Welcome to this food-focussed Dutch culture guide covering some of the most typical Dutch snacks and dishes you can find in Holland - don't watch on an empty stomach! 😅
I spent a few "gezellig" days eating my way around the cities of Den Haag and Utrecht, absorbing the Dutch culture and scoffing everything in sight. From stroopwafel to herring, cakes to coffee, natural wines to Indonesian food, croquettes to Lebanese street food, monastery-brewed beers to organic breakfasts. And a lot more in between. Super lekker! 🤤
In this video I share 18 typical Dutch culture foods to try in these two beautiful and often overlooked cities. This list showcases the diversity that can be found in Den Haag and Utrecht and just what great foodie destinations they are.
Below are all the places I visited along with their websites, and you can skip straight to each section in the video too if you want to.
And don't forget to click the thumbs up, comment and subscribe if you enjoyed this video - thank you 😊

Hello lovely Dutch visitors! You may be wondering (and a bit annoyed as to) why I have referred to the country as Holland and not The Netherlands? This is because the tourism board for the country specifically instructed me to refer to the country only as Holland in this video and to not call it The Netherlands at all - I have no idea why 🤷‍♀️ I do understand there are several provinces in The Netherlands and only two of them have the word 'Holland' in. And you'll be pleased to know I refer to the country as The Netherlands in all other walks of life. The tourism website for the whole country is also www.holland.com/! Apologies if I've offended any Dutch people by referring to the country as Holland. May I suggest you take the matter up with the tourism board, perhaps enough emails can get them to change their branding! 🧡

Seems to me like you are making this video for people that want to visit. I'm Dutch but always refer to my country as Holland(a) when talking to foreigners. When I say The Netherlands they often have no clue what I'm talking about. And when our national teams are playing the supporters all sing 'Hup Holland Hup'. Kudo's for visiting two different cities instead of Amsterdam.

@@abrahamcusters2987 Thanks very much Danny. I was getting quite a lot of comments from angry Dutch people as to why I had called the country Holland. So I thought I better put out a response to address it. I'm glad my using the word Holland hasn't offended everyone! 😅 And good that the tourism board are focussing on 'The Netherlands' now

brand recognition? holland was the origin of the ships. so the sailors were hollanders so many countries know us as holland kind of like how the tribe that used to live in Germany near now france was the allemang while the one near the Polish border was niemce which is why the French call it Allemange and the Polish call it Niemcy or something. but yeah we do not like it :)

Haha good point! I think because The Netherlands is so small, two sites are considered different places by The Dutch even though they are so close together. And this is unusual to foreigners. For example, the beach is called Scheveningen but it's just a 15 minute drive from the city centre of Den Haag. If that was the case in the UK, that beach would definitely be 'in' the city of Den Haag. And I think people from other bigger countries see it like that too. Apologies if it gets annoying 🤣 It's certainly good to know for future, thank you!

By far the best channel of its kind I've encountered so far. Most people who go to the Netherlands don't seem to reallise there are places outside of Amsterdam. I love your enthousiasm and how you not only focus on the famous foods but the things that are part of the culture too. Like with the indonesian stuff. I do have to say, as someone who lives in the far south, the big city culture is very different to the one you'd find in Noord-Brabant or Limburg. Places worth checking out if you're ever back here.

Lovely video! 7:34 Very happy to have seen this part included as well. Both of my parents' families were part of the mixed population that moved to the Netherlands from Indonesia. I'm not sure if you can say my parents' and grandparents' generations started cooking it to impress the Dutch, I was always under the impression it was more because it was the food they dearly missed in their new country. Either way I'm glad that the older generation worked hard to create Indonesian food culture in the Netherlands, and that it was therefore possible for us younger Dutch born generations to grow up with Indonesian food too.

Hi Sam! Actually the majority of cheese available to buy anywhere is not vegetarian as it uses animal rennet to separate the curds from the whey (rennet is from the lining of a baby cow's stomach).
