #24, Southwest Beef and Black Beans. Both excellent choices but if I was going to recommend just one I'd have to say try the Maple Pork Sausage!! Also, in case you haven't been turned on to this little secret - the best MRE item OF ALL TIME: the jalapeno cheese spread (check Menu #2). You're welcome ;)

I never seem to get enough time to be able to get into period dress, for event scenario's, including cooking my meals and having time to eat them. Due to the amount of time that it takes to prepare a simple meal, no worries, have fun camping.

Soldier here, It was actually alot of fun watching you try the MRE. Very very similar to the Canadian MRE. I was praying your ration heater didnt dud, sometimes they dont work or suddenly decide to 20 mins later. Also they are chemically activated dont breathe the fumes or use them as pocket heaters. Although! You ate it wrong 😅 Aint got no time for that... annnnd the tortillas are always always cracking down the middle; most of us would have just ate the taco packet with the spoon and then had a tortilla cheese sandwich 😂

To put this in perspective though, you could go your entire life in the UK and not see firearms. It’s not maybe as rare in the countryside or farmland but I live surrounded by farms and it’s really not common. If you know, you know that guns in their carry bags are not really the MO of criminals. I would sooner the cops check than not though. It’s a very different set of circumstances here.

@@jonmoore873: Not entirely true. The police in Northern Ireland always have a side arm. At one time it was revolvers until they migrated onto semi-automatic pistols. In the '70s they would also have been armed with H&K MP5s. It struck me that the person reporting the incident might have thought they were terrorists burying an arms cache. No harm done, it added interest to the video and made for an interesting story for his wife.

MREs are the way forward for camping trips - zero fuss and great food. Ok, mediocre food. Alright, sustenance that all tastes like tomato with indistinguishable meat or meat-like product... Best ones I've had are French 24hr rations by a long way. Only good british ration content is the rice pudding 😁

I think that the jogger might possibly have been a relative of one of the local residents, doing some jogging while visiting, and not familiar with the commonality of firearms in the area. Not being fully familiar, they reached out to the local constabulary with their concerns, and the police responded in a polite and professional manner.

It was dealt with very politely by both sides, and I sincerely hope that the Police dog had a sausage and that TAO now knows the local officers personally - this works best for the world and the rest of us. The Police haters out there might like to ask how they would have dealt with that if they were both parties. Top job Mike, and a great video too.
