SO true. American mayo is no mayo to us. It's a ....snacksauce. Real mayonaise is creamy, soft, rich, smooth, and tastes just right between sweet, sour and salty. It doesn't stick to your mouth, and it tastes great with fries. Really, for real... nowhwere NEAR american mayo.

My son lives in the Netherlands so I decided to learn Dutch. Probably unsurprisingly it's not been too difficult because English too is a Germanic language so there are lots of similar vocabulary. It makes sense that the British man with a background in linguistics should be good at guessing the meanings.

English is after all partly a Dutch Frisian language. The Frisians came along with both the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. The Frisians were the farmers, traders, and craftsmen that came with them and settled the lands. They were the common people. But all the fame went to the warrior elite Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. They were the rulers and conquerors and therefore much more recorded in history.

Oke, I was joking, but she misses out a lot on dialectal differences also some that do matter. She sounds like she has grown up in the west where dialects are not as strong (since Hollands is the dominant form of Dutch.), so it is quite logical that she does not realise the importance and you need to deside what you are teaching, so you are not realy teaching all kinds of odd non standerd differences. I believe she is doing her best, but sometimes it just feels a bit shortsighted.😅

What nobody in the comments section go correct: *We do not take mayonnaise with our fries.* Originally, like the Belgians still do, we did take mayonnaise. But mayonnaise is rather oily and doesn't really taste well on fries. So we invented 'fries sauce' which is based on mayonnaise but has more starch in it (I think...), making it appear and taste less oily, giving it more substance and I wouldn't eat my fries without it. Unfortunately, nowadays many fries are sold with 'light fries sauce' and as anyone with taste buds knows, *light* never was any good in food. Never has been, never will be.

Old English is closely related to Dutch but even closer related to the Frysian language all are related to old Germannic languages. Dutch i"m told is very heard to lear, even most natives cant write flawless Dutch. The grammer rules arent easy at all and 'preference spelling' rules changed lots of words it does'nt make it easier. BUT we Dutchies are quite well in making practing spoken Dutch difficult because 'the road of least resistance' is the easiest we speak English quite often because it wastes less time. Fun namechange because the Dutch word was impossible to pronounce is Brooklynn, it was meant to be Breukelen. So cute when non Dutch try to say Dutch words, while Dutch still has many many dialects that wont syplify matters either LOL

historic germanic and gealic(i mean old english and old scottish with this word) languages always had been similar and perhaps even the same when you go further back in time, but i can be wrong about it.

Simon studied old english. So this is almost too easy to him, since Old English is literally almost the same as Old Dutch and Modern Dutch.

dutch mayonaise is not as sour as the french original one. so it's actually pretty awesome with fries. Ketchup for me is too sweet.
