I think it's so funny that some Americans do enjoy our language so much because if I hear myself speak I just assume I sound like some kind of farmer. I have never really thought of our language as a facinating one, so thanks for the new perspective on that ;).

cool explanation of the most important features of the Dutch language! just reminds me of this story: during WWII the Dutch had one way to convince themselves that they were dealing with a real Dutchman and not with a German spy, who learned to speak good Dutch. you would have to say "Scheveningen". if you were able to do this properly, you had to be a real Dutchman, no doubt. it's such a funny story...

"subject, verb, object" As a dutch person I tried several sentences(including offensive ones I won't mention here), but the guy is actually right! Haha never knew this :v EDIT:: 's-Hertogenbosch comes from "Des hertoghs bosch" meaning "The dukes forest" Now it's called "Den Bosch" which is kindof ~old dutch~ for "The forest".
@donnathelightningbug9 жыл бұрын
's Gravenhage actually means "of the Count's hedge", but I can see where the confusion comes from. Grave is "graf", count is "graaf", but they both have the same plural, "graven". In addition to that, "graven" when used as a verb means to dig.

Debbie321lopez For foreigners...most definitely. But for Danish and Dutch people...both languages sound really weird in comparison. If im not mistaken...it has something to do with the germanian Empire in the past(not Germany!!)

+VeniVidiAjax When I hear people speaking Danish, it almost sounds to me as if they're mumbling or not finishing their words. I suppose when you hear it more often, it's easier to see similarities.
@ludwigvanosselaer41799 жыл бұрын
+VeniVidiAjax , that is weird, I'm Dutch and I find the scandinavian language is not to understand for us. It's belong to on other language group . There aren't no differences and similarities with Dutch or on other language . Are you maybe from Denmark?

About the meaning of Den Haag and Den Bosch: Den Haag = 's Gravenhage = Des Graven Hage which means 'The Count's Hedge'. Graaf = Count Den Boch = 's Hertogenbosch = Des Hertogen Bosch which means 'The Duke's Forest'. Hertog = Duke

I'm glad you like the language. I guess when you get past some sounds that are hard to pronounce, it gets a bit easier. However, when you then want to get better and dive deeper into things like the Dutch grammar, things can get confusing again, as a lot of Dutch people make mistakes whether to a 'd', a 't' or a 'dt' at the end of a verb (they all sound the same), even some adults. I for one think that my language is beautiful, especially its poetry and slightly older literature. Sadly, many people, especially those around my age (15), absolutely hate the Dutch language, mainly because nearly everyone is very proficient in English and 70% of the media we see in a day is in English if not more. Day to day Dutch starts to get boring when you've been speaking it for years, so English may sound 'fancier', or just 'cooler'. I'm not saying my own opinion is best, but most of those people have never taken the time to appreciate Dutch literature. Anyways, nice videos, keep it up!

The R is basically the same as the Italian R. Your G and EU is very good.
@K9R9 жыл бұрын
I like the example of Hermine saying "Wingardium leviosa". Saying this in an absolute overdriven British way makes you produce the exact correct sound for "eu". Try to pronounce "neus" (nose) and "keuken" (kitchen).

's-Gravenhage has nothing to do with a grave. "Graaf" (is single. Plural is "graven") is the Dutch word for an earl or a count (both are the same in Dutch). And "hage" is old-Dutch for both a hedge or a wood. The "'s-" in front is a very old-fashioned abbreviation of "des", which means something like "it belongs to". The old Dutch name was "des Graven ha(a)ge" (with either one or two a's), which means "The Earls/Counts woods". Before it got that name, the place was called "Die Haghe", wich is nowadays "Den Haag", translated as "The Hague". This name is used more often, because for foreigners it is easier to pronounce than 's-Gravenhage. "Graven" is also a verb, it means to dig or digging. "Graven is also plural for both "graaf" (as I told before) and "graf". This last word means grave. You see? Dutch isn't that easy ;)

The plural of a count (graaf/graven) is the same as grave (graf/graven) and also the verb digging is graven. So The Hague = Den Haag = 's-Gravenhage = des Graven Hage = or could be The Count's Hague, The Graves Hague or The digging Hague. Depending on your fancy ;-). But seeing how 's-Hertogenbosch/Den Bosch = Des Hertogen Bosch = The Dukes' Forest. The proper translation for graven in 's-Gravenhage = count's. 😄

@SilverWave649 жыл бұрын
CoolCodyProductions At writing, there are some minor differences, e.g. a few terms are different, but other than that, it's the same. However, the pronunciation is a lot different. Austria and Switzerland speak a German dialect, which can be quite hard to understand if you didn't grow up there. However, everyone in Switzerland and Austria also speaks normal German, if they notice you don't speak the dialect, so it's not a problem at all ;)
