The vowel pronunciation in the Dutch language. Hopefully I can get a couple other videos up soon.

I'm a native English speaker from America and I just got interested in learning other languages, so I picked up some cheap books at the local Half Price Books on Dutch and Russian (obviously to be studied one at a time). While I expect Dutch to be a little easier since I can already speak German, it was great to see this video up and really give an auditory representation of these vowels. It was quite puzzling when only reading about them. This is the first result for "dutch vowel" btw. Thanks!

Great help especially to those who self-study Dutch! It gets extra hard since I've no one to talk with and practise the language! Hope to see more videos from you Tammy!

You are quite right. The official Dutch sound for 'ij' sounds something between the English 'ay' and 'I'. But in northern Dutch dialects it sounds more like English 'I'.

thank you tammytheburke this is just what I was looking for!

No, OU in Dutch sounds like OW such as in OH or DOH (Homer Simpson), which is not the same sound like HOW. IJ or EI in Dutch sounds like EY in English (Y as in WHY is a different sound). the short U in Dutch is used in English such as in ERR.., the longer UU in Dutch is not used in English, allthough it is like the U in USED but then without the 'Y' sound we also hear in YOU. The OE sounding like OO in ENgl is a little shorter pronounced, same for the IE sounding like a shorter English EE.

The dialects in the Netherlands are often more connected to the languages of surrounding countries, than the official language is. Quite a few words are similar or (pronounced) the same in Drents (spoken in the province where I live) as in English and German.

Thanks a lot! Merci beaucoup! This pronunciation about vowels is very important in order to speak well Dutch.

Ik will spreek Neederlands en Frans. Zij zijn essentieel naar mij. Ik wens jij een prettig weekend!

IJ is not like I or Y, it's a sound that goes from E (as in pet) to Y (as in Yoga). Other than that, I completely agree.

Or you could also say the Dutch "oe" is like the "oe" in English "shoe" (at least in the US)

You are right about some things, the 'OU' thing is completely wrong though, so check that
@dromycatcher11 жыл бұрын
the OU such as in the word 'rouw' sounds like OH (my god) in English not 'HOW' from which the latter in English is pronounced like 'hew' with a 'fat e-sound' as we say in Dutch
@TaoPiet12 жыл бұрын
UU, UI en EU zijn misschien onze 'Scandinavische' klanken. Ik vind ze altijd een beetje Zweeds klinken. Maar wat vind je dan van het Engelse 'th'. Dit noemen wij 'slissen', ofwel een spraakgebrek. En wat dacht je van thr in through? Dit klinkt toch als een rollende rrr, die de Engelsen niet zouden hebben.

It is actually exactly the same sound. IJ is called a long IJ(lange IJ) en EI is called short EI(korte EI). There is no real logic in whether to use EI or IJ in a word, you just have to know it.
@vvmaerlant89176 жыл бұрын
Het verschil is etymologisch. Dus de herkomst van de woorden met 'ij' kan anders zijn dan de herkomst van woorden met 'ei'.
@DaldeejerDrikus10 жыл бұрын
Ik hoor wel een verschil tussen dauw en douw, rauw en rouw, mauwen en mouwen en kauwt en koud. Misschien heeft dit ook te maken met dialecten.

There is a difference between 'ei'' and ''ij'' , In some dialects the "ij" is prenounced as ''ie''. Other than that there is no difference.

No I am completely right. The problem is that you don't know how to correctly pronounce certain English words ,hence your confusion.
@Merthjen12 жыл бұрын
google translator XD im dutch
@dromycatcher11 жыл бұрын
no you are completely wrong and it comes down again as what I said earlier, because your English pronunciation is not correct. Watch this video watch?v=gwbAZypHqP0 @1:24 she pronounces the word NOW (same sound as HOW she also used int he beginning of the video), listen to it and don't come back telling me it is the same sound as in ROUW, or I have to conclude you're not Dutch! Also at 0:44 at the bottom the sound 'ER' (or 'err') is written as I said earlier sounds like the short U in Dutch.
