We used to have the "Bel-me-niet register", where we could register, if we don't like to be called by some random company. That worked well, but it required the effort of registration. In July 2021, the government changes the rules, and now it just applies to everyone, without registration. I know that in the states politicians tell you that regulation is bad or doesn't work, but this is regulation that people like and that works to protect people from getting scammed. Our government still serves the citizens, sometimes. The American government ONLY serves business. If business wants to make money from screwing people, they'll allow it.

@ItzSKYVlogs It is exactly as above says. I rarely see stop signs but they are around. Non in my hometown but near school of my oldest is a stop sign since there is a crossing where you don't have great view of the situation. Plus it is a double crossing in the sense that a road and a separate bikepath crosses another road without a separate bikepath.

There are stop signs, but not as much as we see in the states. Certainly not 4 way crossings with 4 stop signs. There’s always one road that has priority. (So that’s half the signs already). Further a lot of locations where the US has stop signs, we use yield signs (again a lot of those situations are regulated by priority difference between crossing roads). Stop signs here are mainly used if the situation cannot be well estimated, so a stop to look good what’s happening.
@WizardOfOss

There doesn't have to be one road with priority, but on an equal intersection traffic from the right has priority. No signs needed for that. Another reason for less stop signs: Roundabouts everywhere...

We have "Bel Me Niet Register" (=don't call me registry") If you put your phone-number in this registry, it becomes illegal for businesses to call you without your prior consent. If business do call you, you can file a complaint, if they get enough of them they get fined by the government, if they keep doing it fines get higher, keep doing it, they are shut down completely. So can business call you? Yes mostly if you buy something from them, they ask you for permission to contact you and then it's up to you. So it's in opt-in system. In the 90s these telemarketers went rampant here too, but we quickly fixed it 😀
@kk-kz8nc
@kk-kz8nc 27 күн бұрын
This info isn't up to date any more (well the register part at least. Now as a company you can not call someone unless your phone number is in their database because you where a customer in the last 3 years, or have given to a good cause before or that you gave consent to call you. The "bel me niet register" hasn't been around since 2021. And if they do call, you can say that you do not want to be called ever again and they will have to remove your information from their database. If they don't and do call again you can lodge a complaint at the Autoriteit Consument & Markt by using a form on their site.

As an Dutch “ethnic European” in the Netherlands I never ask a person who “has different looks ” about their ethnicity … I just want to get to know the person as a person, not “why someone looks differently from me”. It’s up to anyone themselves to reveal their identity, whether it’s cultural, gender or looks. The world today is mixed and it’s a wealth to get to know people who are different from yourself. Evolutionary the most diverse population will be the strongest to stand the future.

I appreciate you, I wish more people thought like that. Sadly I often get asked about my ethnicity (by every 1 in 3 people). Even if they don't mean any harm, it ends up making me feel different and alienated. Especially with follow-up questions like "so do you eat stamppot?"... Yes I do. I'm a regular Dutch person just like the rest of you. But honestly, at this point I no longer feel like I am.

Last week I upgraded my PC the Dutch way; I replaced my Ryzen 3 2200G and 16GB DDR4 from April 2019 with a Ryzen 5 5600GT and 32GB DDR4. It did cost me almost the same price ±$4 as those 2019 parts. I paid a whopping $179. I admit I'm in the Ryzen 5000 generation and I miss out on the newer Ryzen 7000 and 9000 generations and the faster DDR5, but I paid less than $200 instead of the price of a new PC. God willing I will use it 10 years till 90. I know what I'm doing, I worked in ICT from 17-3-69 till 1-1-11 :)

Spam calls are actually illegal in The Netherlands, at least to consumers. It's also illegal to sell your data and the regulations get tougher by the year. There is an exception for non-profits that already have your data, they are allowed to call you for only a certain amount of years and there is an exception for businesses. So even if you are self-employed, you might get a sell call every once in a while, but there is a service on your phone warning you about those being spam, so you don't have to pick up

The European general rule if there are no traffic signs is "right before left". So the person coming to the crossing to your right has the right of way, the person to your left has to yield to you. So if there's nobody coming at you on your right hand side, you can just keep going... Sometimes there are roads that are priority roads - very often these are through-roads with higher speeds that are crossed by streets with lower speeds. In these cases there are traffic signs and/or triangles (sharks' teeth) on the road surface to indicate that you have to yield if there's traffic. You are not required to always make a full stop at sharks' teeth, you just have to slow down, look and yield if there's traffic on the road you're trying to cross. As far as I remember from my days in the US, the rule is that the first person to stop is the first who is allowed to go. Which is a lot more likely to lead to arguments if there's an accident. It's generally very easy to see who came from which direction after a collision. It's impossible to see who stopped first at a stop sign after the fact. 🙂 Also - stop signs are stupid, especially for cyclists. It's a pain to have to come to a full stop and then start up again on a bike or a scooter. It would cause a lot of unnecessary waiting if the cylist came first and all the drivers have to wait for them to gain speed again after stopping.

About stop signs... when the trafic lights don't work for some reason there are some signs.... some painted on the road ("shark teeth"), some on a pole (often an orange square with a wite rim standing on its tip for "right of way" for one road and the crossing one has a white triangle with a red rim standing on its tip for "other trafic goes firstt"). If not ... trafic (not just cars) from the right go first. In The Netherlands there are also "scam calls", but there is also something like the "bel-me-niet-register", where you can leave your phone number. Companies that use call centres have to check that register to see if they are allowed to call you.... I'm not sure if they do, but then ... I used to be called by companies in the past, but since I registered my number there I am not anymore,

They preety much do nowadays if they don't they get a fine and you can sue them directly. You don't paid much but they are liable for all the costs so after the 50 euro they have to pay you they also need the pay for 2500 euro that even a quick case like this costs. Besides that they probable have done it more often and they get a fine for that to and those fines can be pretty high.

Scam calls used to be a thing in NL, but now there is legislation against it. O ly companies that you do business with, or give money to, are allowed to contact you through a phonecall. Best trick against that is to reduce the amount you give each month in that phonecall. They can adjust that, because they are asking for you to donate more. Do that 2x, and guaranteed, they will never call you again 😆😆

Stop signs are in the most part un necessary : On crossings without traffic signals or priority rules, give way to all traffic on your right side, including pedestrians and cyclists. > Buses have priority when pulling out from a bus stop inside the urban area. > Trams always have the right of way, and all road users must yield to trams when crossing tram tracks or intersections. > On intersections with ‘Shark’s teeth’ (Haaientanden) road markings you must yield to traffic coming from left and right. This includes cyclists and motorised traffic. In the Netherlands these markings and accompanied signs are used frequently. > Drivers intending to make left or right turns must yield to pedestrians and cyclists proceeding straight ahead. Traffic flows far more smoothly in the Netherlands than it does in the US.

2:30: One of the things I only noticed in a video by Not Just Bikes (and wasn't even on that particular subject) is the way our junctions are set up: even when lights do fail in the USA it strikes me that there hardly ever are markings on who can go first, making it extremely difficult to provide some kind of regulation without the lights. I than just picked random places in the USA on maps and compared them to junctions in my country (Netherlands). And basically on matter where you go, there will be markings that show what to do if the lights don't work (and by law, lights or electronic signs prevail over posted signs, and posted signs prevail over road markings, though they usually complement eachother). Many junctions in the USA I saw only feature a stop marker for every direction, but that's it. There's no priority indication or something and pedestrians usually have no zebras at all. We have stop signs by the way ;) I know only two and I need to travel a while for them ;)

Regarding the American teams apparel, they are popular for decades already. I grew up with them. The Chicago Bulls were probably the most popular (due to the popularity of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen) and you will still see them. Mostly millennials is the actual target group as it was a thing from our youth. There is a another team which is more odd but were almost evenly popular: The Raiders. I think it was because of that cool logo and more black-ish style apparel. These are now even more exclusive apparel. A jersey will set you back way more than the newest Nike shoes. And last but not least: the New york Yankees! Those caps are unparalleled popular. Still sold at any sports shop you can find for top dollar (or top euro in our case).

I had no idea they were an existing abbreviation, or some brand or something. Now I do know I still don't really care. There are stop signs in the Netherlands. But you'll only find them on intersections where your sight is obstructed or for other safety reasons. If you have clear view on an intersection with priority rules, you'll see 'shark teeth' -as we call them- painted on the road, with the white triangle pointing down sign. That means that you don't have to come to a complete stop before driving onto the intersection.
@Eric_Maastricht
@Eric_Maastricht 28 күн бұрын
On stop signs, they exist but only where it would be dangerous to just slowly progress on the crossing. To normally give precendence ("voorrang") there are the triangular traffic signs (point down, either as a sign or painted on the road). You must have seen those a lot! If there are no signs for precendence, traffic from the right ALWAYS has precendence.

Stop signs aren't as common as in some other countries but they do exist. You might find more of them in rural areas as in cities there are several traffic options that have a similar purpose (like the elevated bits where smaller streets join a bigger one) or the standard rule that (when signs don't indicate otherwise) any traffic coming from the right can go first. Thinking of it, I only know of a few in The Hague. In France I saw them on about every other corner.

@dj_e.t.

You don't have many stop signs because most crossings are controlled by right-of-way. Those red-white triangle signs or the triangles on the road ("shark teeth") mean you have to yield. Look at any traffic light crossing. They almost all have these signs, which come into effect when the traffic lights are not operating. Stop signs are only placed on dangerous spots, with limited visibility. Or a bike lane that crosses a busy street. You'd find a stop sign more outside of the city center than in the center, which might be why you haven't found one yet.

Hey, I enjoy your videos, but I need to point something out regarding 4:04. When people ask, 'Where are you from?' there’s often an indirect implication that they’re asking about your ethnicity. For example, I’m a third-generation Dutch-Moroccan. I always respond by naming my city, but the follow-up question is almost always, 'Okay, but where are your parents from?' In my case, this continues until they find out where my grandparents are from

We used to have stop signs, only at dangerous intersections. But almost all of those intersections have been made safer with roundabouts or traffic lights. And almost everywhere the speed limit has been lowered, in cities and villages usually 30 km/h. In general, an attempt has been made to make everything inherently safer, which has made these really dangerous intersections disappear.

Hi thanks for another positive video. I love how you always find a positive twist. Like about being frugal...we are usually looked down upon by our neighbours (Belgium) and touristic places (where they can speak a few Dutch words: kijken kijken niet kopen) where they cannot sell their trinkets to us. You make me feel good about my own standards 😂. Btw here in Utrecht there are several stop signs around the bike lane Het Lint. I was really amazed by the Canadian system of: whoever reaches the crossing first gets to go first (at a "gelijkwaardige kruising"). Thankfully my Canadian cousin explained this to me otherwise I would have been waiting for ages for "right" to go first LOL. Never been to the US but am curious now ;)

For the spam calls - we do have them. But there is a 'don't call me' register, which telemarketers are not allowed to call if you are on that list. Call centers now usually call customers for companies, trying to offer them deals on extensions, or new products, etc. The stop signs are around - for bad intersections. I cross one weekly by a car-bike path intersection. The intersection is badly angled and hard to view properly unless you come to a full stop.

To us Dutchies, if you brag about something expensive it's seen as saying "look at this fancy thing you probably can't afford", while bragging about something cheap is more like "look at this fancy stuff that may inspire you to get better value for your money too". Though personally, I'm all for people spending a bit extra on things that actually have a functional/recreational advantage to pay extra for, and being like "this wasn't cheap, but man it's worth it to me in the end". As I see it, we try to save money whereever we can so that we can treat ourselves more on things that actually make us happy without needing validation from anyone but yourself.

There are scam calls and texts here too, but there is a do not call register on line. Once you register your phonenumber there scam calls and scam texts to your phone become illegal and if they don't stop you can report them to the authorities through the register. Most EU countries have similar systems, because they count as consumer protection and the EU coordinates consumer protection rules.

In fact the last one she offered me I declined because I just liked the one I already had. My previous i-phone I handed down to an old lady whose phone had broken down. She’s had it for 2 years and is still happy. The thing is those phones last a long time so it’s just wasteful to keep replacing them. Not just money wise but also because of the environment people should not keep replacing items.
